is expecting an occasional trip to the Outback Bowl wrong? Why can't the "U" achieve to be like OSU, Mich., etc. ?

doogie, do you really think that anyone on this board is happy with being a big-ten also ran. the reason most people like brewster is beacuse they believe that he might be the person who will not only take us to the occasional outback bowl, but also the occasional rose bowl? just because many of us are sound-minded enough to know that this is something that will not happen overnight doesn't mean that anyone is happy with being an also-ran.

the trajectory of the program is what the realists are interested in, and there are enough threads that do a better job than i could in describing the upward trajectory of the program (not simply wins and losses--but better recruiting, better opponents, more excitement, better facilities, etc.). if the wins don't start coming, then i believe that most people will feeel it is time to move on.

also, i love the spirit behind this thread and poll. is there any way that we could make it into an annual thing with an analogous story outside the message board?

"Touchdownnnnnnnnn Jackrabbits"

I must admit, Danny B's bit the week of the SDSU game -- though another cheapshot -- was hilarious. Now I can't get "Touchdown Jackrabbits!" out of my head. Even the guys on the BTN (DiNardo, Mason, Griffith) picked up on it. They were guffawing about the Gophers' struggles with the Jackrabbits D on one of their shows last week.

Former players? Mason's players? You don't think there is a loyalty question there? Sour grapes. Why don't you ask them how come this team looks so bad but is getting the same results you guys got. Then ask them, how does it feel to know you guys were just as crappy as this team?? I'd be interested to know what Brewer has to say about that? Oops, I mean some former players you talk to...all the time...in the midst of your frequent dialogues with Brewster and Maturi.

I really would like to know this too. If they are Mason guys, they really have to be called out on that, even if they are upset.
Jack Brewer savaged a caller this year when he suggested that the identity of this team was that they never quit, played hard til the end, Brewer asked when any Gophers team had quit? Then cut the caller off. Many of the teams Brewer and his teammates were on quit late in games, that was the mantra of the previous regime, epic meltdowns.

I think holding members of the media accountable and insisting upon high standards of journalistic integrity is a great thing. That should take the form of citing specific examples and pointing out obvious factual errors and flaws in logic. Just insulting Doogie, calling him negative, insisting he has a vendetta against the program and so on is pretty much just beating off.

Doogie: After the regular season, this seems like a great annual idea...helps get all posters energized/juiced for media coverage next year...can you help the board out on this for 2009?

Based on current poll results, doesn't look like you have much of a shot at overcoming Reusse's lead for "GH Media TOY" this year, so there shouldn't be a conflict of interest angle.

Fair enough.

As long as you are just stating your opinions here and elsewhere, you'll be on an equal footing with every other poster on the board.

No need, necessarily, to look too deeply for facts or reality in evaluating your opinions.

Anyone can question my writing or my opinions, that is fine and understandable ... but I work very hard in finding ways to formulate those opinions (talk to a lot of people, do my homework, etc.) ... not entirely sure what you're getting at with the "look too deeply" comment, but my work ethic will always be there.

Doogie...The Gophers have had the opportunity and earned the right to play in the upper tier Big Ten bowl games only to be passed over by teams with worse records (but better fan basis that fill the seats). It's people like you that can't see the forest through the trees and continue to have unrealistic expectations.

The Gophers record: 6-6
Bowl teams on our schedule: 8/12
Wins vs. Bowl teams: 3/8
BCS Bowl Teams on schedule: 2
Big Ten Teams not on schedule: Michigan (1-7) and Indiana (1-7)

I heard Brewer on Paul Allen last week (Thursday maybe?) and he was really bagging on Brewster and the current program. He seems to remember the Mason years as being filled with unending glory. I was disappointed in that he sounded like a bitter Mason backer rather than a true booster of the program.

i heard it tooo. he said it will be nice to get back to the mason years and be able to get these rivalry trophies back in minnesota. i spit out my soda when he said that.

I went to the first few Brewster press conferences and provided the board with his quotes ... then was able to sift through the BS, and stopped going ... and maybe I'm being too strong because it's not all BS by the way ... and in many ways, he is better than many coaches.

Wait, so you are covering the Gophers football program but stop going to the press conferences?Would that not be your beat? Whether or not you think Brewster is full of it, shouldn't you be there? Should we even trust what you write? Especially regarding weekly press conferences?

Wow, just wow......

But don't question his work ethic. Man Doogie, you need to think before you write.

Winnipeg -- Believe what you want ... just next time be sure to re-post my entire take, not bits and pieces.

The only difference between you and most of the people here is access, Doogie. If you don't want it, I'd be more than willing to have your access.

GophBen -- You can be my intern any day ... you are more than welcome to join me ... and I have never denied that ... I've worked here for 12+ years, so have been very, very fortunate, like many people in other areas, to build up a good network ... in other words, get to hear about a lot of stuff ... but I have never pretended that I am above anyone on here, or that my voice is the final say, bar-none.

Yeah - it would be good to get back to coughing up 3 TD leads in the 4th quarter. Ah, the good old days...

Doogie, you take far too much S@#* on this site. You never insult anyone, post your opinions, yet get ripped no matter what. I think it might be jealously, that people think (even though you don't) that someone's opinion matters more than theirs - I'm not sure what goes through people's minds. I'm glad you're on here providing information and opinions - even though it isn't always what people want to hear.

It reminds me of where I was doing play-by-play for the football semifinals last Friday and Saturday at the dome. The MSHSL provided me with an extensive booklet of "official pronounciations" by player, by team. Yet, when following the guide to the letter - literally - I still got about a dozen emails during the course of the day from viewers claiming I was still saying names incorrectly. I realized after awhile sometimes you can't win no matter what you do.

I'm surprised you still post here but I'm glad you do.

Josh087 -- Are you doing games Friday and Sat.? If so, where can we listen to you? Thanks for the nice words.

Doogie - check your inbox.
