Gopher GM -NIL Contract Manager

Could this position be the second highest paid state employee?

That would be a dream job if there was one donor like Phil Knight at Oregon. It would be a hellish job with the current mix of UM "mega-donors".

as I read this, the GM is not just a fund-raiser. the GM will play a key role in deciding which player gets how much money. again, when (if) the House settlement kicks in, MN will be distributing roughly $22-million in revenue sharing to its athletes. the article refers to this job as "managing the salary cap."

having a GM make those decisions on who gets how much $$ helps insulate the coaches.

and make no mistake, there will be tough decisions to make. not just how much $$ is allocated to each sport, but dividing the money among players. How much $$ goes to the QB - how much to the WR - etc. hand out too much money to the skill positions, and you wind up with no money for the linemen.

I don't think it's over-exaggerating to say that this new position will be the most important in the athletic department - certainly more important than Coyle.

How many programs just elevated the bag man who's been doing this for 20 years?

Assuming the settlement isn’t delayed or derailed there are still no signals whatsoever on how the revenue would be distributed. This GM/cap manager would have to balance the wants and needs of the revenue sports coach demands (men’s football and basketball) with any Title IX issue, conference or school rules diverting funds to revenue neutral or negative programs (the rest), and balancing scholarships. Will schools have agency to compensate based on value, and gain a hypothetical edge that way. I suppose every organization needs a layer of fall guys.

Behind the scenes discussions have to be happening, but no word. All this before the Hausfield lawsuits, employment lawsuits.
