KFAN surprised me — twice! — recently by putting out some content out on the airwaves that I actually found interesting.

ONE: Barreiro asked Glen Mason (in typical Barreiro fashion) about Fleck's buyout. Mason's answer was concise and unambiguous. It made me nod my head in agreement. I wish Mason was on the radio more often.

TWO: Dan (the Common Man) Cole was reminiscing about the early days at the station, when he was tasked with taking phone calls after Viking games, all alone. His observations about the calls he received after a Viking loss were funny and sad at the same time, and reminded me of exactly why I avoid Gopher Hole like the plague after a Minnesota loss.

Two brief moments in a vast sea of KFAN content, but two that were well worth listening to.
 

Any insight regarding which days these were? I live out of the market not, but listen to both via podcast quite frequently

Well, let's see... the Mason stuff was on Bumper to Bumper, and it would have been... Wednesday? I guess I assumed Dan has Mason on the show on the same day every week, but maybe not.

To summarize Mason: He was mystified as to why people would be thinking about buying out Fleck's contract. He then recalled being fired by the U immediately after taking the Gophers to a bowl game. He told of listening to Tim Brewster's presser after Brewster took the Gopher job. Mason said he actually laughed out loud when Brew started talking about Rose Bowls and B1G Championships.

He also said that the Gopher offensive line was unable to open holes or protect the QB in the second half vs. Iowa, and pointed out that was the factor that decided the game.

He was asked if Minnesota had any chance against Michigan. He said, yes, they have a chance if the offensive line can perform at a high level. Told how he had watched the Michigan-USC game, and that Michigan had dominated the USC offensive line.

The Common Man content was as follows: In the early KFAN days, Dan had to sit in an empty room, by himself, and field calls from angry, drunken, emotional, irrational Viking fans after any and all Vikings games. His recollections regarding the calls he fielded reminded me of Gopher Hole after a loss. Fans are the same everywhere and regardless of team, I suppose.

When his bosses found out how much Common hated doing the post game call-in show, they took him off of that duty.

Fleck was a guest during Paul Allen's show. they were discussing the Iowa game. PA noted that Iowa's punter is from Australia, and he asked Fleck if Fleck had ever thought about trying to get a punter from Australia.

according to the report, there was a long pause, and then Fleck informed PA that the Gophers' punter is from Australia.

Of course he would laugh.

Mason never aspired to win a B10 championship, he was more than happy just coasting along as a middling team, and the fans better be damn happy that may reach a bowl game with a probable loss.

That was winning in the Mason mindset.

Totally disagree with you It was Mason who won the support of the State Legislators to get the approval and support for bonding needed to
build the on campus stadium.

It did also help that the local NFL ownership was turning the screws tighter on the legislature for the state to build the nfl mafia machine a new palace for the local franchise. However, in order to keep the pro team in downtown Minneapolis, there had to be a stadium somewhere in the state for the nfl team to play. Between the lobbying Mason had done to get a Gopher on campus stadium and threats and heat put on the legislature by the franchise owner and the nfl, approval was was given for bonding to build the Gopher stadium, in large part specifically so the local pro team. could play in the on campus stadium while their new stadium could be built.

I have watched posters on this board always talk trash about a coach once he is no longer a coach here. Some of you still talk trash about Mason and gush about the new wonder boy coach brewster. Then, when he was gone the boosters killed Coach Kills name. Tracy won 9 games and he became known here as the worst of the worst.

And now, some of the posters here(too many of them) openly want Coach Fleck’s scalp. I guess this is the minnesota Gopher Football fans’ signature move

Nothing that you wrote addresses his lazy coaching and lazy recruiting.

That’s why I was ready for him to be gone.

His reaction after the TTech bowl game was an embarrassment.

Now all the coaches who have followed him at least got out of the damn dome, have had the new on campus stadium to do their lazy recruiting and lazy coaching in and it seems as though i’ve been reading fan reaction of how horribly they think the current coach reacts to losses when he lets games get away. So many fans this very season say they are suffering severe embarrassment.

Still, i have to laugh at the fans who want to fire Fleck so badly. Personally I’m pleased that all those big-time boosters here at Minnesota would have to come up with 22plus million to buy PJ out.

Damn, no wonder Mase laughed out loud on danny b’s show! ;0)

Sorry to be so late to the party, it's been a busy weekend and I am just catching up on the board. Can confirm SON's report. In a blatant effort to save face, PA then pretended to have meant tough, rugby-type players and wondered if Fleck had ever thought about trying to find someone like that rather than just specialists. PJ then referenced Daniel Faalele and, after an awkward pause, PA moved on.

This is the only thing I think that coach Mason didn't fully understand. Fans don't want to hear that the program is doomed to be mediocre. Though clearly not up to the task, Brewster raised expectations.
