Gopher Volleyball 2016

Goehner nowhere to be seen again tonight after nowhere to be seen last Saturday night vs. Green Bay.

The mystery continues...

Meanwhile, Minnesota swept the Terps 13, 14, and 12. The Gophers had too many offensive options for Maryland's overwhelmed defenders. (Wilhite with 15 kills from both the front and the back line was trouble enough.) All in all a good warmup for the Buckeyes tomorrow night even though Minnesota didn't have their normal number of blocks. Taylor Morgan made a late appearance.

For some reason, Maryland seemed intent on driving the ball into the antenna. Two notable items: it was a match which didn't allow challenges and it was much cooler in the Pav than last week.

The Goehner mystery is solved. She was hospitalized with a staph infection.

In a nice finish to a Gopher Football, Volleyball double header, Minnesota took down #17 Ohio State in fours sets (16, 15, -18, 22). The Gophers dominated the first set taking a 8-1 lead and never looking back. The second set saw Minnesota taking control after a quick Buckeye start. The final two sets were battles with Ohio States serve causing problems for the Gophers. Minnesota was helped by the Buckeyes eleven service errors.

Of note: Alexi Hart had her right hand heavily wrapped like you would for a severely sprained thumb. Hart still clubbed nine often memorable kills (second to Wilhite's 15 kills). Both Pittman and Goehner were on the bench in warmups.

Also: #1 Nebraska lost the first two sets at Michigan State and then rallied to win (the final set was 16-14).

Nebraska faced a match point (14-13) and won the next 3 points to win. Would have been nice to see MSU knock them off.

MInnesota's block and diversified offense was too much for the Hoosiers with Minnesota sweeping (17, 15, 17). Hannah Tapp had 11 kills (hitting .571) and Molly Loman 9 kills (hitting .800). The three sets were similar: close early with Minnesota pulling away at the end. The Gophers controlled the middle most of the night.

Of note: Hart still had her right hand heavily wrapped and Hannah's thumb was also wrapped (I think that was also the case last week).

#3 Wisconsin wins the last two games to sneak by #14 Purdue 3-2 tonight. Minnesota gets them on Sunday. I'd have preferred the Boilers win that one...

The Gopher box score said Lohman had 9 kills and no errors. Against Indiana, the middles posted 26 kills (Lohman 9 (1.000), Hannah 11 (.571) and Paige 6 (.333)).

The Buckeyes strolled into Lincoln and walked out with a victory over #1 Nebraska. After dropping the first set 25-17, Ohio State took the next three 21, 21, and 13. The Buckeyes dominated the final set and now are 4-4 versus the Huskers in the B1G.

Wow, impressive by the Buckeyes.

Behind Sarah Wilhite's 19 kills and .621 hitting, Minnesota swept Purdue in West Lafayette 18, 18, 23. The final set was battle-in the middle of the set. I think there were side-outs on about 14 consecutive points. Purdue eventually grabbed a 23-22 lead before Minnesota closed it out. The Gophers hit .457 for the match and looked as good as they have all season. Minnesota will likely head to Penn State as #1.

We played awfully well today. It was great to have a team on ESPN and have Karch announcing. Purdue was trounced the first two sets and had two not good points to lose when it was 23-23. Ann excited to see us in Happy Valley. We owe them for Sat...

1-1 after 2 sets in Happy Valley.

Gophers blew leads of 11-3 and 24-22 in set 1 before losing 29-27. Came back and won set 2 25-21. Goehner got some time in set 2.

Well shoot. This was my first chance to see the team play this year. Very surprised to see them take it on the chin like that in the last two games. Obviously Penn State in an off year is still a very good team but the Gophs really fell apart in that 4th set, especially handling the serve.

Here's hoping things turn around on Sunday. Can't wait to see them in person!

Gophers passing really wasn't there tonight and that will make most teams struggle. Really couldn't believe they blew set 1 the way they did. Penn State really benefited being at home not only from the crowd but also got a number of calls from the refs. Heard the announcers talk about how Penn State is an arena that doesn't have replay and I'd think that all B1G schools should have that capability and it should be required. Being able to challenge a call definitely would have changed a few tonight.

Washington and Lee were deadly. Hell of a battle though. Unfortunately, Wilhite had back to back service and serve receive errors in the fifth. It's nice to see Hart consistently pounding cross court.

Man they gagged that first set. Should have been a sweep even with the struggles. Blew a huge opportunity.

The Gophers warmed up for their Wednesday night match in Madison by sweeping Northwestern 17, 21, 17. Minnesota's ball handling was a bit off in the second set and they required a late surge to lead 2-0 into the break. However, the second set featured one of the match highlights. Midway into the second set Northwestern's Symone Abbott had amassed 8 kills and become a severe annoyance on the outside. Then Hannah Tapp's got Abbott and the set under control with terrific back to back blocks on Abbott. Abbott had one kill the rest of the way.

Hannah had 13 kills and hit .417. Wilhite posted 14 kills (several from the back row) while hitting .314.

Wisconsin is ranked #1 for first time in school history. Nebraska is #2, Gophers #3. Time to knock off #1 ourselves now! Penn State is #10.

In DII, three Minnesota schools hold the top spots. #1 Minn-Duluth, #2 Concordia - St. Paul, #3 SW Minn State. Winona State is #7.

And in RPI through October 9:

1. Wisconsin
2. Texas
3. Nebraska
4. Minnesota
5. San Diego
6. North Carolina
7. Stanford
8. Purdue (1-5 in the B1G)
9. Florida
10. Michigan

An awesome performance! Minnesota swept the number one Badgers in Madison 20, 18, 14. The Gophers out blocked, outhit and pretty much dominated every category. Minnesota's blocking controlled the match and kept Carlini off balance (it reminded me of Carlini's freshman match at the PAV when the Gophers flummoxed the Badger setter). Across the net, Seliger-Swenson was at the top of her game.

The ladies were locked and loaded from the start. Expected a close match, but that was both a beat-down and a clinic. When they bring it like that, there aren't many teams that can keep pace. Great job Hugh and ladies! :D

Fantastic match for the ladies tonight. When the third set started, I was ready for our inevitable fall where we let them get up on us in set 3, and let them take that momentum to a win in set 4 and anyone's game in set 5. Instead, we slammed the door in their face, dominated set 3 just like the first two sets and swept the #1 team in the nation on their home floor. SWEEET!

The biggest problem for the Badgers was that they were seldom able to get the Gophers out of system with their serving. As a result, the Gophers got sideouts 75 percent of the time for the match, including 93 percent in the third set.

“Being ready was not our issue tonight,” Sheffield said. “Our issue was we couldn’t get them out of system, number one, and that was because we weren’t putting enough pressure on them from the service line. And they passed the ball.

“That’s why we were getting a lot of their attacks coming off our hands and going between us and the net or going out of bounds. We just weren’t getting our hands across quick enough. That’s the tempo of their offense.
