According to GI radio which you can find in another thread. Next Ra’Shede.

Good. Even with Duke's unfortunate injury we have enough tight ends (IMHO), and hopefully Elmore can contribute at DE.

This doesn't surprise me. Kind of figured it would happen.

I was hoping this would happen. I think he has the potential to contribute a lot more at DE.

Worst thing to happen to Gopher football since the move out of Memorial Stadium to the dump.

He could be a great DE. It was his better position in HS.

I hope he wanted this change, and that he dominates there.

Hearing this, got me thinking of a slight twist on a well-known slogan . . .

"GE - he brings good things . . . and strife."

May he engineer 2-3 years of mulitple sacks!!!

I am a little surprised, they seemed really sold on him as a TE. That being said, I'm not opposed to it, he has all the intangibles to be a very good DE.

Me too...

We are only 10 days into his career as a tight end and Duke is out for the year. Does seem curious based on the hype
they sold on his ability to be a tight end and his desire to be one. But, when Leidner was talking about new guys contributing or being phenoms he didn't mention him so maybe the handwriting was on the wall beginning in the summer.
Dunno. If he wants to be a defensive end, then awesome! Hope that's the case. He is a man child and obviously can be
a major factor. Probably able to play quicker at DE?

Not surprised at the move, but that it happened this soon. He will have the ability to make more of an impact at DE than TE. Last years Iowa game is the classic example where our best offensive threat, M Williams, did not get a single touch.
Instead of being a glorified fullback, he will be trying to dismember opposing QB's. Clayes will use his talent better than Limegrover and since Kill is hanging his hat on having a dominant D, it makes sense to switch him there.

Gophersports has him listed at 6'6" 258lbs. You'd think he can easily be 270-275lbs with a few years in the strength and conditioning program. Sounds like the makings of a stout DE!

A few different factors come into play:

1. Presumably, he preferred to play TE and the staff wanted to give him every opportunity to stick there (a la D. Jones). I think most would agree that he has a far higher ceiling at DE, and the summer workouts and fall camp must've been enough time to get him convinced of that as well.

2. Someone already mentioned Ra'Shede, and that's an apt comparison on more than one level. Elmore is almost certainly not going to be 320 lbs., but I could very easily see him being at 280 or 290 by the time he graduates. The official roster lists him at 258 already, and he's only 18 years old. He would've very likely outgrown the position physically even if he tried to stay at the right size for it.

3. Our roster has a huge imbalance between DE and TE. Counting Elmore as a TE, we currently have 6 Fr/So at TE and only 3 at DE (counting Stelter, who I see becoming a DT eventually). This will help shore up depth and certainly get everyone involved on the field more.

When you look at all of these factors, it was bound to happen sooner than later, but I do have to say I'm surprised it happened this quickly.

Glad this was decided sooner rather than later. Now he can add weight accordingly. Can't wait until he's racking up sacks against UW.

Good summary and observations.

If he is already 258 lbs I would imagine he was well on his way to becoming a DE prior to this announcement. I'm glad they gave him a try at TE but when he was being recruited most people thought his best position was DE.

I think this is a fantastic move, and I don't think he is shede like at least I hope not, he is longer and leaner (not height, just frame). I hope he stays around 270-5 and stays quick and stays at end. He could be a more powerful and explosive cockran, although not as fast.

I said pre fall camp that I thought and hoped he would consider playing defensive end

Hopefully this is something the young man wanted and embraces as far as change goes, the move to defensive end, I could really see him as an elite All Big 10 type of defensive end when it is all said and done. You could see even against weaker
competition that this kid really flashes at defensive end and has the physical tools and speed to beat people. Not only is Elmore good at playing the position physically, you can see on video he has the instincts and intelligence to recognize and diagnose plays quicker than most. He doesn't just charge the gap b'lls out going for the quarterback, he maintaines gap discipline and closes down on the run very well. I hope he is excited about this as gopher fans are. The coaches see his potential, I hope he see's it too.
He will see the field and be in the rotation at right or left defensive end and move around quickly enough to being a regular once he learns the calls. Elmore just has that "it" factor to him, a grown mans strength, and the kids going to be a fantastic defensive football player. Could not be happier about this, his ceiling is as high
as playing in the NFL some day on the defensive side of the ball, SKI U MAH go Gaelin, and go Gophers.

Ra’Shede was listed at 272 when he was a true freshman, 294 as a RS freshman and 302 as a soph. Theiren Cockran as a 4th year player is listed at 255 and Elmore is 258 as a true freshman.

Point?

A. EVERYONE recruited him as a DE. He lead the state in tackles for loss as a senior. Was an all-stater as DE

B. TE in HS, was a fullback. Look at his profile, very limited touches...not saying he couldn't play TE, but he wasn't utilized as a receiving TE...he was a big ol blocking back.

C. He tweeted just last night he was now at #270

I just searched for his Twitter account and this thread from a Nebraska board popped up: http://www.huskerboard.com/index.php?/topic/64246-tede-gaelin-elmore/

Highlight for me: "To be honest we probably lucky in the long run we didn't get the kid. Sounds like the reason Wisconsin didn't offer because he is not a good lockerroom fit. Take that whatever way you want, but it does say something."

Seems to me that Elmore is about the perfect teammate. His Tweets from the day he committed have been very positive, saying great things about the U.

Wisconsin DID offer and wanted Elmore. I'm not sure where that poster got that info from.

Same place we get the info that leads us to cool on players just committed to another school, our backsides...
