Meh, it’s an historic venue (yes, even for football) and the only time we’ll ever play there, so why not have a little fun with it.

Not sure how much you think helmet decals cost but going to go out on a limb that just sticking with one helmet design all year would not save enough money to pay the assistant coaches more.

Don’t know about decals but helmets are 4-5 hundred a piece. Each player has at least 3 separate helmets. Decals change, colors do not. If we stuck with one color you would save the program maybe 70k. Not enough to make a dent in coaches salaries.

The entire uniform budget is probably in the range of $250-500K each year, and even that is likely an overestimation. That's really going to make an enormous difference in the college football arms race. You tell 'em, though.

I think the issue is the optics/public perception of a department running a multi-million dollar annual deficit charging every student hundreds in fees while pulling vanity stunts like the all black unis that have zero relation to the school. Analogous to the legendary welfare queen with the iPhone Pro. Sure, it’s a rounding error and largely irrelevant or unrepresentative in the grand scheme but students like my niece have better things to spend money on than athletic department waste or Coyle’s bloated salary. School is expensive enough. Hold a bake sale.
 

Numbers haven't been disclosed by The "U" in over a decade, but around 2013 or 2014 when we re-upped with Nike, they were paying us a reported ~$1.5MM/year to wear their gear. And I'm 100% sure that the income has gone up from that, substantially.

Hell...if Nike teamed up with Victoria's Secret and wanted us to play is these, I'd just say "thanks for the money"

Have you been in any work team meetings in the past 10 years?!? Need “special days/events” (i.e. donut day, pizza day, etc., etc.) seemingly every week to keep the staff “engaged”, “motivated”, “invested”. So very different than when I started - not saying it’s bad (though I neither care one wit, nor need such seemingly silly things, at all), the young men playing for our Gophers are 18-23 years old. Ergo . . .

BTW - I have zero problems with the various uni choices, generally. If the players like/need/want them - fine by me. Would just rather worry about how they play in them, versus how they look in them.

I certainly understand corporate bs. Does nothing to motivate employees, they're just looking for the free lunch. I want my team to be hungry.

Theres's always one guy in every design debate who absolutely cannot wait to tell you how incredibly basic and utilitarian they are and how anything at all beyond that is a frivolous frou-frou waste. It's like that hipster who can't wait to tell you they don't own a TV. It's the FREE SPACE of any design debate bingo
