Only about 2 months until the fall season begins and, as far as I've seen, no definite word on Samedy's status or what the roster will consist of. Any news on those fronts?

I have not seen anything. I'm sure as soon as she posts the announcement on instagram, it will be all over in the vball discussion.

I personally thought she was as good as gone to the pro's. I guess we'll see.
 




Well, there you go.

Unless Miyabe is going to win Rollins' 6-rotation spot ... I feel bad for her. Not sure she'll beat out Wenaas.


Like last year, the lack of a middle attack is going to be the interesting thing to watch, at how much effect it has. Pittman being out of course is a big detriment to that.

Who knows if Myers can regain her form and replace Pittman as the M1. Our other middles are tall girls, for sure, but they seem slow.

Lot of these teams like Penn St, Purdue, Pitt, Texas, etc. have very athletic middles.

We just had no middle game last season. No D1 volleyball team can be successful without it. Coach Laura is back and I am hoping she has these girls working harder at building a connection with Shaffmaster.

Shaffmaster has a lot of work ahead of her. If and when she gets better the team will then have more success. More than likely we will be OOS again this season and MS just needs to work on improving her game to the next level.

It's hard to get very interested, if at all, in the fall 2021 VB season, when the Gophers don't even announce their roster, if they have one...
 


The transfer portal hasn't closed and practice hasn't started-both good reasons not to post a roster

There used to be a rule that one win over an FCS team per year can count towards bowl eligibility, but only if they had 90% of the scholarship max. Or something like that.

But I think they got rid of that rule.

Still probably won’t schedule them in football, as you say.

NCAA video challenge announcement from about a week ago. I'm not sure whether this will be implemented by the B1G.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel on Tuesday approved an experimental rule allowing women’s volleyball teams to begin a match with two video coach’s challenges in conference matches only for the 2021 season.

If the challenge results in the reversal of the original call, the team would retain the challenge.

If a match reaches the fifth set, each team would be awarded an additional challenge. Teams would be allowed to carry a maximum of two challenges into the fifth set.

For nonconference matches, the current rules that allow each team three challenges per match, regardless of the outcome of the video review, will be used. Each team will be awarded an additional challenge if the match reaches a fifth set.

The NCAA Women’s Volleyball Rules Committee said there is increasing support from coaches to allow teams to retain their challenge if the outcome is reversed.

This experimental rule will allow the committee to collect feedback and data on a potential rules change.

Based on data from last season, coaches would have lost their challenge 63% of the time. With only two challenges available for the experimental rule and a higher probability of losing the challenge, coaches may be more cautious as to when and what to challenge.

This could reduce the current use of challenges as legal delay tactics

No surprises.....see the roster has been updated with the removal of Atherton and PIttman and two returning Seniors, Miyabe and Samedy.
 



Despite the high transmissibiliy of the Delta variant of COVID, the U of M sent an email to students, faculty, and staff, indicating that because none of the U's five campuses are located in high tranmission areas, the U will not be reinstating their mask mandate. As a senior citizen student, I'm a bit hesitant sitting in a maskless student section for volleyball matches this fall. What do people think? Will there be a mask mandate for fans at Gopher volleyball matches?

I say this as a strong believer in masks in 2020 and early 2021 but… I am vaccinated; I am getting old; and aging people know that time goes by so fast. I want other people to see my face. I would like to see the faces of other people. I would like the same for my children but I am openly selfish on this part… I like seeing other people’s faces at the coffee house or grocery store, etc. and I like those people being able to see my face.

In my opinion, it is through the vaccine that we as humans have hope. Masks were an incredible important tool pre-vaccine and totally appropriate for those who would like to continue wearing them because it makes them feel more comfortable. But no mask mandates please.

Interesting, but your position goes against the latest CDC guidelines. And now, at least according to a Strib article, it appears that Hennepin County is in fact a "high transmission" area, putting us in the category for which the CDC now again recommends masks indoors, even for vaccinated people. Also, it's not "because it makes them feel more comfortable," but because we now know that vaccinated people can transmit the virus to others. And the more those transmissions keep occurring, the more virus mutations we're going to keep getting, often more dangerous variants.

I apologize if this discussion is more appropriate for the off-topic board, though the full houses at Gopher volleyball games makes those events almost unique for Gopher sports.

You are correct that a running debate is completely inappropriate in this forum (so I promise this is my last post!) but… Americans WAY overestimate the impact of their public policy on global outcomes. New and dangerous variants are almost certain to emerge out of the billions of people residing in the global south.

On this topic, fatalism makes good sense. Vaccinate! Booster vaccinate when it becomes available. But we got to live our lives because it is a smaller-than-minuscule percentage likelihood that Minnesota health policy will determine new and dangerous COVID variants… which we already have good strong vaccines that are almost certain to keep us out of the morgue.

Ha! That is precisely my goal too: keeping out of the morgue. And to the best of my knowledge, so far I've been successful.

Go Gophers! I'm already counting down the days to the home opener against Texas.
