Gopher fan post that perfectly sums up the Tubby Smith situation

What does their salary have to do with anything? Our wins are not divided by the coach's salary. The point is that it was reasonable that people became utterly convinced that Brewster could not win here long before he was fired. It was painfully obvious. For anyone to sit here and say right now that they're convinced Tubby Smith cannot win at the B1G level is to ignore 15 + years of him doing exactly that.
This determination will be made after next year, if we don't make the Tourny one could assume that he can no longer compete at a BCS/B1G level. AD's fire coaches who were once great because they believe in the future they can no longer achieve what was once the norm for that coach.

Fair enough. It will at the least be time to move on, regardless what the reason is.

Well if Tubby doesn't end up getting it done, I think it will speak volumes to the culture of revenue sports at the U. It's rare for the U to have a coach like Tubby fall into our laps, I mean after all how many times has this University hired a coach with a national title in a revenue sport. If a national title winning coach can't get it done here, maybe it's time to reevaluate the people in charge. Can't win if the board won't committ the resources. As for Molinari and Monson it's easier to win at Midmajors because ahletics is on a smaller budget. At the U, we give our coaches midmajor type facilities (minus the Bank) no practice facility and an out of date football facility and we tell our coaches to go beat the best of the B1G, were not competing with teh Dakotas and Sant Barbara's like Monson and Molinari are

I'm neither a detractor or a proponent of Tubby but I feel I do sense what he's trying to do with the program. He's old school, good or bad that's what he is. Being old school, he's not backing away from the big picture for the program. If that means losing a player or two he'll do that and feels in the long run the team will be better for it chemistrywise and even developmentally. I totally agree with sentiment of wanting to see individual and team improvement as an indication of coaching ability and we were seeing that I believe going back to the year we made it to the finals of Big 10 tourney. The last couple of years he's been scrambling to compete with a fair share of injuries and transfers while still trying to stay true to his "big picture". I've coached bball and certainly don't agree with all he's done but my belief on what he's trying to do does make it easier.

Totally agree and that is why the Minnesota AD and the Long Beach State AD should both be looking for new coaches. Each has a coach that hasn't won an NCAA tournament game in half a decade. That is the only thing that matters. This Chief gets it. And only one of those two has won an NIT game. For shame Monson. I never thought I'd agree with Burnee on the hoops board but we finally do.

Not the man - glad to see you recognize The Beach as being on par with Minnesota, a BIG 10 school. Quite a feat, Big West to Big 10!!

That is what Monson can do.

Tubbster still cant win a ncaa game. MAybe next year?

Good grief. Do you realize he got run out of his last job? Fall in our lap? Give me a break.

I have never seen so many excuses for failure in my life. Optimistic? We finished 9th in conference and our recruiting class is 9th. Finally, I don't care what the coaches name is. If he isn't doing the job, I want him gone. If we can't win without new facilities, why pat a guy $2 Million to fail. We can fail for a lot cheaper than that.

Optimism doesn't have to based on things like recruiting. We lose 1 or 2 players, and neither of which had significant roles in recent success. We aer young team that is going to be a lot more experienced next year. That is what people are looking at for their optimism. Buggs and Ellenson don't even have to play a role on the team next year if we don't lose any players.

You can't win here. Read above. It's not Tubby's fault.
