Gopher Women's Basketball Recruiting Updates

Agree about different time/era. What I could track about Grace with AI:
1. Oral commitment to Arizona St. Withdrew the commitment when coach retired. Never enrolled.
2. Coach O had briefly recruited her while at South Dakota.
3. Signed NLI at West Virginia when Coach P was there, but never actually enrolled in classes or practiced.
4. Was released from her NLI when Coach P made her move... Grace followed... citing Coach P's system and the trust established during brief recruitment. She never received $$ until she was a Gopher.

Different time/era... certainly, but she has elected to stay... was or is there more money elsewhere? Perhaps, but she remains here.

Thanks for the timeline 😃

I saw North Tartan posted their rosters and noticed Cece Arico is playing with them this year. She is the daughter of Michigan coach Barnes Arico. She was in Long Island this high school season. I read she has several high major offers.
She joined the team last year and played in a tournament and then got injured. I thought it was odd she switched teams in the middle of the AAU season.

Gophers offer Kinsley Ketterhagen from Wisconsin and All Iowa Attack c/o 2028

Has offers from a lot of big ten schools in Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin

She is good, I think we should consider offering her sister's next year who r playing at UWGB this year. Ootsburg was the best team in WI thIs year. I would also consider offering her father an assistant coaching job to sweeten the pot. IMO they are very good players, but what do I know. This is kind of off topic but I would also think about hiring Chloe Johnson's favorite coach if it would get her to Minny. I know this is out there, so be kind if you think I am out of my mind.

I assume there is a limit to how many coaches you can have at a time. If so, to do what you suggest, you'd have to fire at least two of the current coaches. Not much of a reward for their efforts in getting the Gophers to where they are now. It wasn't that long ago that hiring a coach or father of a recruit was considered underhanded and frowned upon.

I agree with BBJones. Hiring a dad was a way to get around not paying the players, and there were rules about it, but they weren't ironclad. Since you can now pay the players, I'd think that will be less of a temptation. However if you threatened me as an incoming freshman with putting my dad in a position where he could keep daily tabs on me, you'd never hear from me again. :) My dad was a good guy and all, but....

My thoughts are more of we need.to get creative to be able to get someone of Chloe's ability. I've watched a lot of top women leave the state and if Chloe wants to stay, I think we should get creative and having a coach she is familiar with might help. There is no intention to fire anyone. I didn't think there was a limit on assistants.

Teams are allowed 6 coaches: head coach plus 3 assistants that are allowed to recruit off campus plus 2 more that can’t recruit off campus.

How many do we presently have?
According to the currently posted 26-27 roster, we have 6. I'm a little concerned about the idea of possibly passing up a coach that you have thoroughly vetted and agreed was the most qualified candidate that matched up perfectly with your team needs and philosophy, in favor of somebody's Dad or Club Coach, who may not match up with what your team/head coach needs, just because one of your players or recruits might feel a little more comfortable.

If you're gonna go there, better start polling your 2nd, 3rd and 4th best players to see if they want their personal coach on the team as well. Then, once the challenges start during practice or the season, which coach is a player going to listen to? The head coach (who is charge of the program) or the Dad, who might not even be somebody the head coach really wanted in the first place?

I'm sure there are a few isolated situations in which that has gone relatively smoothly, but probably very few. I would think that one would try very hard to not even go there.

The main example I can recall is OSU hiring Mitchell's dad as an assistant, coincidentally around the time she joined the Buckeyes. Who got stuck with her sister and her dad, who coincidentally left when Mitchell was done. She really shines as a pro and I really wonder how much she could have developed earlier, if she had been in a different situation (which, i suppose, could be on McGuff's ability to develop players...), perhaps with a coach who didn't maker her so "comfortable."

Kelsey Mitchell scored 3,402 points at Ohio State. I think she developed early enough.

I think most of Dawn's assistants have been with her at least since her days at South Dakota, if not longer. Assistant coaches are usually people who stick with the head coach for years, no matter where in the country that takes them and what school they're at. Letting them go just to hire a player's preferred coach is not taken lightly.

Per on3.com:
Top 2028 Chloe Johnson remains open in her recruitment but hopes to narrow after this AAU season. Johnson a 5-11 point guard has taken recent unofficial visits to Nebraska, Baylor, UCLA and USC, She noted that she also hopes to visit programs including Duke, North Carolina, and Illinois.

Not one mention of Minnesota in the article.

She may have already made it abundantly clear she has no interest in our program. If that’s the case then so be it. There are other fish in the sea. Players going to go where they want to go. Lots of people would rather see other places, get a degree from some where else. If that’s the case good luck to her. You want people who want to be here.

I agree; however, at some point this program will need to land a top 10 player if MN wants to continue to move the needle. There’s no reason we can’t.

I agree with you that there is no reason we can’t. I don’t agree that we have to. You need a team to finish in the top ten to be a top ten team. Don’t agree that you necessarily need a top ten player to do that.

If you to see Final Fours, then you can't lose these players.
How many on this forum would have thought we couldn't make it to the Sweet Sixteen with our current roster until we did it though? Honestly, just keep replacing players with ones as talented or slightly more talented as they graduate, and we'll be pretty set for success.

Only 7 of the last 60 top 10 recruits in ESPN top 100 stayed home. That means 88% of top 10 recruits go to another state. Yes I want to dominate in state recruiting but I will continue to say we are in the beginning of the teams growth. Gophers dominated the portal, got a top 2 recruit out of MN and the top recruit out of Wisconsin and Nebraska. Continue to build the program and then that one special player will want to stay home and we are not a flash in the pan one year program. I’m happy the gophers are at a spot in their program where they do not need a single player to save it, even though Chloe would have been an amazing add
