Coach Kill did not appear on the Sports Huddle until the final few minutes of the half-hour segment. Kill was busy visiting with recruits and their families at TCF Bank Stadium. Initially it was reported the delay would be only a few minutes; however, Tubby Smith was available and was interviewed for the main portion of the slotted time period and coach Kill was on for approximately six minutes (not including commercial time).

1) Sid opened by asking what recruiting rules they're presently operating under: Kill said this is the busy time and will be for the next three weeks. He was in California Friday making an in-home visit (coaches can make one in-home visit). They're also busy with campus visits with recruits and parents on weekends. Recruits attended the Gopher hockey games this weekend and future visits will include Gopher basketball games. They're also conducting intensive recruiting efforts toward the 2014 recruiting period . . . junior recruits and their parents are also visiting the campus at this time.

He concluded the question by saying this year has been the most aggressive they've been in recruiting since they arrived at Minnesota.

2) Sid asked how they could be known recruiting-wise in California: Kill responded saying they have players on the current team, i.e., Brock Vereen, Cedric Thompson. He stressed the importance of building and maintaining relationships. He then spent some time talking about the merits of Minnesota and the university. He said when he meets with recruits he's surprised how many people know of family members, acquaintances that reside in the Twin Cities because of the Fortune 500 companies and the vibrant business community located in Minnesota and the Twin Cities.

3) Sid asked if coach Kill was surprised about Minnesota's assets (business community): Kill admitted he's still learning about the state and the Twin Cities and its many assets (business and quality of life). He also said it takes a couple years to learn about the school and the surrounding features that make a vibrant community/area. He concluded by saying Minnesotans and the 'U' need to trumpet the many assets that they're blessed with. (The point is driven home when he visits other states and compares them with what Minnesota has to offer.)

4) Sid, again, asked about recruits coming in for the spring semester: Kill said there's a lot that has yet to take place: academic/administrative paper work and continuous recruiting of the verbaled players. He said the late coaching changes (Tennessee, Arkansas, Wisconsin, etc.) has changed the recruiting landscape - recruiting openings and reopenings.

5) Sid then acknowledged Kill couldn't name names, but Minnesota has a recruit that Alabama wants (Sid's words): Kill responded by laughing and saying Sid is always trying to get him in trouble with the NCAA by asking recruiting questions that he can't comment on. He then talked about the great job Nick Saban has been doing and has going at Alabama, "I'd like to look like Alabama some day." (He talked about the talent and, of course, Saban's big paycheck.)

6) Dave Mona asked GopherHoler Killjoy's question about spring practice: Kill said spring practice will take place much like it did last year. He anticipates it'll start at the end of March. Weather will be a factor as to the start and when the drills are conducted. (No specific dates given. It also sounded as though the drills will be run as they were last year with many of the practices opened to the public (that's my take.))

7) Mona's second question had been submitted by gophergrad: Last year, Minnesota coaches visited TCU, Mississippi State and West Virginia to observe their offensive and defensive practices. Gophergrad wanted to know if they planned off-campus visits and/or if they hoped to have visiting coaches on the Minnesota campus this year. Kill said they plan to have some high profile coaches (no names given) visit this year (those in town for coaches clinics) to conduct some private instruction/clinics. (It didn't sound as though the Minnesota coaches will be visiting other schools this year.)

Coach Kill only had a couple minutes in which to answer and elaborate on the submitted questions by Killjoy and gophergrad. He did a good job, however, answering the GopherHole queries. It's also good to see that Dave Mona considered the submitted questions of GopherHolers. I personally believe if he had had more time, Dave probably would have used additional GopherHole questions.

Go Gophers!!

Again - thanks for the good read. The recruit Bama wants has to be Nate Andrews.

Thanks DL. I don't want to start another string so I am going to put this question here hoping that somebody may know the answer. The question is, is the Goal Line club going to sponsor a signing day party at TCF Stadium again this year? I along with three friends really enjoyed it and would like to go again.

Thanks for posting. Caught some of the show today myself. Heard Kill talk about the Minnesota business community, how it's known all over and how it could help recruiting. Good points but you want to know, honestly, what my first thought was? As a long time Gopher Holer my first thought was:

" Boy is that going to tick people on the Board!"

Everything else does, why should that comment be any different?

I know that there are Gopher fans that are not fans of Kill, but this guy REALLY seems to be on the right track and is landing recruits that will help the Gophers reach the top of the Big 10. He is a class act and hope that he can build the program, just as he has done at other schools he has been at. Call me a homer, but I smell roses in 2015!

The current class is ranked 69th. Only Purdue is ranked lower. Top 60's classes don't equate to Rose Bowls. If by the 5th year we don't see the classes improve I'm afraid we're running parallel to the Mason years.

I'm not sure if top 60's equate to Rose Bowls, but I know top 50's do. According to Rivals Wisconsin's ratings were 34, 41, 43, 87, 40 & 56 from 2007 - 2012 for an average rating of 50.16 ...

Side note, Minnesota went 57, 17, 39, 51, 52 & 72 in that same period for an average rating of 48.0

LOL - So you are not capable of getting beyond the superficial Rivals assessments and begin to understanding that how Kill's staff evaluates players is quite different than Rivals? Could you please first try to discriminate between the two approaches first and then begin to use your own mind to evaluate Jerry Kill's recruiting at Minnesota.

Selective reading on your part. I "said" by the 5th year. I realize the the staff goes by evaluation and what fits the system versus stars, still at some point 2-3 star recruits are not going to win the B1G or get you to the Rose Bowl. If you think so, you're completely delusional. And don't bring up Boise State. They play against 2-3 star recruits in their conference. In regards to Wisconsin, while
their classes haven't ranked high, they've by in large kept the best kids in the state from leaving.

Wow, Carmac that was magnificent. Well played.

If our talent level was equal to the Mason years, I'd be pretty excited. I don't think Mason's problem was bringing in talent, I think his problem was executing and building an identity on defense. If we had the same level of talent as the Mason years and we had some of those bizarre games bounce a different way (from coaching) we'd have had a couple chances to play Rose Bowl/Jan 1 Bowls.

If we run parallel to that level of talent in the program, I'm ok with that for now. We don't need better talent here by year 5 than talent that is capable of playing in a Jan 1 bowl game.

Niiiice. No response, Rupe?

Some people seem to forget Mason came awfully close to playing in a Jan 1st bowl game with horrible talent. ;)

Honestly, does anyone realize what Rivals is all about? I worked with them on a project and became aware after 2 weeks of being around them that they had 2 things on their agenda. The first was to get as many paid profiles as possible to create traffic, the second was to make more money from advertisers because of that traffic. If you knew how few people they have studying recruits and ranking kids they have never seen, you wouldn't waste your time talking about them.
If Rivals knew everything and was accurate in their assessments, college coaches wouldn't waste time traveling around, watching endless hours of video and attending games.

Thanks for the update...I do wish, though, they would get someone other than Sid on the show. He has really lost it. I have read his columns and listened to him for 50+ years, but it is LONG past time (20 years??) for him to retire. I can barely stand to watch the Sunday night Sports Show, too. If he truly is still the "hardest working sports writer in the Twin Cities", then shame on the rest of them.

Question then....What would be more accurate than Rivals? Scout or ESPN? Heck, Scout still has Nate Andrews listed as a "Soft Verbal".

During that period Wisconsin had 4 classes ranked in the 40's or better. Minnesota had two. If you consider the Scout rating service it came out even better. 5 to 1. The point missing here
is the number of top kids in-state Wisconsin kept at home. They also pulled a few of our top kids out of Minnesota. In summary if Coach Kills 4th and 5th recruiting classes are ranked in the high 60's we will have a .500 team moving forward.

I've looked at recruiting rankings for a long time it's a bell curve. If your not in the top 25 or the bottom 25 the differences can often be explained by class size not quality. We will have a relatively small class which will push us 15 to 20 places down on class ranking even though on average we have pretty good kids. Every one of our commits is ranked a 3 star by Rivals or ESPN.

How do you consider 21 kids a small class? Coach Kill said they would ink 17-18 kids and go 3 over
due to transfers, early graduation, etc.

The Spring practies where they let the fans onto the field are special for a BT team. You will not be disappointed. Even my daughters enjoyed the visit and they got gopher stickers.

Top 60's classes don't equate to Rose Bowls.

TCU says "hai".

2006 - #60
2007 - #80
2008 - #96
2009 - #46
2010 - #46

Average ranking: #65.6
Mean/Median ranking: #60

After 2010 season? Rose Bowl victory. This with most of their upperclassmen coming from classes ranked in the 80s or 90s. Brilliant take. Just out of curiosity - have you ever had a good post on this site? I can't recall any.

Same as the Boise State situation. Look at the conference they were in. Tell you what Dips, put some money where your mouth is. If Coach Kill continues to have top 60 classes into his 5th year bolster your confidence and tell me they will be in the Rose Bowl. Talk is cheap son. Talk to the hand, the face don't hear you. Have a nice day in what seems to be a shallow, condescending life for you.
