Gopher Hockey Season Thread 25-26

haha Bonin can be extreme and a downer for sure, but are you willing to acknowledge that he was 100% correct about the way this season would go before it even started?

I even thought this year would be a step back. It just gets old when most posts by him is either "this team sucks or fire Bob." I know that most of the games from this point out, the Gophers will be seen as underdogs. Everyone in North America knows Bonin21's views. If at the end of the year Bob or the AD thinks it is time to move on, so be it. I will support their decision and the team.

i mean last year we spent the entire year ripping snuggy, the number of captains, and that BC was going to kill everyone. this offseason it was that BU and PSU would dominate.

he will be forever unhappy until we win one. until the next year when we don't win back to back. think all vanek is saying posting the exact same thing on an anonymous message board is just annoying. There are few enough of us that actually come here and read things that one hopes you're going to maybe read something insightful or that could be discussed (which bonin is absolutely capable of as he does know hockey).

Prepare for another shit show of a weekend
tough series coming up for sure. was happy they showed some heart/fight on saturday after wanting to leave on Friday and with a 1st period saturday that felt it was going to be the same. LDP was very very good last weekend so hopefully we can somehow find him a revenge win this weekend. kids deserved it for how he's played this year behind a very very very mediocre team.

personally, think we match up better with MSU than Michigan as MSU plays a very structured/disciplined game, but don't think they have the same depth of team speed across the lineup. That said, they won't beat themselves. would view this one as more like the UND series where if we play our game and get solid tending, we can be in it at the end.

Three (3) questions for you:

1. Do you believe it takes a special kind of hockey genius to be able to look at our roster before the season and come to the conclusion that this was going to be a rough year?

2. Is there another Gopher fan that you're aware of that doesn't acknowledge a coaching change is needed and the U needs to find a way to invest more into the Gopher Hockey program?

3. Is there any other person that even remotely reaches the sheer volume of vomit-inducing negativity towards this program, good times and bad, than bonin21?

Nobody is giving Bob a free pass even after the tragic loss of his son. Bob is a good man and a good coach and despite that, anyone paying attention already knows a change is needed. This isn't a "visionary" revelation.

You don't get your a$$ booted from the most prominent Gopher Hockey fanatic message board because you're a true "fan". He's the kind of "fan" that you pray to the Gods doesn't have the seat next to you as a season ticket holder.

Oh how quickly people have come over to the Fire Motzko side after calling those of us that saw it earlier fools for trying to start the rebuild sooner. And when Barr gets hired wow will the people saying he's not the right guy be quiet again...

Sorry...I lost interest after "Oh".

I think most RATIONAL fans took a wait and see stance on this year, rather than wanting him fired after week 1. You have wanted him fired since the day after the Frozen Four in Tampa, and probably a couple of years before that. Are you going to hold the next coach's feet to the fire when he doesn't get every 5 star recruit in America, Canada, or in Mn in year 1? I bet you will blame Bob for a few years. But hey, you are an elite hockey mind that knows all of the answers before the questions are asked.

This one is wildly frustrating as they have not been outplayed by any stretch with ample chances they can’t score on and an apparently very loose Trey Augustine glove. Score could be 2-0 the other way and it wouldn’t at all feel undeserved

I just enjoy the irony of his user name since I will assume it was chosen as some tribute to the halcyon days of Gopher Hockey where they also failed to get it done all four years he was there, Hobey Baker notwithstanding.

3 zip is an accurate reflection. Gophers suck

8-15 and an NPI of 38 with a roster that includes 13 NHL draft picks, albeit no first rounders, but these kids aren’t scrubs either. It’s much worse than a step back unfortunately.

Penn state celebrating in front of the student section after a huge tussle with 10 seconds to go. Hastings decides to skip the handshake line and Geadowsky is surprised. Classless all the way.

Wisconsin is gonna take out all that anger on the Gophers, expect some really lopsided score in the upcoming series.

Your top returning D man for next year has 4 points in 22 games. Neither Phillips nor Grimes will come in and do anything offensively. It is an absolute disaster for next year as you have zero top four defensemen and you will not find more than two top four defensemen this late in the game.

I have a pretty solid feeling, if you’re willing to go for it and offer them a role and possible NIL, that there are more than certainly going to be defensemen in the portal who can play top 4 minutes given there are a bunch doing exactly that this year.

Bookman and Wallberg look good at WMU. Robertson has 15 points at Michigan. Ralph has been solid at MSU. ditto on Sabo at OSU. Gadowsky moved (he’s looked meh to me but he still can eat minutes as a top 4). Dubinsky doing same at Wisconsin. Haven’t watched much St. Cloud so can’t speak on smoliniski or loftus, but both are producing nicely

You will have to pay/recruit these guys hard (and have Bob or whoever is the coach actually realize that this is a problem, which it would be pretty hard to realize he realizes that given he’s sat multiple of them this year and is playing Mitts and Thomas 30min a night), but the portal will have help again this year, including one-two year guys who don’t mess much with your future incoming guys timelines as I’m pretty sure we all agree we have multiple guys on the team it would be perfectly fine if they go back to being practice players only

They don’t all need to come in and light up the stat sheets. They need guys who can play smart hockey, play with some speed, and start a breakout while not making the number of mistakes these guys are

I feel alright about whipple playing top 4. The rest yeah it’s hard to feel real good about where they’ll be, but some of this is made worse by how badly they’re hemmed in continually too

This team is so bad the broadcast has spend half the period talking about leading the country in blocked shots like that's a good thing.

Happy to see Miller has the power play working well this year. That’s a plus.
Mooney Ziemer Lamb apparently being on the ice for every single power play goal this year is insane. Zero depth at forward but also just a crazy stat

Edit: if this stat was accurate it's no longer valid

Right off the facemask and in. Love it. Gophers looking fired up tonight.

Edit.....another goal to make it 3-1 late in the 2nd period.

Gophers get their first win of 2026.

Badgers have lost five in a row. They are pretenders and not contenders like the absolutely stacked Michigan teams.

A fucking incredible play to save a Gopher goalie goal. What a shot by the goalie.
i did love everyone booing the defenseman after he blocked it, even if the students probably were just booing over the culvers and not that that would've been incredibly historic

overall that was fun. hopefully this was some young guys learning to win. I'm not optimistic but they have an additional 5 very winnable games in a row.

as an aside, BU now under .500 again. some of this is team softness and the chances they give up (shocker that a bunch of draft picks don't all end up cohesive or playing defense) but Yegorov has also been bad this year. His CHIP (CHNs factor of how important a player is basically) is lower than DiPasquo's and he's had a -4.62 xGA

Not that it would have dramatically changed the results of this awful season but if we had this version of LDP in the first half of the season that’s worth probably at least a couple more wins.

Feeling good that he can be the guy next year. Airey has hopefully seen his last game wearing the M.
