And Gopher Football is a cult.

Per Souhan on espn1500

I'm happy with my decision to not listen.

I'm pretty happy with my fanatic tendencies. We've got good reason to be optimistic about our team.

But according to Souhan and many of the other media members in town, nobody cares about Gopher football.

If Gopher football is a cult, I'd like to see what he thinks of other college football fandoms. In a lot of other towns, he might have already been gone well before this incident. Negative information is one thing, but continual cheap shots don't endear you to fans anywhere.

But what he doesn't realize is that what he stepped in is a lot bigger than just offending some Gopher fans, and doubling down isn't going to make it go away, and neither will pseudo-apologies.

Can someone think his opinions are ill-informed, overreactive, and cynical, with a sophomoric writing style without being offended? I don't think most Gopher fans are offended. They're responding to a cheapshot by a hack with a public form.

Yes, Jim. Shame on me for being upset that a columnist (who has a history of snark and derisive tone in his articles directed towards the U) showed terrible judgment in how he framed a serious question using snide remarks and cheapshots to make his point. How dare I.

And shame on me again, for supporting the U by purchasing football season tickets year after year because I love my alma mater and enjoy football.

And shame on me for giving back to my alma mater in the form of annual donations and attendance to sporting events because I am thankful for the education and career the U has helped me obtain.

And how dare I participate in a cult-like activity like Gopherhole, where I can share my opinions and find common ground with other Gopher fans.

I'm relieved and so glad there are concerned, thoughtful men out there like Jim Souhan, who can tell me how I fit into the grand fabric of sports fandom.

I wasn't offended in the least. I have long given-up on Souhan being anything but a poor writer. He can't offend me.

When Souhan was on with Zulgad and Dubay today Zulgad said that you can tell how small the Gopher football fanbase is because if this were the Vikings they could never control the minds of that many fans. And that the U is controlling our minds and we don't think for ourselves, we're just a cult. Listening to Souhan with Judd and Jeff today was comical, they still don't get what people are upset about. And then they have the nerve to claim that their opinion on this issue is the exact same as Jerry Kill's, based on some quote Kill made in August with Joe Christianson.

If they don't get it now, they never will.

Souhan sure comes off as having a narcissistic personality.
He just doesn't get it. The whole Town including three TV stations has shown their disgust towards his actions, but he continues to take shots.
In his mind, he's right and everyone else is wrong.

Just when it seems that there "might" be an opportunity to climb out of the hole, he gets a shovel & digs even deeper.....

He likes the attention. He actually likes the negative attention. We're all giving him what he wants. He just wants to be talked about so he can get more online dates.

Patrick occasionally writes a feel good piece about a player for the Twins, Gophers, and maybe the Vikings. He also will write some decent pieces about town ball and history.
Souhan has not had that in him and most of his writing is lazy and cheap. He may have lost his mojo at some point or maybe he never had it. He continues to use Gopher football as an easy way to get a jab in or a laugh out of his "fans", but he doesn't realize that in doing so he alienates most of the community.

baBAM! and we have a winner for post of the year.

I share your sentiments exactly. It's our frickin alma matter. How dare you call it a cult. I paid dam good money for my education and i am damn proud to call myself an alum. GO GOPHERS!

There is a reason why I listen to KFAN.

Notice how fans and organizations and everything are upset with Jim Souhan. Yet they are not even close to as upset with Phil Mackey and Greg Doyle. Why you may ask? Because the latter mentioned wrote respectful, questioning articles that, although many disagreed with, didn't mock or ridicule anyone.

Souhan crossed a line, that's why people are up in arms. Not because his opinion is necessarily different, but when you describe the situation the way he did - yeah, people won't be happy.

zulgad's comment shows just how little he understands college football and really college sports in general. the gopher football fanbase is not small. there are many of us out there and all over the country. he and souhan are so wrong on this point. and here is why.

the reason you have so many gopher fans, and really a large portion of the general public, marching in the same direction on an issue is because a large percentage of us have an actual personal affinity with the university. whether it be ourselves/family/friends who attended the U of M (or another said school if this was happening somewhere else) or through something else on a more deeply personal level. it is not because you want to create a straw man argument and thus claim a college team's fan base must be small and therefore is somehow being controlled because of your false perception of its apparent size. zulgad's argument is ridiculous, clueless, ill-informed, and makes no sense.

college fans are by and large more intelligent and have far greater affinity/loyalty than their pro sport rube counterparts. i am quite confident that if a study were done it would prove the intelligence point! ;) we live and die with our college programs much more than i think pro rubes do. and i would also suggest that the college sport fan's greater overall intelligence (compared to the subset of the public that is strictly a pro sports fan) makes them far less susceptible to simply being lead blindly by a "pied piper" as zulgad is stupidly suggesting.

with pro sports like the vikings, twins, wolves, wild a large percentage of their "fans" truly are nothing more than unaffiliated rubes with no personal or family affinity to said team. it is just something for them to do in their free time and an excuse to go get sloppy drunk for a few hours at a game or at a bar.

zulgad/souhan: you truly do not understand college sports or the college sports fan. you simply don't. and because you don't, you would rather just try to insult and deride us in a lame, poorly thought out, attempt to discredit the appropriate public backlash that you are rightly receiving.

Right guys. Because you need to be brainwashed and in a cult to treat a fellow human being with respect and to be offended when someone does otherwise.

I happened to catch the tail end of his rant when I was driving today and was wondering who the a**hat was and lo and behold it was Soupcan. If I ever read anything or listen to anything of his it will be too soon. He basically said he thought Kill was doing a good job here and would lead the team to success and immediately after that said gopher fans are gullible to believe Kill is a good coach and Kill would be unable to lead the team because of his medical condition. Which is it soupcan? Jezus what a pos. I propose a new forum rule that if anyone posts any of his articles here they get a temporary ban. If they do it again a permanent ban. There is just no reasoning with this moron at all. His is nothing but a pos. I understand some may be opposed to this and so be it so I will refuse to read or listen to anything of his again apology or not.

Souhan seems not to enjoy his job, and resents that he has to cover things he doesn't care about. If he doesn't like covering the Gophers, he can get a different job, covering the University of Minnesota... Crookston, that is.

No one's taken any marching orders from the U, this is purely grassroots. If he thinks he's getting pushback from this, there are a lot of other schools where this would look like a group hug by comparison.

Hey, watch it buddy!!!!

I'm an alumnus of the U. I enjoy college football. I enjoy GH as a diversion. Fanaticism? Really?

Guess everybody else that was offended, including David Axelrod and the state of Minnesota's epilepsy foundation, have just been waiting for the opportunity to join this Gopher football cult.

If there was ever any doubt about how much of a jerk Souhan is, this should just about seal it.
