Leaving a Legacy on the Court

As with Minnesota, Grambling State made a coaching change last April. At Grambling, Freddy Murray finished 9-9 in the SWAC and was replaced after seven seasons by Courtney Simmons. Simmons took over the Lady Tigers after ten years as an assistant at Troy. Fun Fact: Wednesday will not be her first appearance at Williams Arena. Simmons played for Louisville when the Cardinals visited the Gophers in November of 2007. Minnesota won 74-69. Simmon’s 4 points, 1 rebound and 3 assists in 22 minutes were somehow overshadowed by Angel McCoughtry’s 39 points, 12 rebound effort.

Grambling is 3-4 with one game remaining before traveling to the North Star State. GSU’s resume has one shining moment. After taking down the always feared Champion Christian College 93-48, the Lady Tigers dropped road contests to North Texas 60-83 and South Florida 57-83. However, Grambling saved a little something-something for Arizona State when the Sun Devils visited Grambling as part of the PAC 12/SWAC Legacy Series.

An exciting first quarter ending at 18 all was soon eclipsed by a second quarter shootout. The Lady Tigers nailed 9 three pointers outscoring ASU 27 to 14. The Sun Devils rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter before Little Rock transfer DeMya Young netted a three with :11 seconds to giving Grambling a 70-67 victory..

Young, a 5’10” sophomore PG, was the star. She scored 23 points with 7 rebounds in 35 minutes and was deadly from three hitting 7-11. She’s the only Lady Tiger averages in double figures (12.7 points per game).

Young had some help from beyond the arc. 5’7” sophomore SG, Jazmyne Jackson contributed 15 points in 22 minutes going 5-5 from three.

The other Lady Tiger in double figures was 6’1” Junior F Brenda McKinney-a transfer from Chipola College. She had 11 points and 3 rebounds in 22 minutes.

Since the win over ASU, Grambling has lost @ Houston 74-106, won @ Northwestern State 64-59 and lost @ Oklahoma 69-103. They play the always wily Wiley College on Monday.

Versus Oklahoma, 6’2” graduate forward and Tulane transfer Aniyah Grant posted 16 points and 9 rebounds in 29 minutes.

The Lady Tigers have started 9 different players with Aniyah Grant being the only player starting every game. 11 players are averaging over 11 minutes per game. Despite their three-point heroics taking down Arizona State, they are averaging .329 from behind the arc.

While the PAC 12/SWAC Legacy Series was about social justice education, here’s hoping basketball provided an educational spark.

Injury Update:

I don’t know if DeMya Young is injured; but she didn’t play versus Oklahoma.

The schedule on the website has the game starting at 11:00 am on Wednesday, is that correct?

Doesn't seem like as much of a defensive focus. We're just outscoring them.

And 7 turnovers in a half seems a bit high against a lower tier team like Grambling. Maybe Coach P is experimenting with a faster paced play. In which case this is probably the right game to do it.

Gophers just plain wore them out in the third and Braun really got in the zone.

Braun 6 of 8 from 3 for 26 points.
Battle 10 assists
Grace 3 of 5 from 3
Czinano 10 and Holloway 9 off the bench
15 turnovers vs 11 steals
Out rebounded them 45 to 27
Some things that jump out...

Braun 26.25 PPG in last 4. Would be a good year for conference to give out a second place player of year award
Would be hard for Braun to beat out Mackenzie Holmes, a returning First Team AA player.

Nice win. They escaped the third quarter letdown. As a result, coach was able to play the reserves in the fourth quarter. Czinano and Holloway played great. The others got some valuable experience and should learn from their mistakes and feel more comfortable.

We are 10 and 1....hadn't updated yet
Heyer with seven offensive rebounds and two defensive rebounds. There's a stat line you don't see often.
Well she may not be scoring on her own offensive rebounds it's great to see her getting us second chances. It's another example of her good positioning.

There was a lot to like about the Gophers women's basketball team's 96-64 nonconference victory over Grambling State in Wednesday's matinee at Williams Arena.

The Gophers won their seventh straight, improved to 10-1 overall, dominated on points off turnovers (28-8) and second-chance points (27-4). All 11 players who saw action scored.

Braun scored 26 points in 25 minutes of playing time. The only one capable of slowing her Wednesday was Gophers coach Dawn Plitzuweit. With the game in hand, Plitzuweit sat Braun down for good with 2:52 left in the third quarter.

None of the Gophers starters played in the fourth quarter.

Braun hit eight of ten shots overall. She went 6-for-8 on threes, setting a career-best for made threes.

And she's on a tear since making just three of 12 shots overall and one of nine threes in a victory over Norfolk State on Nov. 29. In four games since, she has made 35 of 66 shots overall and 19 of 32 threes, nearly 60%..

I really liked seeing that the reserves played the entire 4th quarter. The starters were cheering them on from the bench with enthusiasm. Grambling was very "handsy" and played a full court press several times. The cheerleaders were getting workout running to the ends to throw t-shirts to the kids after the 3's.

Anyone have any idea why Zie has not had any court time this year? I saw Senden didn’t play but she had a boot on. Probably an sprain?

I wasn't able to watch this game live but I like to see Hart having another good game. 8 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks!

7th straight win... 10th of the year...

we had ELEVEN total wins last season..

- Battle 2nd career game with 10 assists
- Heyer was 1 rebound short of a double/double
- Sophie with 4 MORE ASSISTS
- Maggie with maybe her break out game? 10 points, 4 rebounds
- Nia best game in a bit good to maybe see her gain some confidence again, 9/7, 3 steals and a heck of a block

- Mara right now is JUST locked in right now.
