David Cobb did it for him, so now Rodney Smith plans to pay it forward.

A link in the Gophers’ running back fraternity was established when Cobb passed on encouragement and pointers to Smith in the five years since he left in 2014.

Now, as Smith approaches his 52nd and final collegiate game when the Gophers play Auburn in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida, on New Year’s Day, the sixth-year senior will be in the ear and text message threads of U redshirt sophomore Mo Ibrahim.

In a way, Smith feels like he owes Ibrahim for how accommodating and supportive Ibrahim has been this season. When Smith and Shannon Brooks went down with torn anterior cruciate ligaments in their knees last season, Ibrahim filled in like a pro, rushing for 202 times for 1,160 yards and nine touchdowns.

Now healthy, Smith took back his leading role, rushing 212 times for 1,094 yards and eight touchdowns and setting the Gophers’ all-time all-purpose yardage record this season. That didn’t leave many carries for Ibrahim, who followed his stellar 2018 performance with 94 carries, 464 yards and six TDs. The load splintered even more with Brooks’ 73 carries for 408 yards and two scores.

“Having them on the field is just different,” Ibrahim said. “I understand that they are having a great season and we are all complimenting each other. ... I don’t think it’s a big difference from last year to this year.”

Go Gophers!!

Great chemistry on this team. Way to go guys!

What a luxury to have Mo on this squad. He's in line to have a huge season in 2020, except that I have a feeling Ky Thomas is going to jump right in and steal the show. The backfield is certainly in good hands, in any event.

It will be interesting to see how the carries are spread out next season. It was a lot of fun to watch these three play together.
I do hope that there is a home run hitter waiting in the wings. Maybe Thomas?

Classic "Thunder & Lightning" with Ibrahim and Thomas.

I'm not going off anything other than fanciful speculation at this point, but i'm expecting Mo to start with 70-80% of the carries before it becoming an evenly split backfield between he and Thomas by mid-season. I like Williams and Wiley, too, but i don't expect either to get a ton of minutes other than mop-up or injury replacement. Working against them is that Mo has a ton of experience but wasn't heavily relied on this year, so he'll be fresh and hungry for his 2020 campaign.

Wiley has looked great. I think he will get a lot of carries next year. Oh, and he put on 20 lbs between HS sr year and start of freshman year.

Must be using steroids. I’ve heard it’s not possible to put that much good weight on in a year.

From my observations, Wiley will be #2 RB next year.
