Gophers ‘absolutely’ will seek a quarterback in NCAA transfer portal

If Drake leaves, say this spring...I believe he would land at a lateral school at the worst... Top 50 team. I think we could argue if AK8 didn't land at Rutgers he was likely going to a team below 50.
Drake and Kollock are prospects higher than we usually recruit.
What makes you think Drake would land at a top 50 team at worst? He didn’t have many offers out of high school and hasn’t played in college. Zero reason to think his stock has risen to where he’d be a hot commodity now. Drake and Kollock are not any higher of qb prospects than what Fleck has recruited yearly here.

I have been wondering this myself. I hope Lindsay is really good but I feel like a lot of posters on this board seem to have seen him play a bunch but I don’t know where. Otherwise it just seems like something that gets repeated so much it becomes true?

Kollock is a 4-star. Have we been consistently getting 4-star qb recruits???

And here's Lindsey's high school stats: threw for 3,941 yards in his senior season while completing 69 percent of his passes. 54TD and 3 INT. 13-0 state champ.

Kaliakmanis was 349 in the 247 composite rankings, Kollock is 439, Lindsey was 873.

And was the Arkansas high school offensive player of the year at the 7A level (highest level). And Arkansas plays pretty good high school football.....

A couple of FCS guys to keep an eye on:

1. SDSU QB Mark Gronowski. After exploring the draft (he never entered the portal but there was reliable info that he was going to grad transfer to Northwestern) following the 2023 season, Gronowski elected to return to SDSU. He has said this year is his final season at SDSU. He has one season of eligibility remaining. His intention is/was to declare for the draft but he's had a bit of a rocky season without three receivers who each spent time in NFL camps this fall. He doesn't look like an NFL caliber QB without those guys but Easton Stick from NDSU has stuck around in the NFL and he never looked the part, either, so what do I know? He grew up an hour from Evanston and his former OC at SDSU is at NW now. He grew of Badger fan. Are either of those spots very desirable? I'm not sure the biggest bag gets Mark on campus. Fit would be more important.

2. Zach Calzada, University of the Incarnate Word. Originally at Texas A & M where he played in 10 games. Transfered to Auburn and never saw the field after injuring his shoulder. He's got a cannon for an arm and is showing it in his second year at UIW. UIW I believe received the 6 seed in the FCS playoffs and he isn't in the portal but you have to wonder if a guy like this won't take another crack at FBS after two unfulfilling stints. He has for sure one year left of eligibility and perhaps two, if he received a medical redshirt for the season lost to injury. He's a real gamer with a big arm, is mobile and isn't afraid of contact. I'd assume he'd get a pretty good bag if he does enter the portal. He might qualify for grad transfer status and may not need to enter the portal.

The staff recruited Calzada out of high school:

So, no we haven't been consistently getting 4-star qbs. Athan is the only one (only other one I can think of is maybe Gray but that was a while ago)? And in retrospect, AK's 4-star ranking is really a head-scratcher. He hardly played his junior year due to injury and his senior year he had a 58% completion percentage. The scouts must have really based it all completely off potential. Lindsey's resume is so much more impressive. Former Arkansas coach, Houston Nutt, also raved about him - https://www.si.com/college/arkansas...-nutt-minnesota-gophers-fayetterville-lindsey

Not saying Lindsey should be handed the job next year. I'll trust the coaches on that decision. But Kollock and Lindsey look like really good prospects.

He’s a fringe four star. Same realm as Jacob Clark same realm as Jacob Knuth. We were close to landing a handful of other qbs in the same realm. Yes Lindsey has high school stats, but he wasn’t rated higher than a usual Fleck QB target, and his offer list wasn’t longer than a usual target either.

So what are you saying? They'll be bad because they were fringe 4-stars? QB is probably the hardest position to predict success (even in the NFL draft). I'm just saying that Kollock and Lindsey are two really good prospects and I like their resumes. We'll see how they turn out. Hopefully they are a lot better than Knuth, Clark, and AK.

he's saying he views star rating and offers as their resume more than their stats

No I’m just saying they don’t stand out to me at this point as far as a typical Fleck QB recruit. I don’t think they have much pull in the transfer portal without having played any college ball. I am not ready to just roll with them and hope one can hit the ground running. Not saying they don’t have potential, but I have no idea how good they are at this point.

If you have watched Drake throw in practice you can see he has all the talent in the world - on the pre-game KFAN radio before the Penn State game Gaard interviewed Brosmer and Max raved about Drake's ability. Max said (not an exact quote - I'm paraphrasing here )" I have seen a lot of QBs both in camps and and in games and Drake is by far the best I have ever seen! What he can do with the ball is amazing."

Now, I have to aknowledge that AK was very, very talented as well. While I think Drake has the most talent I have seen in my 40 years as a season ticket holder the real difference will be between the ears! AK does not play well when stressed and I don't think Drake has that problem. Grandpa was an All American (I think but not going to look it up), Grandpa played for the Vikes for 7 years, Dad played for Arkansas, and sister pays volleyball for Arkansas. So... with that kind of athletic background I think Drake will do the mental work, he has been in Max's pocket for the last year, and have the nerve to stay calm in the pocket.

So... My bet is on Drake for the reasons above - can't wait to see him next year.

Burns is getting all worked up with his supporters are saying they will add a good QB and he keeps saying a low level type will be added.
