As I was reviewing and typing Jerry Kill's comments for this week's summary, Glen Mason was interviewed by Dave and Sid. His comments were very positive about the Gophers, especially the improvement in the offensive line. He was also complimentary about Gray's play. He also complimented the coaching of Matt Limegrover and Tracy Claeys. He said the team has shown great improvement as the season has progressed.

Sorry I don't have any direct quotes, as I was focused on the writing of the summary.

Go Gophers!!

Mason did a nice job as the BTN color guy on the game, too. I was checking the other day and he developed eight All-Americans in ten years here after there were none from 1971-97. I miss that - hope we can have some again in a few years...

I thought he did a nice job on the broadcast yesterday as well.

Yes, Mason has finally found his calling. Happy for him. It sure wasn't coaching and winning important games at the U!

Glen Mason won Coach of the Year in 3 different conferences during his career. How good are you at your career, crazed fan?

It seems to me, that Glen is inderectly lobbying for the ad job.... He is making himself so avail to media in mn, saying how much he loved it here, how he feels like he has work to do here still ect ect... even lou nanne is all about him... it PAINS me to say it, but i hnetly think he is going to get that job when it opens.... ughhhh

Why does it pain you to say it?

It seems to me that after a few years, Glen Mason realizes that he really loved the University of Minnesota. He is currently the most positive media person about Gopher football, and he rarely utters a negative word about the University. I know he was snark and not adored by most MN hs coaches when he was coach, but he seems to be much more personable and happy now.

because i really feel he is NOT the guy for the job. I am all for an ex coach to take over that position, i however want someone with better credentials.... someone like Fulmer ( for example)... who that person is... i dont know... i just have 0 faith in Mase as the AD..

It would be pretty strange to hire your former football coach who was fired by the retiring AD to replace said AD. Wait, no, not strange, downright bizarre. I highly doubt it happens.

That said, Mason might do a better job raising money for high priority items like the bball practice facility and baseball stadium.

I think Mason would be a good AD. He has program-building experience. A solid OSU national championship pedigree. CoY honors. U experience. Financial experience. He would be football-first. Inside access to the upper midwest good ole boy network. A lot of Minnesotans hate him but let's face it, they would hate anyone who could fill the position. I can think of worse candidates.

I can't say whether or not he'd be a good AD, but it was his relationship with TCF's head guy that got the finances needed for TheBank to be built. I'd think those types of relationships would be a bonus if he were the new AD.

Glen Mason is the Senior Vice President of Business Development for Marquette Asset Management. So he does have financial experience.

You guys are all nuts if you think Mason is going to take a huge pay cut from his cushy corporate and Big 10 announcing jobs to work seven days a week at a thankless job that comes with intense fan and media scrutiny. And he really handled that scrutiny well when he was the Gopher's coach, didn't he?

My impression as well. I'm not trying to start a spat, but Mason (along with Denny Green in my estimation) were the two coaches who came to Minnesota in my lifetime who could have had the entire public eating out of their hands and lobbying to build statues of them in their town squares had they just been a bit less bristly. Winning on the field is the first order of business, but in the modern sports market, it takes more than that (unless you're totally cleaning up on the field).

alot of good responses here, did anyone listen to bump on wed (i believe) and lou nanne was on just talking up glen and glens "unfinished buisness" here... maybe its bump just pushing some of his own ajenda... then as this thread started out Mase was on with Sid... Mase still loves mn... i dunno just seems like someone is getting alot of ducks in a row...

or maybe its just me....

No it is not you. It will be The Univeristy of Minnesota's President Erik Kaler who will be making the decision. But if you want to influence him just drop him a note and tell him that you are close personal friend of wren. That should put you in good standings with the new president.:)

I think Kaler will start with a clean slate, but what do I know?

I have no clue how Mason would do as an AD but I do know this, he would be great for the revenue sports because he would not be nearly as concerned with being PC or stepping on toes as his old boss was. It would be huge for the football program to have someone like Mason in charge. I would think that EK is going to want to see some major changes in how the athletic department is structured so whoever he hires is probably going to come in wielding a lot of power. Should be very interesting to watch.

hey now... that one hurts....

Where is Crazy Joe Davola when we need some insider info?

I like Mas a a commentator and I like that he does Gopher games. You can still tell that he cares about the program.

No...that does not mean that he has financial experience whatsoever. From their own website: "Glen is Senior Vice President of Business Development for Marquette Asset Management. He is responsible for developing and managing client relationships." I would bet that he would be totally flummoxed if he had to sit in front of a Bloomberg terminal or a P/L statement.

His job at Marquette and BTN are perfect for him. He can do both of them part-time without building up much of a sweat.

If Kaeler did want to keep the search somewhat local, I do know that Phil Esten, former Associate Athletic Director at the U of M before taking the position of CEO of the U of M Alumni Association, has always been extremely interested in a Athletic Director job somewhere in college. He was the Associate AD that was in charge of the entire TCF Bank Stadium project and in his current position I'm sure has been establishing relationships with the majority of alumni from the U. Whether or not Kaeler would want to hire someone who was formerly under Maturi though, I don't know.

As for Mason becoming AD, that would be one of the most bizarre hirings I think any college has ever seen. It'd be one thing if he left of his own accord, but how do you justify hiring someone who was fired from the U of M before?

I apologize

Sorry about that. Somebody has to be wren's friend.

You losers, lightweights, mobbers, bashers, and freak-jobs should be so lucky as to call wren/THE walrus your close, personal friend...

I'm really not impressed with you or your types killjoy/stuck_in_scony....and, by the way, anyone stuck in "scony" who doesn't have the hair to get themselves out of that hell-hole isn't much of a dude/dudette (which ever your case may be...)

That's what you get for trying to take pot-shots at people....

Some of you people are just really jerks...

You have so eloquently made my point why Erik Kaler would be so impressed by somebody who has you as a friend. I suspect we will hear soon an announcement from Kaler that you have been appointed the new chair of the department of rhetoric; no make that the department of babble.
