Good season, excited for the future of the program

I love how people throw out completely baseless (and unknowable) conjecture and want everyone else to accept it as fact.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

One of the reasons Tubby got fired is that he had no chance to land any of the big 3. It was known within the program, and even being leaked outside the program last spring. There is little chance - probably no chance - Teague pulls the trigger on Tubby if he's about to land a top-25 national player that he had been recruiting for years. Privately, the camps for all 3 guys were making it known they weren't coming to Tubby.

So the athletic department paid 2.5 million dollars for Smith to go away because Reid Travis' mom and Tyus Jones' nephew and Rashad Vaughn's mentor told them the recruits wouldn't play for Tubby? That's ridiculous. The program is bigger than any three local recruits. Are people making a mad rush to cancel their season tickets because Tyus Jones isn't our point guard next year?

Back on topic....I'm still excited for the future, but I can't say that I wasn't somewhat disappointed in the way that the season ended. We didn't show dramatic improvement in the last half of the big ten season like Wisconsin/Nebraska/Illinois/couple others.

See station 19's post. Spot on to what happened the second half of the B1G season.

Exactly how I feel. Well said.

I feel like Buggs could be a huge determining factor for me with Pitino. He has the body, length, athletism, and shooting touch to be a great stretch 4. He just needs strength, seasoning, and experience. He has that high ceiling and could be a key to trapping and pressing. I know its up to Buggs, but I would love to see a MO type transformation in the weight room for him. I am not saying he needs to be 230, but I would take a muscular 210 for sure!

add quickness, he is a huge liability on the defensive end guarding off the bounce, if he wants to play 3 that's his biggest opportunity and the main reason he didn't get minutes in the Big 10 tournament.

This is the 3rd time I've said it, but our #1 priority for next season has to be on ball defense to eliminate all of the help. If we can get a couple guys that can speed guards up and make them uncomfortable without leaving a wing open for a wide open three we are a completely different team. Same goes for on ball defense in the post and trusting someone other than EE can hold a guy in check. NO help, no kick-out opportunities.

I just don't understand why people get so pumped up about players like Buggs, McNeil and even Wally. Wally is gone. Buggs and McNeil are role players at best.

McNeil will be a player, Buggs will not. Wally, well...

Not saying his ceiling is a 20 point scorer, but I see him being a core player as an upperclassmen. Someone who plays 25+ minutes, scores 10 ppg, and a critical part of our defense.

I say his ceiling is #8-10 in the rotation of a good team.

I agree. I like that Buggs and McNeil are our sophomore class to be, but if either starts it means recruiting didn't go well. I also don't believe either of our junior class to be of King and Morris will be B1G average at the beginning of the season. Piper is a good pick up for the future, but I can't see him providing a lot of help next season, not unlike Mason. Tough time of the year, but we do need immediate help to go dancing next season IMO. The B1G is never bad, but it was down this season. Seldom does that happen two years in a row.

The guys who really want to win here- Teague and Ellis - knew where Tubby stood on recruiting, especially with the Big 3. If they thought for one minute that Tubby had the best chance to get any of them do you think they would have paid him to leave? Get real. Fact of the matter was that Tubby was about to have his worst year here with only Foster and Ellis coming in (imagine this team without Mathieu and with a 300# Mo). The future wasn't bright and the charm of having the HOF coach had worn off. You are right about this though- it's not just the coach, we need to get big time around here and I think Teague will get it done with Pitino-and having a solid football team will help a ton with revenue.

It happens all the time. Target loses money becasue of the security breach and what happens, CTO gets fired. Board of directors should have fired the CEO 1st before they got to CTO. Purdue hired a president whose goal was to raise 1 Billion $. He actually raised 1.3 Billion. Presidents and AD are hired to raise money. If this university wants to go to the next level in sports, they should bring in someone who is good at fundraising. You can fire as many coaches as you want. When the right tools are not given, nobody can succeed. Tubby just recruited 6 players at TT. Two weekends ago, 3 players visited the university. All 3 of them met with the University president and all people incharge. All 3 commited within a week. They also picked up the best QB in the nation for their football team. Marketing is something that MN is missing. In a few years, Richard will leave. If he gets a few winning seasons, he will land a great job. If he doesn't, he will make a latteral move and find another program. Do you know what he will say, Tubby Smith couldn't win there, how did you expect me to win? I hope that I am wrong but as I said before, only time will tell. By the way, I am not saying that MN president should be fired. Just those incharge of marketing.

Spoken like a true Minnesota Gopher fan in the "Good season, excited for the future of the program" thread.

Hahaha Couldn't have said it any better. Minnesota Fans will almost always be like this...They would rather look 3+ years in the future and start complaining about that instead of focusing on the season at hand or even the next season. smh Minnesotans...

Good lord, is it fundraising or marketing? The quarterback that committed didn't mention either....Kingsbury as coach, style of offense and small town feel were his reasons.

Now you are really getting carried away. You are going with the reasons the recruit gives? What does he know :)

Tubby definitely should not be the topic of this board. 2 of those JC commits were spoon fed to him by an x member of his staff. He didn't have to recruit to hard, I can guarantee that.

That said, I'm not one of the Tubby bashers or supporters on this board. I just don't know that it would be fair to claim that he went out and recruited these kids hard as a proof of him getting 3 recruits to commit in a week.

I just said that based on what I have read. True or not, I have no idea. It actually surprized some of the fans out there since Tubby has a bad reputation for a recruiter. I have read that he has a good team.

Sorry, I mean good marketing will translate into good fundraising.
