Gopher Volleyball 2018

Lohman to TCU for a year of beach. Good luck Molly!

Did we get Lexi Sun yet? I'm waiting for the good news.

Transferring. Overstocked at OH, so it it surprising the OH from Iowa is transferring in.
Need another MB.

Need another MB: Even with my totally untrained volleyball eye, it was obvious in 2017 that was needed. Anything been done to remedy that?

The last time Minnesota hosted the volleyball Final Four was 1988, when Texas upset Hawaii for the title before a then-record crowd of 9,107 at Williams Arena. Now, double it. The past two volleyball finals have drawn record crowds of 17,561 (in Omaha) and 18,351 (in Kansas City, Mo.).

With volleyball’s popularity in Minnesota soaring, and Target Center newly renovated, Fasbender said the atmosphere for the next Final Four “is going to be amazing.” McGinnis said ticket sales are already ahead of the Omaha and Kansas City pace. No wonder the NCAA likes it here.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but the Gophers will be playing at Stanford again. It's part of the Big 10/Pac 12 Challenge with Oregon and Penn State.

Does anyone know if the schools in this event stay the same for 4 years so the Cardinal would have to come to Minneapolis for a change? :p

A chance to beat the Quacks!

Freshman opposite hitter Stephanie Samedy (Clermont, Fla.) has been selected to USA Volleyball's Collegiate National Team as a part of the China Tour, announced today by USA Volleyball. The China Tour marks the third time Samedy has worn the red, white and blue. She competed at the 2016 NORCECA Women's U20 Continental Championship and also with the USA Youth National Team.

Athletes were selected through the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held March 2-4 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The CNT-China roster will train and compete in China from May 20-31.

McCutcheon tweeted yesterday that the Gophers received another verbal commitment.

The commit is apparently Carter Booth from Benilde-St. Margarets, who is the daughter of former Penn State basketball center and current Denver Nuggets assistant general manager Calvin Booth.

Carter spent this year with the Benilde varsity and dominated despite being just an eighth grader. Alternate sites list her height as between 6-5 and 6-7 depending upon who you believe.

Another really young commit (she'd be the same class as Mckenna Wucherer), which I'm always a bit skeptical about. But if this sticks, it looks like she could be a stud.

Gophers add two for 2018:

University of Minnesota head volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon has announced two additions to the 2018 roster. The Golden Gophers welcome outside hitter Claire Sheehan (Isanti, Minn.) and middle blocker Paulina Swider (Lublin, Poland) to the program. Both are scheduled to join the team next semester.

I just noticed that I have Bailey M playing 5 years. I removed her from 2022 setters but am too lazy to reshare.

According to Sky U Mah Gopher and some people on Volley Talk, we have a commitment from 6-6 MH Carter Booth. Currently at Benilde, but looks like she will be moving to Denver to be with her Dad. Glad they got a commitment from her before she leaves the area. Hugh is really getting some top talent for the future.

Kansas State released their schedule and they are coming to Minneapolis for a tournament Sept 14-15 along with Green Bay.

Schedule is posted. I am out of town for Penn State, Maryland and Wisconsin games. I have two season tickets. Will sell these games. Make me a offer through PM.

Gopher volleyball standout Stephanie Samedy has had a busy month since finishing her freshman year of college. After ending her classes in early May, the Clermont, Fl., native traded in her maroon and gold for red, white and blue, to compete with USA Volleyball's Collegiate National Team. Competing on a 10-day trip from May 20-31, Samedy and the rest of the CNT-China Tour went 4-1 during competition.

GS: What was your favorite part of the trip, both on and off the court?
SS: My favorite parts of the trip on the court would be the challenge of us players having to come together and preform as a team at such a high level and knowing that we're doing it to represent. USA.

Off the court, I would say just being able to see different parts of China and how they all vary from each other and from the States was eye opening. Along with being able to learn and experience an entirely different culture from the food we ate to the different places we visited like Great Wall.

Anyone follow the VNL's ? USA women (w Tori Dixon contributing) won the league. USA men are in the final tournament.

Still 7+ weeks out from ACC challenge games against UNC and FL State. Any thoughts on starting 8 (including Lib and DS)? Especially at M2??

EDIT** - my own thoughts on starting 8:

H1 - Hart
M1 - Pittman
S - SSS
Opp - Samedy
L/DS - Barnes & McGraw, not sure which

H2 and M2 - would they consider moving Martin to middle? Or do they feel good with Morgan? There are a couple true freshmen middles, including one from Poland. Otherwise, is H2 all but Rollins to lose? Or will Martin, or perhaps Sheehan get the reps?

Reusse on Seliger-Swenson:

Samantha Seliger-Swenson completed spring semester at the University of Minnesota and then, as part of the pursuit of a degree in business and marketing, she spent 3½ weeks in Italy...

..."The class was 'Great Minds of the Renaissance,'" Sam said. "We spent time in Florence, which is great but also very hectic and filled with tourists. What I enjoyed most was Tuscany … taking a bike ride on a quiet road, looking over the gorgeous valleys, visiting a castle that dates to 1011, something like that.''

Those 3½ weeks were the longest period that Sam had spent away from volleyball since before she could walk.

Really.

"It was definitely appreciated, to go through three weeks without your mind on volleyball,'' Sam said. "The interesting thing is that near the end of our time there, I really started to miss it. I think not being around the game for a month has made me appreciate it more than ever.''

That appreciation had a challenge this week. Coach Hugh McCutcheon's summer camps are taking place in the university's fieldhouse. There's no air conditioning in that ancient building, of course.

It wasn't bad in there for the young players and student coaches on Friday. But on Thursday, with 90-plus degrees and suffocating humidity … well, it was a long way from looking out over Tuscany grandeur from the expansive front yard of an ancient castle.

"Yes, it was,'' Sam said. "The heat here gets us ready for practicing at the Pavilion.'

Do either of you have thoughts on M2 & H2 for 2018? Too early to have any clue??
