Game 7 Gophers Host Wake Forest (11-30-22)

"WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind a season-high 30 points from junior guard Jewel Spear, the Wake Forest women’s basketball team remained unbeaten at home, defeating Coastal Carolina, 76-61, Sunday evening at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Deacs (4-3, 0-1 ACC) used a strong defensive effort and efficient three-point shooting to upend the Chanticleers (1-4, 0-0 Sun Belt). Wake Forest also totaled 20 assists on its 26 made baskets with senior Kaia Harrison totaling a career-best six assists to lead the way while senior forward Olivia Summiel and Spear each tallied five assists which were also career highs for the upperclassmen...."

Looking at their roster, they are much deeper (and generally taller) than the Gophers in the forward position. Hopefully we are faster and more adept at scoring.

Very excited for the game tonight. Might be the best matchup (closely matched teams) of the season so far. The Real Time RPI predicts a 4 point victory for Minnesota (RPI 118) over wake forest (RPI 78). Will be interesting to see if it plays out that way, I feel confident the Gophs have improved a lot on their road trip so will that continue to seem to be the case? will the home court advantage also give them an additional boost?

We will need our actual RPI to be better than 118 to have a good shot of an NIT berth or close to 500 conference record.

Awesome shares.

If Minnesota can get the defense up to around middle of the pack (points allowed and points off turnovers) Minnesota should be around 60-70 next year. For comparison teams like Indiana and Ohio State start 4 seniors, juniors, or grads.

I love that Ohio State has jumped to #4 in the nation with "only" an 82 score. That's the power of the on ball turnover and score OS defense that I think would translate to the Gophers more frequently.

Of course, it takes players that can do that without getting roasted - not for good scorers like Scalia to do.

These new Gophers may do that.

Yes I know that horse is beaten to death.

Love that OS defense, #4 in USA.

I do think the sample size is rather small so some teams are probably over rated RPI wise i.e. Penn State @ #6? or Under rated i.e. Ohio State @ #82? I think once we hit 10 things will have stabelized a lot. I think that because my recollection is that is about the number that the NET rankings kick in?

The first NCAA NET rankings are usually released the first Monday, or so, in December. That should mean next Monday.

Last year. Gophers will score and play good ball. Need to see that materialize in defense too, looking ahead.

So far this season. Margin is points scored minus points allowed. Ohio State manufactures points from the defense extra.

Chilly shooting from both teams to start, but tied at 4 and Battle shooting a freethrow.

Falling apart here at the end of the third. Make some free throws Rose. Need better D at the 3 pt line.

Battle having a poor night. None of her shots are even close. Thankfully Cayton saved one of her missed wide open lay ups.

Nice back to back 3's for Mara. Now down 4 points!

Aaaghhh... The layups! Alright! Big three from gradwell!

I was trying to think of GOOD mid major players who could produce and give this team some experience…. These high major transfers who averaged 1.8 points a game at their previous stop aren’t the answer… IMO…

They made their lay ups more difficult than they needed to be. It was a bad night for Battle to have her worst game in her young career.

Tip the hat to Jewel Spear hitting a very tough 3 to win the game for Wake. Gopher women with a nice comeback in the 4th. Just short.
