I have been a Gophers Basketball fan all my life, but I think that the University of Richmond could likely cause an upset. They have a very strong team this year, with so many good returning players. I wouldn't count this as a win just yet.

Thoughts?

Well of course there is no such thing as a 'sure win', especially when you're playing on the road. And anyway, I believe that Richmond is slightly favored in this game?

What I do know for a fact is that I really enjoy watching that Kendall Anthony kid from Richmond. I mean 5'8, 140 lbs., and with athleticism and hops so much he can dunk it, and forcefully so. :D Reminds me very much of a modern-day Spud Webb, but this kid can also be extremely dangerous from 3-point range such that he can actually hurt you when he's on, and at that point he becomes not just a charming novelty but an actual weapon, and he in combination with Lindsay and Allen can create problems.

I would still expect us to win, because we (in my opinion anyway) are still more talented than they, but then again, we've got a whole lot of new pieces including our coach, and this is a road game, so I wouldn't exactly bet the mortgage on it, as it is entirely possible this game might be very close or we just might get beat.

Either way, this is likely to be an up-tempo affair, as they like to force the issue offensively and press and run, as do we, whether the shots are falling or not (in both our cases). They are averaging 58 FG attempts per game, while we are averaging 60. So a rather frenetic pace, but I like it. :) It's very fun, and this should probably be a really fun game.

We are 1 point underdogs, so it definitely wouldn't be a surprise. Can't wait to watch.

It will be a close game. We need more close games. Whether we win or not, this is the kind of game our kids will learn about themselves and hopefully improve.

Agree. Can't wait to see some adversity in a close game.

FYI. Richmond is favored by Vegas...so it's an upset if the Gopher wins.

Unless it's a misprint, the paper this morning shows the Gophers as 1-point faves.

Would be a fun game to watch...

Tonight will be a challenge, we're playing a solid team on the road. If we can win tonight we'll have a decent chance at getting through the non-conference schedule with only 1 loss. Tonight is the type of game where we need our leaders (Hollins bros.) to play well.

It's just one game, but potentially one that is a deciding factor in tourney / no tourney this season.

Minnesota is a better team. Toss up game though.

Will be interesting to see how Pitino allocates floor time / uses the bench tonight.

Tony Allen, Derrick Williams... don't let them establish things early.

I have a feeling this game will be won or lost beyond arc.

Ditto. I can't see it out here, either.

Makes me wonder why on God's green earth I'm spending $160 a month on cable, but it's easier just to not even think about that.

Richmond favored by 1. Important game. We need go a minimum of 3-2 vs Richmond, FSU and the 3 Maui games. Figuring we lose to Syracuse, we can only afford one other slip-up. I'd hate to use it in the 1st game.

That may very well be true, but that can be difficult to control. For the team - tonight and most games this year - focus should be on opponent's 2FG%. Tricky test tonight. Hopefully Sparrow is wasting possessions by throwing up a bunch of shots from deep.

Well it could be a close game or not, I mean you never know either way, and especially now, so early in the season and with all the factors and variables playing in. Our edge in overall talent (and I do honestly believe in that factor) might be enough to run them off their floor, but then again their home court and the fact they do have talented players (and a very good coach, Chris Mooney, a young guy most likely ticketed for far bigger things) of their own might allow them to wipe us right off their floor.

The bottom line to me is this is a quality opponent from the A-10 on the road, a team which has averaged 22 wins per season over the past five years, and is very well-coached, so I would regard this game as being a great litmus test so as to see exactly where we're at right now, and as Gopher Warrior mentioned, this is exactly the type of game which might be the determining factor between an NCAA bid or not.

The Gophers for their sake should have the mindset that they can get to the tournament, but the reality is, we just aren't tourney material this season. We have 3 real Big Ten caliber players that could hold their own with the majority of teams, but that's really about it!
*That being said, I think this is a game we SHOULD, in theory win tonight.

You've already decided that?

How could you possibly decide that already?

In theory, they dont seem to have a good shot. That certainly doesn't mean they can't suprise, like other teams have in past seasons, but on paper, it doesn't seem likely. It's hard going through the schedule looking to see where they can win 18 games, not to mention needing 20 to have chance. Go look at the schedule! As much as I was trying to convince myself that we could win 19-20 games, I just couldn't see it when referencing the schedule.

Haven't even SEEN our squad yet.... No way I can make a determination as to whether or not we are a tournament team

Well this team is a tournament team - just which tournament is the Q.

Richmond's arena looks nice. The picture quality of this A-10 feed looks really good. Let's go!

On paper, Richmond seems like a quick, athletic team that should be able to handle and exploit the Gopher press. Will this be true and if so how would the Gopher's respond and make in game changes? On the other hand, Gophers should have a major height and strength advantage. It's a good early test and I'm very curious how we play on the road.

Let's go #2!!

Love what we are doing. Playing really fast and putting a ton of pressure on the ball.
