GopherLady's Strib Blog: Do you trust Joel Maturi to hire the next Football coach?

Was it a vendetta though?

How's her credibility?

(If you're doing this on purpose, bravo. If not, I thought you said you were smart?)

How dare you critique the spelling on this board! What gives you the right to care about literacy? After all, this is a board for college athletics. We ought to sound as ignorant and uneducated as we can.

It's just spelling, though. It doesn't mean anything. It's not as if the language has been increasingly standardized over the last 900 years or something.

Thanks for quoting him so I could see my errors. I acknowledge my typos and have corrected. Firefox has spoiled me when I post with IE I'm afraid. A message board is nothing if posts aren't properly edited.

Please give me some examples of the great minor coaches he's hired here? I don't dispute that the wrestling, baseball and volleyball coaches are great, but none of them were hired by Joel Maturi.

Really? Whats the number one knock on Maturi. He only cares about the minor sports.

The mens track coach has won back to back indoor and out door titles in his first two seasons. Thats four for four.

The womens track coach has won four Big Ten titles since 2006. Womens track had never won a Big Ten title before.

Soccer was the worst program in the BT. A title and two sweet sixteens in the last four years

The only womens tennis title in history came from a coach hired by Maturi.

The womens swimming coaches won the BT in 2008. First since 2000.

Womens hockey coach has won two titles, had two Frozen Fours in his first three years.

Yes Tubby's still here. Is that also supposed to be some miraculous Maturi feat? He came very close to leaving for Virginia a year and a half ago. Matur's been supposedly working on a contract extension since March, but it's not done. Why not? We're hardly out of the woods that Tubby could leave.

"Came very close"....and?

he's been promising Anderson a baseball stadium for 10 years with no shovel in the ground, Tubby a Practice Facility for 4 years with no shovel in the ground,

So divert effort from getting a stadium bill passed at the state legislature and one of the biggest fundraising endeavors in the history of Gopher sports?

It was an honest question. The successful non-revenue coaches I can name all came before Maturi, but it's good to see he has hired a few. It doesn't make up for his other short-comings IMO, but maybe it does in yours.

'Came very close' and turned it down, but not likely because of anything Maturi did, more because of what UVa did not do. OP seemed to want to give Maturi credit for pulling the great feat of keeping Tubby from leaving for all of 3+ years. I don't see it as a great feat and frankly we're probably lucky he hasn't chased him away yet, UVa being the best example.

I don't dispute that TCF had to take priority, but why is it impossible to do all 3 things at the same time? Jim Pohlad likely wasn't contributing to TCF, he did contribute to the baseball stadium. I can't buy the notion that we can only fund-raise for one specific thing at a time. I frankly don't care all that much if the get a baseball stadium or not, so long as the Dome is standing, but the idea that it should take 10 years to even get it off the drawing board is absurd, regardless of what else is going on.

I debated putting in my own experience with him, as I knew that I would be criticized for it. I'm past the point of really caring though - I had a very thin skin when I 1st began this blog, and through non-stop ripping apart, I have developed a thicker skin, which is a good thing. I've always cared what people thought, and now I only care what few that I respect think.

I took the advice of a few that read it, and did add it it, to show an example of his lack of vision. That was one of many. If you think it's a personal vendetta, you are sadly mistaken - it's a lack of competency and desire to win that I can't stand. If you think he's a good A.D. and he's capable of taking Minnesota to the next level, then more power to you. I'm looking for any evidence of that still...many years later.

You should be commended not criticized for doing that. Anyone who would criticize you for putting it in there should be ignored, though assuming that readers will read it and think "an example of his lack of vision" might not be the case. Putting it out there neutralized the " yeah but, she absolutely HATES Maturi" responses before they happened. Full disclosure is to be applauded and is how most people will probably see it.

There has been probably been more pressure from football supporters to ditch baseball to funnel money and protect football from Title Nine cuts as there has been from baseball supporters to build a new stadium.

Few? You named 3. I named 7.

And yes, it absolutely, 100 percent, without doubt, no question makes up for alllllllllll of his shortcomings in my eyes.

I don't doubt that Maturi has to fight many political battles behind the scenes. If it's true that builing a baseball stadium isn't realistic, then say so. I don't expect Maturi to be Super Man, but at least acknowledge reality. If we're never getting a practice facility, don't tell Tubby we are and then be sitting there 4 years later with nothing. And don't tell us in March you're working on a contract extension for him and then not have one done by December. It makes the whole operation look inept to me. If I'm simply getting a skewed view, fine. But I can't be the only one.
