Godspeed to Shannon Brooks

So that's from 2019.

The go fund me is recent.

Did something happen?

From the gofundme:
My name is Shannon Brooks. I graduated from the university of Minnesota and was a Student-Athlete. I have personally struggled with depression and suicide and have decided to use my story and platform to help others around the world. I have created an organization called Suicide Survivor. The mission statement for my organization is “saving one life at a time”. Everybody has a story that holds a lot more power then they think or know. We are NEVER alone. There are so many people in the world that struggles with the same things that I struggle with and I want them to know they are never alone and they MATTER. Their story matters! I created a platform on Instagram for my organization to allow people to share their stories of strength to the world. You never know how your story can help change or even maybe save a life. I will make hoodies, shirts, sweats, bracelets and plenty of more items to help spread the awareness around the world. I have many other amazing ideas and plans to help spread the awareness around these important causes. I love you all so much and I’m excited about helping impact the world. Always remember you are never alone GOD bless.

So it looks like he potentially attempted suicide back in Dec 2019, but survived, and is now creating an organization to work to help prevent people from decided to attempt suicide.

I remember that he didn't participate in the bowl game vs Auburn and at the time folks were surprised/confused, but now we know why.

I'm surprised we never heard anything?? But I guess it's a very personal thing and not something that people want to share without permission.

Any chance it was simply a typo and was supposed to say Dec 2020? Probably not.

Glad he is in a better place now, and looking to help people!!

Well that totally changes the context of the thread. Wonder if GL didn't catch the date or something to realize that the suicide attempt was not recent. Sounds like he is trying to do something great to help others with similar issues.

The Gophers to really take care of their athletes with the counseling aspects. This pandemic must exacerbated the need.

I'm speechless. God Bless you Shannon Brooks.

Whoa. Didn't know any of that. Get well and spread your words, Shannon.

Tough read. Glad he is OK as well and is taking about as positive spin as he can from his experience to help others. Don't know him as a person but definitely enjoyed watching him on the field. Hope he does very well with this direction.

My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to Shannon. I will always remember cheering him on as he became a great Gopher player. And will now cheer him on as he helps those who are lost find their way to a life they want to live for.

Props to Shannon for speaking out and using his platform and experiences to make a positive impact. It takes a real man to admit something like this. Really proud he was a Gopher.

Wonder if the Gophers had extra incentive to play harder against Auburn in support of Brooks?

I never knew this. Pretty heartbreaking but I'm glad he was able to get to the place he is now and hopefully it's a good one for him going forward.

Nope, I caught the date. Healing isn't just physical. Wishing him well on his entire healing journey, this post and these images were heartbreaking. No one should ever go through something like this.

He went public with what happened to him to raise awareness and help others. Beyond brave.

From what I can tell from the description he has about his organization, one of the things they want to tackle is make sure folks know it's okay to reach out if you are struggling. The U could have all the counseling in the world and it would do nothing if no one chose to go. Sometimes taking that 1st step is the hardest of them all, and it's good that is one of the focuses of the organization.

I’m so sorry to hear Shannon has gone through this but am so thankful he is recovering. Prayers for his continued healing.

First post on the instagram page has a timeline including his injuries and losing his mother. Says "hit by train" for 2019.

Wonder if that is figurative, or if he literally tried to step in front of the light rail. He certainly got the crud knocked out of him in the pics.

Miracle he is alive, then.

Sad to read he was going through this struggle that almost cost him his life. Looks like he is trying to make something positive come out of his experience. This is such an important topic and it shows how hidden the struggle can be for those individuals. Admire him for his bravery.

Absolutely. It takes courage and bravery to admit you need help and to seek it out, and another level to essentially go completely public with your story to help others fighting similar battles.

Shannon answers all your questions on the podcast today. He. Was. Amazing.
