Game 4: Gophers host NJIT 11-14-25

Although they aren’t currently ranked, they are doing exactly what a highly-ranked team does against the level of competition they’ve faced. Obviously, they haven’t played enough games yet to get a real feel for exactly how good they are, but they are giving me vibes of a Power 5 version of Dawn’s best South Dakota teams, and that is a very good thing.

Marquette was supposed to provide a measuring stick, but despite the fact they haven’t lost to anyone else yet, we blew them out.

Of course, road games are a completely different animal, where the right mental mindset is required to withstand what is usually a more aggressive mindset by the opponent and to take the home crowd out of the game.

Only time will tell, but early returns are good. They play great team defense, but many of the top teams have individual players who can take over close games no matter how sound the defense, so I don’t know what our ceiling is, but I think a Sweet 16 is very much in play for this group, and after that, catch a break or two and who knows?

And, NJIT beat the St Thomas women by five today. So, they go 1-1 on their midwest trip. That probably makes for a nicer trip home tonight.
