Here's a nice write-up on the friendship between Campbell and Viking draft pick Jayron Kearse. Boh grew in the same Ft Myers neighborhood.
Local buddies drafted by NFL teams
As long as De’Vondre Campbell can remember, he and Jayron Kearse have been friends.
A year ago, when in Fort Myers together, they talked about the dream of being NFL draft picks.
Saturday, that dream became a reality for both.
Campbell, an outside linebacker, went first, chosen by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round.
Kearse, a strong safety, went in Round 7 to the Minnesota Vikings. He and Clemson teammate, Immokalee’s Mackensie Alexander, will be teammates once again.
“We talked about our daughters we had around the same time, fatherhood,” Kearse said. “It’s always good to get together. We have the same type of family. We’ve worked so hard for this.”
Campbell added, “We said, ‘What if we both get drafted?’ That’s something we talked about growing up.”
The two grew up just a couple of blocks away from each other in Fort Myers.
“Like 4, 5 years old, we literally grew up together,” Campbell said. “We went to (Cypress Lake) together. He’s like a brother to me.”
While Campbell, a senior from Cypress Lake, didn’t know five years ago if he’d play college football – he would up at the University of Minnesota – Kearse was a highly sought-after safety who chose Clemson. He came out for the draft as a true junior.
