Good game despite Andre and Austin Hollins

Syracuse is a top 10 team in the country, and I'm not saying that because they're ranked in the top 10, I'm saying that because they really are legit top 10. This was a hell of a game by the Gophers. It's not a moral victory, because those are stupid, but it opened my eyes and raised my hopes quite a bit.

If we had this Varidel guy from Chaminade, we win in a cakewalk. Dude put up 31 points in the first half against Baylor.

+1 Some people are acting like we lost to a school with about four names including a "Tech" and a direction. Syracuse has highly recruited players, have their system down, they also play hard, and, oh, they have a coach who has been very successful for about 30 years. The Gophers played hard which should give fans hope, but they're not going to be favorites in very many conference games. This game was a preview of what most BIG games are going to be like. The Gophers are going to have to battle like hell to even get a draw up front. Andre is going to be a marked man. People in foul trouble are going to cost them. Pretty sure guys like Izzo and Matta are going to know how to handle the press these Gophers can throw at them.

At the same time, it's going to be fun. The system is entertaining, they're going to continue to play hard, and they have a coach who seems to have the potential of taking this program to a higher level.

We were down by two with the ball with a minute and 40 seconds to go when the long pass to King went out of bounds. Playing short handed against a very good team wasn't bad. No moral victories but this told me more about this team than many of our previous victories.

Also, yes I realize we only missed 1 free throw all game. Great game from the line helped keep us in it, though Cuse shot well also. BUT it was a very unfortunate and uncharacteristic miss. Andre (95% foul shooter) on the line for a 1 and 1 with 6 seconds left in the half and us down one. Chance for us to go into halftime with the lead. But he MISSES the front end, Cuse goes down and gets Eliason's 2nd foul with 1 second left, and makes 2 shots for a 3 point halftime lead.

That was probably the sequence of the game.

What a pathetic second half from our supposed leaders. Gritty effort from Malik, Elliot, and Joey. Gonna have to make a lot of jump-shots this year to stay in games. We are gonna get killed against the elite teams inside.

Come on mods. This is a post started by a guy that did not post from the end of the Nebraska game until the loss to wiskey. And this is his first day posting this season on the BBall side of the board. What do you need to identify a troll? Is there a rule he/she needs to break?

Very happy with today I don't know How Any gopher basketball fan wouldn't be it's a long season with alot to look forward to . This just shows How competitive we will be come B1G ten play!

The Gophers played well, but they clearly lacked a back up big man, and they had too many turnovers. Walker should help, but this game made it clear that we don't have a true starting PF. Oto, while improved, is not a starter. He's a bench guy. So is King. Give us two of these three: less turnovers, a solid starting PF, and Mo Walker, and we win the game. One of those three would've made it extremely close.

If we continue to play this hard tonight, while improving along the way, we'll be a good team. This team could go to the tournament if Walker is a player.

Is Syracuse overrated or was it us? We have reason for optimism if we can be competitive like tonight. Syracuse will get destroyed by good guard play. Was not impressed with Syracuse.

I was amazed by the difference in size and athleticism between Syracuse and the Gophers. Pitino played a 7-man rotation because he had no other choice. Mav, Wally, Buggs would have gotten manhandled in this game. Syracuse is rated just fine, and we played up to the competition, despite the silly premise of this whole thread. EVERY shot was contested by Syracuse. Malik hit his threes from way outside the arc, and Dre had trouble getting his shot off against bigger guards. Austin had trouble getting anything going against "small" forward wing defenders who averaged 6'8" or 6'9". Big deal. We are what we are: Undersized at most positions to most decent teams. As a jump shooter, that means you will struggle to get your shot off sometimes. Everyone take er easy.

Good post.

How can this thread be three pages? Surely everybody in the world has blocked gopherinpain by now. I haven't read the post, obviously, but I imagine he's predicting a 20-loss season on account of the fact that we lost a game or something. I'm impressed he waited until after the game was over.
