Minnesota boasts back-to-back national titles and an NCAA record 49-straight wins heading into the season


MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team announced its 2013-14 season schedule on Thursday with the Gophers looking to defend their back-to-back national championship titles and continue the program’s NCAA-record 49-game winning streak during the upcoming season.

After opening the season with an exhibition game against British Columbia at Ridder Arena on Sept. 27, Minnesota will begin its regular season by traveling to Hamilton, N.Y., to face Colgate on Oct. 4-5. The two teams met for the first time last season with the Gophers sweeping the Raiders in a two-game series at Ridder Arena.

The Gophers will return home to open the Western Collegiate Hockey Association schedule with a series against the Wisconsin Badgers on Oct. 11-12. Minnesota will host 16 regular-season home games at Ridder Arena during the upcoming season.

The following weekend, the Golden Gophers will travel to Duluth to face the UMD Bulldogs on Oct. 18-19 before continuing on the road to Bemidji State Oct. 25-26.

Minnesota then will see a home-and-home against Minnesota State on Nov. 1-2 with a home game on Friday and an away game Saturday. The Gophers will then travel to St. Cloud State on Nov. 8-9 before returning home to play host to North Dakota with a Saturday-Sunday series on Nov. 16-17.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, the Gophers will travel to New Haven, Conn., to face Yale on Nov. 23-24. Minnesota’s last meeting with the Bulldogs came in 1998.

Minnesota will play Princeton at home on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in a Saturday-Sunday series. Two league games at Ohio State on Dec. 7-8 will conclude the first half of the season.

To start the New Year, the Gophers will return to Ridder Arena to host Ohio State on Jan. 10-11. Minnesota will then see a series against Minnesota State Jan. 18-19 that begins with a home game on Saturday and an away game on Sunday.

January will conclude for the Gophers with a home series against St. Cloud State on Jan. 24-25 and an away series at North Dakota Jan 31- Feb. 1. The team will host Bemidji State on Feb. 7-8 before traveling to Wisconsin on Feb. 14-15. The Gophers will conclude its regular season with a home series against Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 21-22.

The first round of the WCHA playoffs will take place Feb. 28-March 2 with the high seeds hosting those series. The WCHA Final Face-off will be held at Bemidji’s Sanford Center on March 7-8.

The NCAA tournament begins with quarterfinal games March 14-15. Should the Gophers earn a spot in NCAA tournament play and advance to the Frozen Four, they will have the chance to defend their back-to-back national titles at the NCAA Championships in Hamden, Conn., on March 21 and 23. Quinnipiac will host this year’s NCAA Frozen Four.

Minnesota finished the 2012-13 season with a perfect 41-0-0 record and clenched their second NCAA title in two years and the fourth in program history. Minnesota was also named the Big Ten Women’s Team of the Year while head coach Brad Frost was tagged as the Big Ten Women’s Coach of the Year.
