an interesting point from the pod
NIL go review of deals went into place on July 1 so monies/deals for this year really are not going to carry the same level of scrutiny. Will change next year where you have to review what they're actually doing. think in all honesty some of this is groups selling out right now before rules tighten further and further.
Agree that certain schools are going to shunt to certain sports. Think you are perhaps playing into a bit of the "drama" that the Golden Helmet collective is trying to portend with this. UND operates at near even in terms of revenue. They would now have to come up with all that revenue sharing money. The 21mil is the cap. They are not going to have the budget to just throw money at players. It increases options for scholarships and stuff, but unless the usual big donors fork over money, they're in the exact same boat unless they cut sports. Same concept at Bemidji, Mankato, SCSU, CC, etc.
Just allows for them to do more aggressive NIL support if the community will support it. They won't be coming up with this from the school. Exact same thing MN could do. This is actually why I'd say poo pooing small donors is unwise. Add into it if the golden collective can get the NHLers we've had to dump in and you can put together a more than sizeable chunk to compete. May be part of why we did quite well amongst MN kids early this year.
Same deal for scholarships you add. Have to balance with title IX. Many of these schools don't have additional women's sports. MSU and PSU have done well as they have hockey donors with MSU also having a premier coach. UM has a MASSIVE NIL fund comparatively. There's a reason UND and DU haven't been pulling players hand over fist
was nice to hear that the Golden Helmet collective seems to have more clout, which would be expected given they should have athletes with ties to all the hockey companies, NHL connections, etc. as well as numerous former NHLers who have gone on to bigger businesses who should be able to connect back. Hell of a lot more optimistic with this group comparatively given their focus, particularly given this is a group that's going to actually want to make this thing work. Maybe they'll actually make some shirts you like
For those that don't want to listen to the whole thing, tune in around the 53 min mark if you want to feel hyped about it and want to skip the other nitty gritty that has bonin down on the future
After listening to the GPL podcast about NIL, ya the U is fucked for hockey. Because the U is a hockey school but on paper will be a football/bball school and hockey won't even be able to pay the full 26 scholarships.
So schools like MSU/UM/PSU will rely on the rich donors.
Schools like UND/DU will push more revenue sharing to hockey.
Gophers don't have any money to compete and you see it in the recruiting.
