GopherLady's STrib blog: The Truth About Tubby Smith

Let's see, if 80% of the people are in the 15% group, how many of the remaining 20% are in the 5% group and of that remaining 20%, how many are in the 80% group? Actually, GopherLady, another very good read. Thank you. Doc.

5%? That's the anti-Tubby group. Why would we think that? Confused

I'm guessing most think I'm a 5% supporter but actually, I'm in the 15% group.

Gophers need 25+ W regularly. Need to contend (Top 3 or 4 teams) for B10 and B10T titles. Need to W some NCAA games. And need to put players into the NBA and/or get them drafted.

Good job once again! Definitely enjoy your passion and honesty! I'm solidly in the 15% group. I know you didn't conduct a scientific survey and are winging the poll...and you may be dead on...but I'd lean that the 15% group is a higher percentage? (And I may be wrong )

Well, I did do a very scientific survey...thought about my friends on here, in the tailgate lots, and that I talk to about Gopher Hoops...so my math could be off ;). Someone else already emailed me about that, and maybe I was being a little generous with the 80%, but honestly, I feel like 80% of people think Tubby is god, and would never even want to hear or believe a bad thing about him. Maybe that's also skewed because I think of the love for him, vs. Brew. I think you are correct though, the 15% probably could have been 25% or so.

OH! LOL Comparing the love for Brewster is going to mess with anybody's head. Ya know tho....as I left the basketball game I went walking by the football stadium and stopped and looked at the wall of contributors. Brewster's name is in a prominent spot there. I thought that was revealing. He was willing to contribute his own money to the program. I think his heart was in the right spot. He was genuine. (You'd know better if that is accurate) Just in over his head.

GopherLady, you are not a professional writer. I am in that 80% group who thinks Tubby is god. I also think that as a fan, you did well but as a basketball analyst, you did a very poor job. I expected you to know more about basketball than this. The reason that we haven't won the NC yet is because we haven't won big in Big10 yet. Once we do, we will have better players coming in and things will get better. You have to realize that college basketball is changed. Players as a whole are not as talented as they used to be. There are only a few programs in the country that land those players. How they do it, I am not sure but I think it has something to do with the reputation of the program and perhaps some behind-the-closed-doors activities.

Stop attacking Tubby and be more supportive. It is the beggining of the season and we need to be more positive. You should ask him for his substitution pattern in private before you post it in your blog. Maybe he can educate you then.

Well, let's see, if you don't like Nadine's blog don't read it. Keep up the good work Gopher Lady. The "Real Truth" only wants to read what he/she deems to be the "real truth".

Did you even read my blog? I wrote:
I am not a professional writer, nor do I have editors.
That is why it is called a BLOG. It's my opionion and thoughts. If I ever had access to asking about his substitution patterns, that would be in an interview. I may not know as much as you, but I'd say the majority of people would agree with me on this one...if you ever watch and analyze each game.

Who on earth said we should have won a NC by now, I said the 2nd round of the tourney.

I'm attacking Tubby, really? If this is attacking him, I can't wait to see how upset you are when we lose our 1st game and the big boys write about it. I pointed out a few areas of improvement...and guess what, no one is perfect, not even Tubby!

I don't think the 80% thinks Tubby is perfect, but we respect his coaching enough to expect things to get better. I don't see how anyone can complain about his coaching last year. He did a great job to get that group of guys in the tournament after all of the issues they had.
Plus, I never worry that he is going to embarrass us, he is a genuine class act. He will win and do it right.
His recruiting process mystifies me, but he doesn't seem to worry about it, so it will remain a mystery to me.

Lol. She's a Packers fan. What do you expect? :)

Seriously! No, wait, seriously-

Now that Gopherlady has put her opinion on her blog I think-

He doesn’t get a free pass from me, but he has my support 100%.

She'll have my support 100% for doing it but she won't get a free pass if we should find something we disagree with in her writing.

I've seen every local writer seriously ripped on the Gopherhole. GL probably won't be much different.

Just sayin'

Don't listen to him GL, keep doing what you're doing!

Oh please, it's not like I'm waiting to get ripped...I've been getting ripped for years! Nothing new to me. I tell you, the grammar police on the blog is getting on my last nerve. I barely find time to crank these out, and will be a lot less motivated to do so if they only look at spelling and grammar vs. the message!

Excellent blog post! To be fair to Tubby, our first two classes were top 25 classes, it's just that the 2nd one kinda fell apart on him. The third one was a little iffy, but I like Hollins a LOT, and big Mo was a top 150 type player. This year's class has started off pretty well, getting a couple top 150 kids, don't know if we're going after more or not though. I would like to see us win a couple more battles for the "studs", but really it's kind of the thing with Tubby and his knock, not getting those elite level guys like Cory Joseph last year.

I thought last year was the year we were going to make a run in the tourney, but really, so much stuff happened, it was a miracle we even got there. Last season was really a setback for the program, just losing our prized recruit, all the extra curricular stuff that just brought that team down. A major disappointment. This year though, barring any more ridiculous drama, I EXPECT a win or two in the tourney, and at least a bye in the BT Tourney. Then next year, I wanna see this team truly challenge for a Big Ten championship, I mean be right in it until the very end. Good or bad breaks can influence whether you actually win it or not, but if you are right in that mix, winning 13, 14 BT games, that's all I can really ask.

Like here?

To sum it all up, I did think we’d be a little further along right now, as I’m sure Coach Smith ex.

I'm not one to talk though. I started a thread yesterday saying Myron's live chat was at 1200. Well, unfortunately, I didn't realize it was for today.

Whaddya do? :)

Tubby signed 1 "stud" at Georgia (Jumaine Jones), numerous "studs" at UK (Tayshaun Prince all the way to Rajon Rondo), and 1 "stud" so far at Minnesota (Royce White). The term "stud" refers to Top 25 rated HS recruits.

He missed on Cory Joseph last year. Minnesota has rarely signed out-of-state "studs" in recent years, no matter which coach was doing the recruiting.

I don't blame his coaching (per se) but the Gophers L at least 5 games that EASILY could have been W. Even Tubby has stated his disappointment with last year's results.

Just curious, what was Trevor's rating out of high school.

This is true, I'm just noting that is one of the supposed knocks on him and his recruiting, that he doesn't get those types of guys. It's not like you have to in order to win, it just makes it easier to win, I think. It's one of those things where if we're real close to getting one, we need to get them, cause the opportunities won't be plentiful like at other schools. Sucks that Royce was such a head case, cause talent like that would have been very nice in a Gopher uni.

I think when you look at Tubby's early tenure at Minnesota, you have to look at his peers within the conference brought in around the same time or with longer tenures. Lickliter, Belein, Dechellis, and Crean haven't had the level of success Tubby has had so early in his tenure. While it is average success, it shows fielding a winner in the Big 10 is no easy task. I think last year was a dissapointment to most, but only because of the expectations that were set in the 2008-2009 season and the 2009 recruiting class hype. This year is hopefully free of drama so we can see what this team is made of. Expectations have definetely rose.

Beilein vs. Belein
DeChellis vs. Dechellis
disappointment vs. dissapointment
definitely vs. definetely
…maybe even risen vs. rose.

Just kidding. Crean has gotten some great looking 'commits', but mostly in the 2012 and 2014 classes... if he gets Cody Z., that may be enough to satisfy the program's faithful for a little while longer...

Coming into Minnesota, though... Tubby certainly was a bigger 'brand name' than any of the other guys you mentioned... therefore, an expectation of better performance than some of the others might be reasonable... even though we're talking about the same conference.

Oh gosh - now that is something that clearly was a typo - thanks! Stuff like that is huge, but I had some guy talk to me about untriggered reflexives. I'm like, I just wasted 30 seconds of my life I can't get back, and you need to get a hobby, loser. Obvious things like that were clearly a mistake!

Thanks for the spelling lesson. I echo Gopher Lady's sentiments on that topic. I will use more "..."'s in the future to make my point. :)

He was absolutely a bigger brand name hire and he has absolutely performed better. My only point was that getting the program to where it is right now from where it was when Monson left, and doing it so quickly is not an easy task. The bar has been raised though.

Crean has every advantage in the world to win at Indiana, Iowa was above average during the Alford years, Michigan and Penn State are "brand name" schools with plenty of talent in the their backyards.

Put me on the optimistic end of the 15%. Thrilled with where we are, looking for big things to come.

The bar has been raised though. Frankly, it doesnt seem like the bar has been raised much at all. Four years in, some folks are completely content with getting to the NCAA say nothing about going deep into the tournament.

When you hire a name coach, with the resume of Tubby, the expectations are high and can only go higher, faster. Winning some will sooth, to an extent, for so long.

Then it gets tougher to please. Then is now for those expecting excellent results from the coach and the team.

I would say those people are in the minority. From all the casual fans to the diehards I talk with, most were disappointed with the way last year went.

Winning early is a credit to the coach, regardless of the hype coming in. I'm not trying to deflect criticism, I was among those pulling my hair out during some of the losses last year. I'm just happy with the hire and the optimistic about the higher expectations for the coming years.

If I had the "nuts" to complain about GopherLady's spelling and grammer, then she would have the "whatevers" to complain about my gray beard and all the beer I drink. GL is all class. Good job, GL, keep up the good work and don't let the bas****s wear ya down. A fan of you and The Gophers, Doc.

I had some guy talk to me about untriggered reflexives.

I had to look that up.

Usually my deal is reading something I wrote and still skipping over a major typo. I bet you read your blog entry several times and didn't notice the typo. For whatever reason your mind places the correct word in the sentence over and over again and you never notice it was either missing or misspelled.

There was a great episode of Barney Miller where a grammar cop was arrested for disorderly conduct. An advertiser was making up words like ' scrumdillyiscious ' and the guy went ballastic. It was fabulous.
