Billy Glasscock, Director of Recruiting Operations filled in for Tracy Claeys on today’s Sports Huddle. Claeys is on the road recruiting.
1) Sid’s first question was about recruiting services and whether or not Minnesota uses said services:
“Yeah, we do. We have 8-10 different services that evaluate high school prospects,” Glasscock said. He added that they start each year with a list of approximately 15,000 potential recruits.
2) Sid wanted to know how reliable the services are in evaluations:
“We don’t take the ratings (of services) in account . . . we rate them,” Glasscock replied.
He said they flip through the services to see who is having a good year, but they rely on their evaluations when whittling the list down.
3) Sid asked if they use Tom Lemming’s service:
Glasscock sad they use Tom Lemming service as a source. However, he hastened to add that Lemming’s service is a national perspective.
It sounded as though the coaching staff uses other services that focus on high school athletes in the upper Midwest.
4) Dave Mona raised the topic of recruiting Canadian players (Minnesota has a couple players from Canada):
Glasscock said they look at a lot of international recruits. So as to get a better sense of their abilities they invite them to their football camps or satellite camps.
5) Sid asked if they recruit walk-ons:
“Yeah, we have a couple (who have committed) . . . (we) try to get a sense of the best players in our state . . . we evaluate them (the same as scholarship players),” Glasscock answered.
He closed the question by saying they plan to sign a couple of PWO quarterbacks. To get to the final two – PWO quarterbacks - they evaluate 40-50 quarterbacks.
6) Sid asked how many commitments they have at this time:
Billy Glasscock said he wasn’t positive of the number off the top of his head. He thought they have 13 commitments. Glasscock said they expect to have a full class – “close to 25.” He also said the “number is always changing” because of kids graduating early or transferring after the season.
7) Dave Mona asked about the influence or impact that social media affects recruiting. Dave said announcements of commitments are almost instantaneous:
“It’s crazy . . . lightening fast,” Glasscock answered.
As an example of the speed in announcements on the internet, Glasscock said a player may commit to Tracy Claeys and before the player reaches his office to tell him of his commitment it is already on twitter.
As far as social media, Glasscock said he sees positives and negatives. It has changed recruiting, according to the Director of Recruiting Operations.
8) Sid raised the topic of recruits reneging on their verbal’s:
“We haven’t had too many this year – more in the past . . . part of recruiting,” Glasscock said.
He also said that frequently a commit will take a visit to another school before he has visited the school that he committed to. The player may find the visit a positive experience, and, as a result, decides to take other visits.
If player(s) decommit, Glasscock said, “We always have other guys lined up (Plan B).”
9) Sid asked about signing juco players in December:
“We have had success recruiting juco players,” Glasscock said. He then listed several players that enjoyed success at Minnesota in recent years. A couple players mentioned were Brien Body-Calhoun and linebacker Wilson.
Other juco players cited include Garrison Wright and Vincent Calhoun.
10) Dave Mona’s and the show’s final question was related to unheralded players who come to their attention via a parent, and players who catch their eye on film when they’re looking at another player. As an example, a lineman is sometimes discovered when they’re looking at a running back:
“We will get film from dads and friends,” Glasscock said. And he acknowledged when they look at film they’ve discovered players while looking at another player. Garrison Wright is such a player, “Garrison Wright in fall stood out (final year in junior college) . . . He’s a guy we found watching film . . . big guy pulling.”
Another player cited was Brien Body-Calhoun.
