Gopher Hockey Season Thread 25-26

Good thing is you said you are taking this year off from Gopher hockey. Your quote was: ( I'm just gonna wait this year out, try to sell my FF tickets to at least break even, and hope the new era starts next spring.)
So, if you are a man of your word see you next year.
Wait the year out doesn't mean not watch the games on TV. It just means I know it's not a title season whereas for the last four or five they have been contenders and in with a chance.

Glad to know that you already know who the winner is, the seasons first game hasn’t even been played yet. Any of a number of teams can win it. At this time Minnesota has just as good a chance as anyone. Your such a pessimist it’s ridiculous.

They do not have as good of a chance as anyone. That's not how life works lol.

Motzko names three captains with a C. Didn't learn from last year that if everyone has a C, no one is the captain.

Does anyone have a list of how many 1st round draft picks have been on the last few champs?

Tufte (UMD) and Buium (DU) are the only ones in like the last 8 years or so. You then have boeser and schmaltz (think he was a 1st rounder) from unds title

Michigan (and BC) of course have won 5 or so preseason titles in the last few years so depends on whether you believe in real titles or bonins preseason anointing

Different ballgame now that more first round picks are able to come down. More teams with first rounders will win titles.

Go crawl in a hole! Christ you’re a dickhead. Michigan has shown that so well lately. All those draft picks and they’ve been kept off the board for years now. Any team can win it at any time. Are some better then others on paper before a game has even been played, yes, doesn’t matter they all start from game one of the season.

For all at home, this means only ASU, BC, BU, Mich, MSU, UND, PSU and WI are the only teams that should watch this year. Luckily that means we’ve already got the frozen four and basically every team aside from any pesky autobids already locked into the tournament and Bonin should be able to sell his tickets for good profit as und is basically a lock to be there with 2 first rounders and a guy who will go top 3 next year

As a side note, I also bet more Canadians win titles so the season is over if you don’t have a bunch of them too. And guys who formerly played in the CHL.

Nobody said wmu had a chance last year either. It’s harder and you have to play better team hockey to do so then just outtalent teams, but if that was the case BC, BU and Michigan would’ve won every year for the last decade. Don’t know if I see this team as being able to do it, but that feeling wouldn’t have changed if Rombach was taken 3 picks earlier (hence why the first round comment is even more obscenely silly)

Bob and his old school the only two from the two best conferences to look past the CHL.

Sounds like Townsend and maybe one other forward is hurt so you'll likely get Begley or Harris this weekend...

I'm expecting a 2010-11 type season from this team. About 14 losses and tough to make the tournament. They could then have a 2011-12 type season next year when McKenna goes and MSU has to reload. Unfortunately we'll all be one year older so it's not much fun to think ahead that far.

On a nostalgic note with Michigan Tech coming to town it’s more or less the 50th anniversary of the three consecutive NCAA hockey finals between the Gophers & Huskies. I was in 5th; 6th & 7th grade in those years. (The 74-75 season was our first year with season tickers.). A few memoirs: Brad Shelstad stoning a hype-talented MTU team 4-2. My recollection is we were significantly outshot in the game but we buried our chances—in the best tradition of a Herb Brooks team. It was a terrific career amateur hockey bookend for Shelstad who became a hero to many shutting-out Edina 1-0 for Southwest in the 1970 high school hockey finals. In 1975, MTU exacted its revenge beating Brooks’ best/second best team 6-1 after Minnesota failed to capitalize on a number of great scoring chances in the first period. The outcome may have been predicted by the Huskies sweeping the Gophers (after Minnesota had clinched the WCHA championship) in Houghton the last week of the season. In 1976, a physical and lunch-pail third place WCHA Gopher team had to battle through many obstacles along the way: the famous 3OT win (Pat Phippen!) over MSU in East Lansing in a total goals WCHA playoff series in about its 145th minute between the two games; the bench-clearing brawl in the semi-finals with Boston University; and coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the finals to beat MTU with freshman Bill Baker crashing the net to score one of the Gopher goals. Of course, the Minnesota vs Canada angle animated all three of the championship games with the Huskies’ couple of Minnesotans adding even more spice to this fabulous mid-70s rivalry.

I seem to remember McInnis' Tech teams were always the biggest team on ice. Everyone looked 6'3" and 230 lbs. Probably not that big, but seemed like it.

Good first win to respond after getting down after 2. Finish off the sweep tomorrow. Fun to see so many of the new faces on the scoresheet night 1
I thought it was a solid 1st game. I was not a the game so I can only go off the video feed. But I had a few observations: 1) I like the look of our top line. Zeimer has made strides and should be a force; Ludtke is a good player, and Mooney will be really good (he is not big but he is extremely skilled; slates like his cousin). 2) I thought goaltending was solid. 3) Our D was okay. Lots of new faces. Losing Gruba early hurt, a serious injury to him would really hurt that group. Nobody really stood out to me here. But I thought Luc M. was very good 4) Arena looked full for an opening game, and that's great. 5) I was surprised at some of the line combos (Javon Moore with Lamb?) We'll see how those combos all shake out. All in all... a good opening win, against a decent opponent. Hoping for the sweep tonight. It's good to have hockey back!

Mooney is good and will absolutely work some teams. Cooley has better acceleration and top end so five one five sometimes Mooney gets contained. Mooney will likely put up lots of PP points.

Forward unit will be good if everyone is healthy at some point. I still don't understand only carrying 14 .

D unit is rough and will be rough this year. If Gruba is out, ouch. McLaughlin made at least two brutal freshmen mistakes that directly resulted in goals. You do not have ONE healthy right handed D. That is a massive recruiting failure.

Airey still ain't it. Big rebounds galore. With that D, better hope Di Pasquo is good enough to win the job to hold down the fort against PSU/MSU/UM/UND.

Pahlsson face off stats started off bad again.

Didn't get to see the PK.

Biggest positives are Mooney/Pritchard and Ziemer/Lamb did what was needed from them so far.

Confirmed: both goalies are going to be a problem

Confirmed: Mooney is already the best hockey player on the team

Confirmed: D unit can't make a break out pass which kills the whole offense

This was overly optimistic.

With the injuries, I'll say 3-7 over the next 10 to start 4-8.

Mittelstadt and Thomas will be completely worn down by playoff time.

Nothing is confirmed after two games. My god you’re the worst.

I'm not feeling very optimistic about this D group. Mittlestadt is great, and defensively Thomas is very solid. Outside of those two, Gruba has been average at best and who knows how long he is out for. None of the others look like they belong. The next month could be rough, especially without Gruba. Forward depth is pretty good, especially once Moe and Townsend return, but we're gonna have to score 4-5 every game and that's a lot to ask.

Watch. Lame duck coach isn't going to be able to coach up players that just don't have the skill.
The lame duck coach has some pretty great recruits coming in the next couple of years. This year will be challenging, so I might suggest for your mental wellness you may just want to sit this year out. Although, I know you feel better when you can complain about the Gophers.

You would think after Bonin21 getting banned from GPL because of his constant complaining about the Gophers and posters on this board ripping on him for his constant complaining about the Gophers that he would finally get it that his attitude sucks. No program deserves a shitty fan like him.
