Where do the teams stand entering Week 1 of the season?

Our own Noel Thompson gives us his Big Ten Power Rankings.

1. Penn State
Is this the year James Franklin leads the Nittany Lions to the top of the conference?

2. Ohio State
The defending National Champions have a few question marks heading into the season, but they have all the talent in the world to defend their title.

3. Oregon
Dillon Gabriel is gone, but now comes in Dante Moore. Oregon lost some production from last year, but they also brought in playmakers from the transfer portal.

4. Illinois
Illinois returns a ton of production from a 10-win team from last year. Along with the talent and a favorable schedule, the Illini are positioned to make some noise this year.

5. Michigan
The Wolverines have talent across the board, and the schedule isn't the toughest. The question is, how will true freshman Bryce Underwood do in his first year?

6. Indiana
After their Cinderella season last year, the Hoosiers hit the portal hard to prove that last year wasn't a fluke. In fact, their roster this year might be better than last year.

7. USC
Talent is never a problem for the Trojans; it's just a matter of putting it all together on the field. The Trojans could make a serious run this year.

8. Iowa
Iowa is Iowa, which always puts them in decent shape on this list. They will be good in the trenches and solid on defense.

9. Minnesota
The Gophers return one of the best tailbacks in the country in Darius Taylor. They have an All-American at Safety in Koi Perich. How painful will the growing pains be for QB Drake Lindsey?

10. Nebraska
QB Dylan Raiola should take a step forward in year two, and Nebraska brought in some playmakers around him. The schedule is there for the Huskers to get some wins under their belt.

11. Rutgers
They return a ton of production from last year on the offensive side of the ball, but they did lose star running back Kyle Monangai. The schedule is tough, but this should be a solid team.

12. Michigan State
The Spartans are my sneaky team this year in the Big Ten. They return a lot from last year, and they added a good amount from the portal. This team will go as far as QB Aidan Chiles takes them.

13. Washington
Felt bad putting the Huskies at this spot, the offense returns plenty of talent from last year, including 1,000-yard rusher Jonah Coleman. I'm intrigued to see how Washington does this year.

14. Wisconsin
The Badgers will have a new starter under center via the transfer portal with Billy Edwards Jr from Maryland. The schedule is one of the hardest in the nation.

15. UCLA
Nico Iamaleava comes in from Tennessee, and all eyes will be on him. The Bruins don't return a ton from a team that was pretty mediocre last year.

16. Maryland
One of the most frustrating teams to figure out year to year. They hope to rebound from a rough 2024 season.

17. Northwestern
SMU transfer QB Preston Stone looks to come in and help one of the worst offenses from a year ago.

18. Purdue
Who the heck knows how this team will do, considering they added 54 players in the transfer portal. Should be interesting to see.

Good list. Good spot for Gophers to start and hopefully methodically work their way up.

Go Gophers!!

This seems to be a pretty reasonable assessment. If it proves to be accurate, and the season follows suit exactly, the Gophers will be 6-3 in the B1G.

If they do that, and win all 3 non-conference games (certainly possible) then we're talking about a 9-3 regular season.

WINS:

Nebraska
Rutgers
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Northwestern
Purdue
---
Buffalo
Northwestern State
Cal

LOSSES:

Ohio State
Oregon
Iowa

I think most people would be very happy with 9-3. I know I would.
