Kansas and Minnesota last met in November of 2013. A 70-59 Gopher victory improved Minnesota’s record versus the Jayhawks to 4 wins and 14 losses. Rachel Banham led the scoring with 26 points followed by Micaella Riche with 20 points; but Amanda Zahui provided the headline triple double: 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.
KU was coached by Bonnie Henrickson who lasted one more season before being dismissed and replaced by current head coach Brandon Schneider. Henrickson was fired after her 11th season and two NCAA appearances. Schneider is now in his 11th season which includes two NCAA appearances. And following a 16-14 (6-12 conference) 11th place finish in the Big 12 the 11th year alarm bells are sounding.
With Minnesota looming, Kansas is 4-0 with wins over Kansas City 74-64, Northwestern State 75-60, Lamar 65-54 and Missouri 82=77. This is a “how are we doing” game for both teams.
Schneider’s a plan to put the Jayhawks back in flight? Surround 6’0 All Big 12 junior guard S’mya Nichols with some talented fire power. Nichols can play positions 1-4 (the Jayhawks don’t really utilize a anchor post). And if the Missouri game is any indication Nichols will handle the ball a lot, score 20 points, grab 5 rebounds dish 7 assists.
The goal is to ramp up the offense especially from three. The surrounding players Include some five and four star recruits who are sorting out their role. and features a couple of familiar names. 6’3” senior guard Elle Evans transferred to KU after a year at North Dakota State. Evans scored 20 points with 4 rebounds in 37 minutes against Missouri. She has the green light from beyond the arc.
Another 6’3” senior is forward Lily Meister. The Indiana transfer had 8 points and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes against Missouri.
Given the upgrade in the opponent’s size and speed, It should be a fun and challenging evening in Rock Chalk’s temple.
