Lav is one guy I'll really be pulling for this season. I'll miss him on ESPN's college basketball coverage, specifically the Big Ten. As a tandem, he & Musburger were top shelf.
Lavin is already making an impact on the recruiting trail:

Go Gophers!!
Bad news for the Gophers. Jakarr Sampson is Tharpe's teammate.
I agree that Lav has shown more as analyst than a head coach. Nevertheless, I hope it works out for him at St. John's. Maybe he's learned a few things during his time at ESPN. He's certainly had access to some of the best head coaches in the country.

Just my two cents, but I think people put too much stock in that teammate stuff anyways. I wish Lavin well also, great guy on TV. Also agree better on TV than the sidelines.

It's not everything but there are plenty of examples where it makes a difference. The Skyline 4 is the biggest example. Green and Johnson came together and Michael Carter came with his teammate. Greg Oden and Mike Conley were high school teammates. Cory Joseph isn't playing with Mo but instead his high school teammate Thompson are going to Texas together. Cory picked his high school teammate over the old friend.
and his own brother
