Gopher Volleyball 2019

We don't know how good Neilson can be. Didn't t play much. If Hugh doesn't t think she is up to it, look for someone to transfer in

Maybe Hilley wants to come home? :p

Also move Barnes to libero? Just a thought...

This has been brought up before. I don't really see a difference in being DS or libero. Both get the same amount of play time. Someone with a better understanding of the game explain how this change would benefit the team.

Actually the libero gets more playing time. The libero gets six rotations and serves once during a full rotation. A DS gets three rotations (of 6) and serves once.

Actually, 5.5 rotations. They have to leave for 1 serve.

CC is a much better athlete. That allows her to get to more balls. She was spectacular for a large portion of the season. Unfortunately she was off against the quacks.

Everybody knows where the question mark lies for next season, so obviously all eyes are on what transpires at setter during the offseason.

Any potential setter transfer would likely weigh the possibility of simply being a bridge between next year and Shaffmaster's arrival in 2020.

As others have pointed out, the team is pretty much stacked everywhere else. Only lose SSS (absolutely HUGE loss), but return everybody else of consequence and add two big middles in Rubright and Husemann. In other words, if they can plug the setter hole, they're going to be darn good again.

I'd actually like to see Nielsen get her chance. She's waited patiently behind SSS for two years now and has undoubtedly worked closely with Sam while hopefully also learning from her. Regardless, it's all in Hugh's hands, so I'll trust his judgement.

Looking forward to seeing the team back in 2019!

She will get her chance.

But if there is a setter who wants to come in for 2019, no way we'll turn her away. Some people on VT have speculated that the Auburn freshman setter is looking to transfer. But she's from Illinois.

I know the actual thing is 6 rotations. But I think of serve and serve-receive as separate things ... they have different starting formations/positions after all. So yes, of those 12, the libero is on the court for 11 where as the DS is on for 5 or 6, depending on if she serves for the OH or not. In our case, Barnes serves for Hart.

She will get her chance.

Not only is she from Illinois, she is from Champaign.

Can we find a way to get SSS a 5th year of eligibility?

This isn't the end of her career ... right?? She has to give it a shot playing pro (or at least semi-pro ??) somewhere??

She’ll play professionally overseas if she wants to. Will be in the Team USA system with some of her former teammates. Not sure what her plans are obviously. Hard to imagine her being done playing though. Will be her choice if she is.

Minnpost; Pat Borzi: Has Gopher volleyball outgrown the PAV. Spoiler: probably not.

Which is a long and winding way (sorry) to address a lingering issue for next year’s Gophers — whether the team has outgrown the cozy, comfortable, 5,500-capacity Pav, and should move at least some Big Ten Conference matches next door to Williams Arena, which holds 14,625.

Easier proposed than done.

Gophers Coach Hugh McCutcheon opposes it, and McCutcheon carries such gravitas in the athletic department that it has zero chance of happening without his support. He loves the noise and energy in the Pav, and Minnesota’s 61-3 mark there the last four years offers a compelling argument to stay put. (The university dropping major bucks to air condition the Pav next year is another.) Three of those four seasons saw the Gophers go unbeaten at home in Big Ten conference play, critical for landing a high NCAA seed.

“We’ve got it good where we are,” McCutcheon said before last week’s Minneapolis Regional. “It’s not broken. We’re not looking to fix it.

“If for some reason we knew we could get into Williams and sell it out, for example, then great. But as we know, the margins in our conference are incredibly thin. To take an advantage away from our team on the off chance that maybe we could get a better crowd or something, it seems like we’re not really honoring our commitment to the program by doing that.”

Fine. But our friends from Lincoln offer an intriguing counterargument.

The Huskers navigated a similar dilemma in 2013, moving from the raucous Nebraska Coliseum (capacity 4,030) to the larger, newly renovated Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska was 454-30 in 37 seasons at the Coliseum, losing only six conference matches in that time, at one point winning an NCAA-record 90 straight at home. Nebraska Coach John Cook preferred to stay put. But Tom Osborne, the renowned and respected former football coach, was the athletic director at the time, and nobody says no to Tom Osborne.

Extremely selfish position by McCutcheon on this. Very disappointing.

Playing in Williams would actually give people outside the Pav cult of season ticket holders a chance to go to the game and watch the awesome vball team!

Yes, it's idiotic, forgive my French. As Hugh says, "It's not broken. We're not looking to fix it." Sell outs are not a bad thing.

It's not like they have been selling out for years and years. They've had growth for the last few years with some good teams with really attractive local kids on the team to further the appeal. And so they have recently reached a point where they are selling out. This is a very good home field advantage.

"Let's move into a huge cavern so everyone gets to see!". Yeah right, great idea.

Maybe we should tell the U to hold off on putting air conditioning in the PAV because we might be moving soon.

SELLOUTS ARE NOT A BAD THING!

Must be one of the selfish season ticket holders at the Pav. Of course you want to do whats best in your own self interests.

Not talking about a permanent move. Maybe just a COUPLE games.

Perhaps they should raise the prices a bit and have scholarship sitting. See how that works. We know how it works in men's sports. Fair is Fair.

And watch a player fly off the court and kill themselve running after a ball? Maybe the Crazy Blanket Lady can sprint around the court and catch them in her cozy polar fleece?
Become a “selfish” season ticket holder. Problem solved. We did five years ago.

If they offered a Saturday only package, I might opt for that. Fridays are not the best option most weeks.

I've been to a number of matches at Williams (I think Illinois back in 2012 was the last match). It's okay; but the PAV is a better volleyball venue and yes there is the raised floor issue.

It also seemed that when they did a Burst the Barn match it took up most of the marketing effort for very little gain. I remember $1 tickets to a Nebraska match and I don't recall the crowd being particularly large. Now if you spent $30 million, gutted Williams, put in better and closer to the court seating, reduced capacity to about 8,000 and totally redid the concourses etc.; I'd get behind it.

Of course, the basketball teams would have to relocate. Or, we could put the same effort into the PAV; although its more limited footprint makes it harder to put improvements into the fan areas and more productive to put the money into the team area amenities. Anyway, in seven months or so, AIR CONDITIONING will help the PAV feel like a volleyball palace- at least for a little while.

It has worked so well for men's hockey. Remember the crowds at the old Mariucci arena.

Season tickets were not that hard to come by. First year season ticket holder. Ended up 8 rows up on the 10 foot line. Sell out the Pav with season tickets. Then we can worry about a larger seating capacity. Renewals for season tickets went out today. Mine have been ordered.

Renewed my season tickets today. Sounds like it’s mostly sold out, per my extremely helpful ticket rep today.

Gophers add transfer setter Kylie Miller from UCLA. She was ranked #11 in her class (same class as Hart and Pittman).

Miller is a big (maybe huge) pickup. She was one of names mentioned as a possible transfer from the start. Glad to have it official.

If you aren't selling out a venue almost every game, consistently, for several years in a row, then you absolutely do not move into a bigger venue. There needs to be a true and deep interest and almost a guarantee it won't fade for something like a down season. There needs to be a long waiting list for season tickets and in my very humble opinion, I think there also needs to be the one thing that has eluded the Gopher Volleyball team so far, at least one Natl Title, evidence to the masses of potential band wagon fans that another one is possible, and this aspect may be something specific to the Gopher's situation, being in a state full of band wagon fans that have a lot of options.
