Getting mad at the fanbase is BS. The U is fine with empty seats. If they weren't they wouldn't be charging $125 for tickets. Having journalists with free access and free parking wagging their fingers at potential fans is a sad look. I used to expect more from GoperLady, but not so much anymore.

I know a lot of casual Gopher fans are excited and are tuning in on TV when they didn't always, but they aren't going to put up $500 to take the family.

I thought the fairgrounds had a free shuttle to and from the stadium?

They do and also have handicap parking and handicap van shuttle service right to gate C where there is an elevator at the entrance. I have been parking at this lot since the first year and this year at each game there seems to be more and more people parking there. Easy in and out. Plenty of buses before and after games.

Simply put, modern traditions just isn't in U of MN for football.

For those of us that are diehard fans, we'd go when and if we can where our lives allows us.

I'm a CBS grad from 2000, don't live in the Twin Cities, but I take Maroon and Gold Gopher football with me whereever I went (FL, LA, and now PA), and tried to get back to the Twin Cities once a year for one game. My 10 year old son wasn't born in MN, but I make him watch college football with me (teach him the rivalries and traditions) especially Gophers football in the last 10 years. Through all the years of crap records, he still loves Gophers and we'll be going back to TCF Bank for the Penn State game.

Having been in the Greek System at the U for 5 years, been a student and graduate from the U, football simply just isn't that important for students. 45-50K student bodies at the U, maybe only 10-15% cares for football, shoot half of them are probably students from other countries where they don't even know american football.

As a parent, once you have a job, a family, other hobbies, going to a Gophers football game, sitting outside in the cold where you can sit in the comfort of your own home with a 90" flat screen TV, it'll be a tough sale!

I can go on and on with why people don't go to Gopher's game, but we should be thankful the type of team PJ is putting together with this amazing year thus far and just make sure that WE (those of us are active on the forums) go and support our team when we can. Hopefully one by one, Minnesotans will show up.

Been living in Pittsburgh area and WVU is really close. I learned that WVU gives ALL of their undergrad students FREE season football tickets. As long as you're an enrolled undergraduate student, you get the entire football season tickets free within your tuition. Perhaps the U can adapt something like that. Just add all of the sporting events ticket fees into a "Student Services/Recreational Fees" and student can go to ANY sporting event of their choices?

I definitely agree with Nadine, our awesome football deserves better attendance, but that will be just as hard to improve or figure out as trying to get Mr. President DT out of the Oval Office. Focus on ourselves and hope others will follow.

Thank God we have blowhards that feel the rest of us give one crap about their politcal opinions. Otherwise all we would need the internet for is talking about football and maybe porn.

Otherwise I think the U needs to do a better job promoting the program to students...this $7 student deal they had this week was a great start and it looked like they had decent results prior to when this picture was taken...otherwise the football program isn’t all that visible on campus. How about we put the weekly radio show somewhere on campus instead of Roseville? How about some small events or giveaways in and around Coffman during the week? I believe the team wear wristbands and give them to patients at the Children’s hospital...how about we make that a universal thing by giving them away to every freshman at orientation connecting the student body, the football program and the Children’s Hospital? I don’t know...marketing is a tricky game but I do think they are just scratching the surface. They seem committing to improving fan engagement on gamedays and otherwise so more is probably coming. Good on them for that.

Yep. Not sure why this is so hard to understand. Reward loyal season ticket holders while being able to attract new fans should be the way to go. They went with the complete opposite strategy. I fully expect them to implement the "donation" increase due to the success of this season soon.

You shouldn't have to run promotions to fill a stadium for the last two home games. My guess is that most of the contributors to GH are not the problem. If 10% of those that have attended the U of M in the last 30 years would attend these last two games, I am certain we would have a sellout.

Correct. But that isn’t what happens. What you’re asking for isn’t realistic or commonplace. They need to add fans. This is a chance to do it. Price tickets accordingly.

Just because $70/person is fair to some, or affordable to some, doesn’t mean it is to a lot of people.

Haven't posted on here for years. Just wanted tlto say this Twitter post took a little steam out of my enthusiasm Saturday.

I thought the atmosphere was very good, especially against a team fans were expecting an easy victory against. On the way home I get text messages from a few buddies taking shots at attendance. Dumb. This team and the loyal fans deserve more than low effort digs. Couldn't be more proud of this team on and off the field.

People forget that the students don’t have assigned seats. People forget that once the per game student ticket sale hits the prescribed number, they stop selling them (not to say it happened here).

People forget these are basically kids. People forget that about 90% of these kids minds revolve around sex. People forget that when these kids get together to have fun, they like to be close to each other. People forget that these kids like to go to football games to have fun, and be close together.

People forget that in the student section, the students are close together, and like to be in the lower deck.

I’ll bet right here that there are a minimum of 20% more students in that section than legally are supposed to fit there. Likely more. Take that 20-30% more and spread it in the upper deck. It would look a lot more full.

Yep, pretty simple. I was in the middle section and we probably had about 2.5 people for everyone spot around me. I felt we have gotten more and more active as the season has gone on, and we’ll be ready to explode in 2 weeks.

Agreed. Loved my student tickets circa late 90s -2000. All in the lower level. It was one big party at times. I'm sure it still is pretty wild, if not better now, in the lower bowl at TCF.

Found this old Gopher seating chart at the Metrodome. The lower deck purple shade was for sure the student section. Not sure if the upper deck purple shade was for students or not - I didn't remember student seats at the top but maybe there were.
