I hate to be a troll just throwing out a random name being all negative and whatsuch, I also know mangino was on the sidelines today, sorry I have a "man crush" on Gary but I used to be a huge Buff fan before the whole falling out at CU.

If you look at his website its clear he still wants to coach a D1 school. He has the resume to coach for this team. He's won the Rose bowl, he's not going to be super expensive since he HAS been out of it for a few years now and he DID have a falling out at CU. Say what you will about that whole CU situation if you know about what happened but I really think it was blown way out of proportion by the media and CU was made an example.

I really wont have my feelings hurt if you hate this thread and/or the idea. Im just curious to hear the opinions... sorry to make another "useless" thread if you think thats what this is.

From Charlie Walters column.

"Pssst: Gary Barnett, who coached Northwestern to the 1995 Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl, was two-time Big Ten coach of the year and a national coach of the year, expressed interest in the Gophers' football coaching job that Tim Brewster got, but his agent was told Minnesota wasn't interested.

The Gophers, who lost 32-21 on Saturday to USC, open their 2011 football season at Southern California on Sept. 3. "

So much for that...

He could change his mind tho...

so it seems that its a Maturi problem. maybe they think a proven coach would ask for too much money? It doesn't seem to make sense that they wouldn't have at least interview him. Oh well, maybe this next go round they will bring him in. If he even has expressed interest it seems stupid otherwise.

Why was he passed over if that is what happened, was it all because of the CU situation and the fact they thought he would bring to much baggage?

I do think the U will be very reluctant to bring in someone tainted with scandal.

I do think the U will be very reluctant to bring in someone tainted with scandal.

Although the scandal hangs over his head and no matter what really happened, his experience is exactly what this program needs because he has been there done that as a head coach. If Brew does not work out and Barnett is interested he should be a top candidate for the Job.

Let's face it, after what we have been through, the U is going to run away from anyone who has even a whiff of scandal. Sadly, that eliminates some people like Barnett who would otherwise be excellent candidates, as well as guys like Leach and Leavitt from USF. The fact that they wouldn't even let Tubby bring on Jimmy Williams as an assistant 20-30 years after his minor infractions tells you all you need to know.

With regards to Barnett specifically, I would also have concerns at this point about how long he's been away. I don't recall specifically what year he left Colorado, but he's now been gone at least 5 years or so I think? That's a long time to be out of coaching. From that standpoint he would have been a better choice in 2007.

Wasnt it

something about an alleged rape involving a player and Barnett not having the proper response? Its been awhile and its fuzzy.

It might be a lot to saddle a new President and a new AD with, unless he has a committment to run a squeaky clean program, he could bring them down. A coach with no scandals is a big plus.

good football coach turned blind eye to problems in program

Just say no, the last thing this program needs is a coach that was surrounded by scandal "sexual violence allegations" and problems. After the incident with the Brookhaven guy's and Dom Jones that's all we need is a coach that would bring "reporters" looking for those sorts of problems from the start.
Barnett was a good football coach don't know if he has rehabbed his reputation enough to warrent even being in the discussion.

There are plenty of coaches who know how to coach and know how to run clean programs - and aren't past their sell by date. Hire a scandal-ridden coach, and it's going to be a feeding frenzy, people are going to search for scandal 10 times harder than they might otherwise. That dark cloud will hamper winning.

Sheeesh

Google Barnett and read what happened at Colorado and you will see things that we wouldnt touch with a 10 foot pole I would guess.

Even if he was clean as a whistle, he'd be a tough hire at this point in his life. The man would be 65-years old on opening day next season. There are enough obstacles to overcome to recruit athletes to Minnesota. You'd have opposing coaches pointing out this guy's age all the time. No thanks.

If we hired him, it would drastically complicate the search for the next President and AD: the coach would become their responsibility. Plus he would likely only be coaching for a few years.

The whole "rape" thing is one of the most overblown stories I have ever remembered.

Gary Barnett was asked why she wasn't on the team anymore (the reporter was hinting that she was cut from the team because she's a woman and as part of the scandal), and he responded something like because she's a bad kicker. It was a much longer tirade about her not being a Div 1 caliber kicker.

Additionally, that kicker's accusations were not backed up by any sort of information. She refused to say who raped her, when she was raped, etc., etc, the information also came out much later. She left the program in 2000, she talked to Rick Reilly (not the cops, not Colorado, etc.) about the alleged rape.

Now I understand there are factors with rape that I could never understand and that it still very well could have happened. However, you can see why some people close to the program (like the head coach) might be a skeptical about her accusations.

Good God.

So Let me get this straight, here. Here's what we think our administration wants our next coach to be from reading this thread combined with others:
- 100% squeaky clean record
- Successful and proven "name" coach with BCS experience
- It would likely be someone who isn't currently coaching now since they would never leave their job to come here
- Not too old
- Would not scoff at coming to MN and competing here
- Someone who doesn't want too much money
- Someone who would not bolt for a better job

We might as well give up now.

Garry Barnett is a terrible human being and I'm glad the Gophers aren't interested in him. I have my disagreements with Brewster but at least in his heart I believe he's a good person. Barnett is not.

Khaliq - - I'm not saying that I disagree with you because frankly I don't know, but is your opinion based entirely on the Katie Hnida incident? Or is there more that i'm missing?

I think there was more to the scandals than just the Kate Hnida incident. The program was accused of using sex as a recruiting tool, including hiring escorts. There was 6 rape allegations. Maybe UTEP's Mike Price could be Gary Barnett offensive coordinator?

Chubby....you say that like it's a bad thing.

JK

the retarded thing about those 6 rape allegations are that they all came out at the same time, none of the girls originally reported anything to authorities and none of them would give statements to officials. They were all looking for buyouts.

here is Gary's timeline. Other than his bad loss to texas at the end, I'd say it is a pretty decent track record.

1982-83: Head coach at Fort Lewis, Durango, Colo.
1984-1991: Assistant to Colorado head coach Bill McCartney
1992-98: Head coach at Northwestern, Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1995, 1996
1999: Named 22nd head coach at Colorado
2001: Colorado wins Big 12 championship, Barnett named Big 12 Coach of the Year
2002: Colorado wins Big 12 North Division championship
2004: Scandal erupts amid allegations that Colorado used sex and alcohol to recruit football players. Barnett is suspended, then reinstated over disparaging remarks attributed to him about a female player. Multiple investigations end with no sex-related criminal charges. A report criticizes Barnett for lax oversight of players but says he did not condone improper practices.
2004: Colorado wins Big 12 North Division championship, Barnett named Big 12 Coach of the Year
2005: Colorado wins the Big 12 North Division championship, loses to Texas 70-3 in the conference championship game
2005: Forced out as Colorado's coach, accepting a $3 million buyout.

sorry to bring up a dead thread... I just thought I would since Forde from ESPN mentioned Gary.. though he has a disclaimer,

It came for Minnesota coach Tim Brewster (11) on Sunday. Career record as coach of the Gophers: 15-30. Big Ten record: 6-21. Record against obscure opponents from the Dakotas: 1-2. Record this season in the really awesome new stadium your school opened last year: 0-4. So, yeah, the jig was up. As for successors: If the Gophers do what most schools do and counter the profile of the last hire, they get a proven head coach -- but who?

Tony Dungy is not coming home. Mike Leach's aerial circus seems a poor fit for an outdoor team in the Snow Belt. If it were up to The Dash and you wanted someone who knows how to win in the Big Ten without many built-in advantages, a call to Gary Barnett would make a whole lot of sense. (Disclaimer: The Dash played for Barnett in high school.)

That's not unusual at all. A huge number of rapes go unreported in this country because of social attitudes toward rape victims. When there's a case of institutional abuse like this allegations tend to snowball in part frequently because as women come forward others feel strength in numbers and gain the courage to say something.

Dan McCarney, Gary Barnett. What other champions of women's rights do you guys have in mind? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?
