Gophers earn three WCHA Player of the Week awards

Three Gophers have been recognized with Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Player of the Week awards following Minnesota's road sweep at Ohio State last weekend. Rachael Bona, Milica McMillen and Dani Cameranesi picked up weekly accolades for their play against the Buckeyes.

WCHA Co-Offensive Player of the Week: Rachael Bona

Junior forward Rachael Bona (Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the Gophers with six points (3g-3a) against Ohio State. Bona had four points (3g-1a), including her first career hat trick, in the Gophers’ 9-2 win before recording two assists in Sunday’s 5-1 victory. Bona was on the ice for seven of Minnesota’s 14 goals on the weekend, including one power-play and one short-handed tally.

Bona’s six points marked her best series since the season-opener at Colgate when she had seven points (4g-3a). She has 13 points (4g-9a) and averages 2.6 points per game during her current five-game point streak. Bona is tied for the WCHA lead and second in the nation in total points (33) and points per game (1.65).

This week's award marks the second WCHA Offensive Player of the Week award for Bona this season. She also was honored following the Gophers' season-opening series sweep at Colgate. Bona is the Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Wisconsin's Madison Packer.

WCHA Defensive Player of the Week: Milica McMillen

Sophomore Milica McMillen (St. Paul, Minn.) led Gopher defensemen with a career-best five points (2g-3a) at Ohio State. McMillen was on the ice for eight of Minnesota’s 14 goals (including two power-play goals) on the weekend and finished the series +6. Defensively, McMillen helped the Gophers hold OSU to 39 total shots in the series.

McMillen led all players with four points in Sunday’s 5-1 win. She scored two goals and assisted two others for a career-best four-point game while helping the Gophers limit Ohio State to 13 shots on goal. Saturday, McMillen finished +3 and assisted Dani Cameranesi’s power-play in the third period.

In just her sophomore season, McMillen is tied for seventh all-time among Gopher defensemen with 20 career goals. McMillen leads WCHA defensemen and ranks fourth in the nation among blue-liners with 1.06 points per game. Her 19 points (7g-12a) are tops in the league and tied for second in the NCAA. McMillen has 10 points (3g-7a) during her current six-game point streak.

WCHA Rookie of the Week: Dani Cameranesi

Rookie forward Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) recorded her second-straight four-point series (2g-2a) in Minnesota’s road sweep at Ohio State. Cameranesi's four points included two goals on five shots.

In Saturday’s 9-2 win, Cameranesi recorded three points, scoring the first short-handed goal of her Gopher career before adding her NCAA-best fifth power-play goal of the season. Cameranesi also assisted the Gophers’ first goal of the game. She added an assist on the power-play in Sunday's 5-1 win as well.

Cameranesi is tied for the lead among WCHA rookies with 17 points (10g-7a). She also ranks third among WCHA rookies (seventh in the nation) with 0.85 points per game. Her four-point series and her three-point game both tied career-bests.

Minnesota has a four-week hiatus from competition for the holiday break. The Gophers return to action in 2014 when they host Ohio State at Ridder Arena, Jan. 10-11, 2014.
