glasgow and bjorklund

It is all hypothetical. He could get hurt at Toledo. He may get there and they decide to redshirt him. He could play right away in fall 2012 at minnesota. If he played in fall 2012 at Minnesota he'd only get 4.

The chance to play right away is just one of many reasons he might pick Toledo over Minnesota. Others include talking to toledo for over a year and only being recruited by minnesota for 2 months. Familiarity with the coaching staff. Wanting to move "away" for college.
I'm simply pointing out that it's not nearly a no brainer.

You're talking in circles. If it comes down to "5 years to play 4" at both places, free ride of course, who on earth in their right mind chooses Toledo over Minnesota? It really is a no-brainer. And by that, I mean that Joe has no brains if he picks Toledo over Minnesota's grayshirt offer.

Why would he be in limbo? He just starts school in January. Kill wants to be starting all 4th and 5th year guys anyway. No harm to him at all.

You obviously don't remember being 18. All my friends left for college a month before I did and I felt left behind. I of course attend the U before the switched to semesters. It was tough hanging around town that extra month I did however take over my best friend's lawn mowing job and made a ton of extra cash. Imagine what it will be like not to start until Spring semester when all the guys in your recruiting class will have been taking classes since June? He'll miss all that bonding time with his teammates.

Not even close to a no brainer.

Minnesota: tells him not to show up till
January
Only has recruited him for 2 months
Just got a new coach, Does Joe like the new staff?
Close to home, does Joe like this?
Better degree for the most part
Big ten
Toledo: recruited him for 12 months
Wants him to come in in august and compete for time ( though he could end up redshirting anyways)
Joe loves the coaching staff
Gets a degree
Far away, does he like this?

I'm not the one who brought it up bozo. Somebody was arguing that He'd get 5.5 years of free school at the u. I was refuting this.

The way I read "longer scholarship" that is what I interpreted it as. Apparently I misread. In any case there is no longer scholarship at one place or the other. Both places would have 4 years to play 5.
At no point did I say he didn't want to redshirt at Toledo. He likes the opportunity to come in and compete for time in august. He still could redshirt if he doesn't get time. He doesn't like the fact that Minnesota doesn't want him to come in august. He doesn't like the implied redshirt that a grayshirt brings, with little chance to compete for early time.

He loves football. A grayshirt is a full year without real football. He'd get spring ball, but wouldn't get to practice from dec 2010 till spring ball 2012. A redshirt after a grayshirt would mean no games till 2013. If you are a d 1 caliber player, the idea of no games from thanksgiving 2010 to the last week in September 2013 probably isn't appealing to you.

It's quite simple, really. The one and only advantage Toledo has is early playing time. All this nonsense about "showing me the love" and other such similar BS is just white noise (and I don't just mean Bjorklund specifically, I mean any recruit who goes that route). If the coaches are promising him a chance to start right away, I can understand why he'd go there. If he is planning to redshirt, he really is a complete and utter moron if he chooses Toledo over Minnesota. And if I knew him, I'd tell him that to his face.

Maybe to you it's white noise. But to an 18 year old kid signing his future away....signing with a coach who you've been talking to for 13+ month may be more appealing than waiting 5
Months after everyone else goes to school to play for a guy who just started talking to you 6 weeks ago. For you to suggest that every single player who turns down a bcs offer to go to a non bcs school does so only to get playing time is laughable.

If he wanted to start right away and Coach Kill likes him why would he not Prefer walk on like Heifort?

It defeats the purpose of offering him the grey shirt. They want him as part of the class of 2012 since we already have enough linemen for 2011.

I doubt he would start right away no matter where he would go. I would definitely like to see him accept Kill's offer; i think he has a lot of upside and would benefit from a greyshirt year.

That is great news. I assume it is the gray shirt deal but I wonder if there was any chance the U coaches just said to themselves "lets just go ahead and offer this kid".

The grayshirt deal would be perfect for the U to spread around some of their talented OL coming in, but either way, welcome aboard Joe!

Like I said...no-brainer.

Welcome aboard, Joe!

I'm thinking the same as you and it makes no difference to me. If it took a non-grayshirt offer to get him, so be it.

Welcome aboard Joe! Great job Coach Kill!

Great addition to the Gophers - Welcome Joel, we look forward to seeing you in maroon and gold.

That is AWESOME news about Bjorklund! I know he was one of the main guys everyone had targeted for late commits in this class once Coach Kill came on board. It is amazing how many of those kids actually did get their chance to become Gophers. Btw, I know it was likely a grey-shirt offer Bjorklund took, but people have to realize he took that grey-shirt offer over offers from Toledo, Indiana, Northern Illinois, UNLV, Wyoming, Northern Iowa, and North Dakota State... Joe was a legit D-1 prospect!

Who are all the Minnesota kids that have got their chance in the last month or two?
