Gopher Softball - 2016

Gophers losing to Iowa 3-2 in the bottom of the 3rd. Dang, really hope it isn't one of those games.
Houlihan goes deep in the top of the 4th to tie it up.
Iowa with 5 hits off Groenewegen in 3 innings thus far.
Gophers with a 7-3 lead to start the 6th.
Minnesota scores 7 more times in the top of the 7th to increase the lead to 14-7.
Stober in to pitch the 7th.
Gophers win 14-7.

Michigan beat Rutgers 9-1.

Actually, the Gophers won 14-3. I thought the game started at 7:00, so when I started watching it was already 3-3 in the top of the fifth with runners on first and second. It was all Minnesota after that. Iowa sorta flailed around in the field.

Ignatius, of course you are right. My only excuse, however feeble, is the Gophers having 7 for a bit and also scoring 7 in the 7th. Just zoned out when posting. Thanks for setting me straight. I also thought it started at 7. See, there's that number again!

Gophers over Iowa 9-2. Anderson goes all 7 innings, allowing no earned runs and 5 hits, striking out 6. Houlihan cooled down with only 2 hits in 4 at bats today. LeMay with 4 RBI's.

Michigan 11-1 over Rutgers.

Gophers beat Iowa 12-0. (Didn't catch any of it) From the box score, looks like Parlich and Houlihan each had 3 hits. Houlihan has to be one of the front runners for Freshman of the Year in the Big Ten. She is second in batting average for conference games. She's 7th in slugging percentage. 13th in on base percentage. 6th in runs scored. 3rd in hits. 9th in runs batted in. 6th in doubles. 12th in home runs. 9th in stolen bases.
And of course Palkovich was hit by a pitch today. Leads the conference in that category. Fearless at doing that.
Groenewegen with the start. She went 4 innings with Anderson throwing the 5th.

Dumb question but why would they give the 1 seed a shorter time to rest before the championship game?

Dumb question but why would they give the 1 seed a shorter time to rest before the championship game?
Think they switch every year. (Which really doesn't answer your question, but it's the best I could come up with.)

Does anyone have information about next years recruiting class.?

The recruit from Oregon and the two from Iowa are studs, and Kendall Judge is supposed to have a very good rep on the mound. She also took her final visits to Auburn and Alabama if that legitimizes her. Program's future looks bright.

Here's some recent numbers on Judge during this high school season.
Innings pitched-80.2
Won loss record 11-1
ERA 1.04
Strikeouts-118

Current RPI for B1G squads

Purdue-83
Michigan State-105 8-15, 27-27

Gophers get the winner of the Illinois-Michigan State game.
Notable wins by Illinois. 4-1 over Florida State. 5-4 over Long Beach State. Beat Nebraska 8-3 and 10-2. Coming into the tourney hot, winning 7 of their last 8.
Notable wins by Michigan State. Well, they have beaten Wisconsin once, Indiana twice and Ohio State twice. Have won 5 of their last 7.

2017- Pitcher/1st base. Hannah Bailey out of the San Diego area. Northern S D pitcher of the year as a freshman. Great to see the staff picking up talent from all over the country. Now keep more of the in-state talent home. Looking good

The Pitcher of the Year had to be extremely close. Award went to Betsa, which is hard to argue since Michigan won the conference and she is their number one. Groenewegen with Pitcher of the Week 5 times and Betsa grabbed it 2 times. (Think I'm correct on that.)

B1G Tourney scores

Ohio State beat Rutgers 5-0.
Illinois will be the Gopher's opponent after defeating Michigan State 3-2.
Purdue-Nebraska in the 3rd inning, no score. Nebraska beats Purdue 8-0.
Indiana and Wisconsin play each other later this evening. Indiana with a 1-0 lead over Wisconsin in the 3rd.

98 games being played today as the conference tournaments are underway.
Some top 25 teams playing today,
#14 Washington is beating Stanford 5-0 in the 3rd.
#1 Florida is playing Mississippi. Game is delayed.
#23 Notre Dame is leading Virginia Tech 1-0. Game is delayed.
#6 Florida State shut out Pitt 8-0.
#10 Louisiana-Lafayette over Georgia State 13-0.
#9 Tennessee beat South Carolina 5-1 in extra innings.
#7 James Madison, the highest ranked of the non major conference schools, 14-2 over Townson.
#13 LSU over #11 Kentucky 3-1.
#22 Florida Atlantic, coached by perhaps the best female pitcher of all time (certainly the best sling shot thrower ever), the ageless Joan Joyce, beat Louisiana Tech 7-4.
#4 Alabama against #8 Auburn was postponed.
#17 Fresno State against UNLV later tonight.
#21 Arizona against California later tonight.
#3 Oregon plays Utah later tonight.

Wasn't able to catch any of the game today. Gophers over Illinois 2-0 to move on. (Did watch the replay.)
It's Minnesota against Northwestern. The Wildcats beat Ohio State 3-1 in the first game today.
Penn State beat Nebraska 8-7.
Michigan beat Indiana 10-0. Hutchins had Betsa go 3 innings and Driesenga go the final 2. Betsa with 52 pitches and Driesenga with 32. In comparison Groenewegen had to throw 112 today.
Northwestern also split duties in the circle in their win over Ohio State. Wood went 3.1 innings and threw 68 pitches. Letourneau went 3.2 and threw 44 pitches. When the Gophers lost to the Wildcats in conference play 10-2, it was Letourneau who beat them. The setting for that series was a Friday game that the Gophers won 16-0. Rain out on Saturday forcing a doubleheader on Sunday with Groenewegen starting the first game with relief from Anderson and then Anderson and Stober getting knocked around in the second game on Sunday.

Here's a couple links for the Gopher-Illinois game box score.
The first link is from "Tournament Central" and a glaring mistake on Groenewegen's record.

This link has her correct record.

Allister is coming right back with Groenewegen today.

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Groenewegen all over a Wood pitch to put the Gophers in front 3-0 in the first inning. Huge home run!
Wildcats cut the lead to 3-2 still in the first inning. Groenewegen not missing any bats in this inning. Gophers not looking sharp defensively so far.
Gophers still in a rain delay. Leading 6-4, top of the 5th.
Gophers move on to the championship game by defeating Northwestern 8-4. Groenewegen, Palkovich and Macken homered.

Have they moved the championship to tomorrow yet? If not, they won't be getting started until 8:30 or so tonight...

Well, looks like Betsa started in the 6-1 victory against Penn State, threw 2.2 innings, 57 pitches, but only 27 strikes. Driesenga came in and tossed the next 4.1, 46 pitches, 30 strikes.

Yeesh... rough night for Sydney Dwyer. She couldn't hit a beachball if she tried tonight. Fun game though! Tied at 3-3, going into extra innings against the 2nd ranked team in the country. Can't ask for much more. They have to find the clutch factor now before Michigan goes in for the kill, because it's only a matter of time with a team like them.

Update 1: Michigan with 2 runners on, none out. Gophers in dangerous territory now.
Update 2: Gophers get out of it. Excellent work by Groenewegen on the mound tonight. On to the bottom of the eighth, top of the order up to try and win it.

Now it is time to take home the championship.
