Probably not and it doesn’t really matter. What I think matters is do we have a shiny new toy compared to what we had under Mason or Kill? I say no in a watered down much easier Big Ten top to bottom but for the top two or three teams, we continue to tread water.

The gophers have had two teams in the fleck era that could compete with Ohio State.

They didn’t play them with one of the teams and they lost in the torn Achilles game the other.

Most years most teams can’t compete with Ohio state so you have to try to get them when you can.

As it is, unless the scheduling model changes the gophers will play Ohio State 5 more times before 2033

Scheduling has nothing to do with it. The Gophers might have had 2 teams that would have played better but compete for 4 quarters no way, not unless you caught OSU on a down year which is unlikely. Its the delusional thinking of "you have to try and get them when you can" that keeps people tuning in. After watching Gopher football for 40 plus years I'm resigned to the fact they'll never rise past being a mid tier Big 10 team.

The talent that the team puts on the field matters. The head coach at the end of the day recruits the talent. Yes, it matters who the head coach is when building a program.

When you lose to Bowling Green, kids don't want to play for your program. When you win, kids do.

It’s much less about recruiting players anymore, it’s more like hiring players. And our hiring budget pales in comparison to the helmet schools. And it looks like the disparity will just increase in the future, at least within the conference. The proposed Big Ten private capital deal is supposed to provide more money to schools with bigger brands.

I didn't expect them to win the game but to play as bad as they did was unexceptable. This many years into Flecks tenure and thats the best team he can put on the field. If a FG is the most your offense can put on the board something is wrong. They didn’t even look like they belonged in the same conference as OSU let alone the same field.
Plus anyone who watches football hopes this might be the year they put it together. Fleck himself has said this years team is one of the most talented and deepest he's had.

Bowling Green doesn’t matter. Money matters.
We cannot afford to pay the number of four and five star players the helmet schools can pay. We will always be at a disadvantage for that reason.

I read 3000 posts this offseason telling me revenue sharing with the players levels the playing field

Yeah because before the current NIL model of compensation the Gophers where doing so much better.

Not until the fans pay up in NIL money $35MM is their budget.

First, in the old model players were getting paid, it just wasn’t out in the public. Given not as much as is now..

Second, what does the old model have to do with the new model? Under the old model Ryan day was about to get fired, under the new model he is a National champion Coach. Point is he is a way better coach u def this new model.

So what does the old model have to do with the new model again?

Your correct, losses to Boiling Green mattered (under the old system), so do loss to Cal (under the new system). Those are on PJ.

Loss to OhSt this year, that’s on us, the fans.

Considering Day is 50-1 against unranked opponents, not many teams can complete from the conference.

Coyle said during pregame interview. tOSU makes more revenue off one home game than MN makes in 7.

Nobody has scored more than 9 points against Ohio State this season. They have allowed 2 TD through 5 games. Only scoring 3 is frustrating but this Ohio State defense is unreal.

Ohio State is the clear favorite to win the National Championship this year. There might be a few teams out there that can hang with them but there are not many.

For us to compete in a game with a team like that we need them to make some mistakes and they didn't. That goes for us and 95% of the other teams in college football. There are very few (might not be any) teams that can line it up and beat Ohio State straightup right now.
 

Have to get them in the right situation (Ex. early in a year or a major injury) or putting their defense on the field for 2/3s of the game through scheme. Gopher QBs never do anything with their legs to challenge a defense. At that point, we become pretty predictable.

The old model has nothing to do with the new model. My point was the end result is the same.

Im sorry but the fact that Minnesota who is in the same conference as OSU cant even score one TD is embarrassing and a telling sign of how far apart they are from OSU. The Gophers will never make up that difference and their stat line just confirms that.

We are who we are at this point...a middle-of-the-pack developmental program that fortunately resides in the B1G+ Conference, a conference that apparently is going to survive the changes that money continues to bring.

That we look around and see other similar-level (or lower) B1G+ programs do what we did in 2019 does make one wonder at times about what change in HC might bring. Indiana comes to mind...

One thing though that we should be grateful for...Minnesota is one of the 7 original Western Conference founding institutions. We are benefitting today from that decision made in 1896. It is unfortunate that we lost several decades of focus at the top on the value that revenue-producing sports brings to an institution. That has been righted thank goodness.

Last night sucked. Oregon will likely suck. On to Purdue.

So...you expected it to be like flipping a light switch?
 

In all levels of college football, there are a very small handful of perennial true contenders...like low single digits. There's another slightly larger handful of teams that have the resources to contend every few years. The teams in these top categories barely change.

Most of the rest in the Power 4 are fighting to get a top 10 or 15 team a few times a generation. This is the Gophers. Fleck is probably done with top 10 finishes.

That's college football. It is what it is. Know that and enjoy your Saturdays.
 

I asked this very question on the board maybe 6 or 7 years ago. Basically the same conclusions but different reasonings. Sadly nothing has seemed to change in all that time.

Yeah its sad, Im at the point where I think they need to just make a division with teams that include Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, ect. and let them just play each other.
I mean i didnt expect the Gophers to beat OSU but they did absolutely nothing against them and its downright embarrassing.
The talent gap between OSU and Minnesota is comparable to what we saw between Minnesota and that FCS team we beat 66-0 earlier this year.
