Winter Tour 2017
U C Riverside (3-8) kicked off its tour of upper Midwest hot spots with an 89-66 loss to Iowa State (5-5) in Ames. On the 19th, the Highlanders travel to Vermillion facing South Dakota before taking the Williams Arena court on Friday in Minnesota’s last non-conference match-up.
Minnesota will be Cal Riverside’s sixth power five conference foe. Previously they’ve lost to Southern Cal, Stanford, UCLA, Arizona State and Iowa State. Yesterday, Iowa State led at the end of the first quarter 19-15 before using some scoring spurts to pull away for the win. Against the Cyclones, UCR had 18 assists and 19 turnover reflecting their season averages of 15.2 assists and 16.9 turnovers per game.
Minnesota and Cal Riverside both played UNLV. UCR, shooting almost 60%, ran past UNLV in Tempe 95-88 posting the third highest point total in UCR history. The more workman like Gophers defeated UNLV in Las Vegas 79-72.
Cal Riverside was picked to finish 5th/6th in the Big West which projects them on a level with San Diego. Last season UCR, coached by John Margaritis (13th season), was 16-15 (9-7 in conference).
UCR starters against the Cyclones were:
5’8” G Sr Michelle Curry; 13.2 points per game.
5’ 10” G Sr Lauren Holt; 12.8 pts/game. 14 versus ISU. Holt is their primary 3 point shooter.
6’-0” G Sr Jannon Otto; 16 points versus ISU
6’1” F So Skyler Lewis;
6’0” G Sr Clemence Lefebvre
Wins: @ Fresno State 68-56, @(Tempe) UNLV 95-88, CSU Bakersfield 68-65.
Losses: Loyola Marymount 59-67, Southern Cal 46-64, @ Stanford 43-53, @(Reno) SMU 51-73, @ (Reno) Sacramento State 72-99, @ UCLA 48-68, @ Arizona State 48-73 and @ Iowa State 66-89.
Being the last conference game before the Gophers kick off the B1G season at Northwestern, we will interested in whether Taiye Bello gets the start and whether Taiye will become the primary post player.
