Giel belongs in there somewhere - played left halfback in Single Wing variation, which was essentially shotgun QB today, as triple threat - punting, running, passing, plus full time on defensive backfield, two-time All-American, closest Heisman voting in history to that point, AP Player of the Year, B10 Silver Football Trophy twice as most valuable player in B10.

Agree 100%. Giel is best back in Gopher history. If Smith wasn’t a somewhat fluke Heisman winner (he didn’t win the BIG MVP and was the 3rd leading rusher on his own team), Giel would get his just due.

I actually think the fact that he was an absolutely terrible athletic director really dampens people’s thoughts about his athletic career and exploits.
