Fresno State Men's Basketball players allegedly placed bets on games they played in, sources say

The offshore sites could, but I don't think most do outside of Final Four/CFP. The prop betting really seems to be more of an issue with the apps here.
As someone who uses an offshore site, the prop thing widely available everywhere because it’s the most easily profitable because it’s so easy to get people to dump money on a same game parlay that you get reduced odds in and they make more money

There’s a reason why this is what’s so heavily advertised

I’ll proudly thump my chest that I voted No on the lottery in Minnesota. I and the 14 others who did the same are gloating “I told you so!”

Seriously teaching self control and discipline in the age of 24/7 access to everything might be the moral challenge of our generation.
The instant gratification created by the internet/social media/online shopping created a bunch of people who can't hold a normal, productive conversation in public or show any degree of empathy or social ettiquite in person or online (no, this isn't directed towards anyone here😜). It's also shown how quickly parents were to preoccupy their kids with screens in lieu of doing, ya know, parenting. It's not everyone, there are a lot of parents who've done a good job. However, the 18-24 year old labor force is seriously lacking in ability to survive an entry level interview without going catatonic in way too many cases. They have nothing to relate with to anyone unless it was a recap of a five second tiktok video. And that's not their fault, it's exposed a huge flaw in what's going on (or what isn't) in people's homes in this country. And we're a blaming society now, because accountability and responsibility are no longer considered commendable and are actually considered flaws, so problem people point the finger at everyone else for the problems they cause and that's accepted and occasionally galvanizes people around that person depending on who it is.

Sorry, that got super ranty. I'm a very self righteous person, for better or for worse.

Much like anything this isn’t an issue where everyone is equal.

I like drinking beer. I’m not an alcoholic. I don’t drive drunk and I don’t think beer should be banned. Some people really really struggle with alcohol.

I like betting on games. I’m not a gambling addict. I find it very enjoyable to throw $10 on a game o wouldn’t otherwise care about (random west coast nba/ncaam/mlb game) and work for a couple hours while I watch. The $10 is mostly meaningless but gets me invested enough where I gain joy from it. Not everyone bets like me and that’s too bad.

So why aren't you using that extra money you have to help others who are in need?
Besides missing the entire point, which is spending money on something you have no control over as opposed to spending money on anything else that you can have some control over, which is stupid; How do you know whether or not I donate time or money to help others? Maybe I need to send you an itemized list? Stop being a jerk!

I enjoy going out to eat or have a drink or watch a show on Netflix or take a vacation. I can pretty much count on any of those things being a reasonably enjoyable experience. I can control the circumstances of each of those things. Change the channel, Order what I want, Pick the spot I want to vacation in.

When betting on a game, you have no control of what happens in that game. Unless you plan on being there and tackling the top player during the course of the game. Now, if you find if fun to throw away money with no way to control if you get any value or satisfaction from it, I guess I can roll my eyes, shake my head and wonder what other ways you enjoy screwing yourself out of your hard earned money. Or maybe you have so much money that if you flush it down the toilet, it doesn't matter.
Sports wagering is fun. Winning makes it even better.

There is possible control by using analytics to find weakness in the markets. One isn't forced to bet on every game.

Why are you betting on games and what kinds of bets are you making?

I'm not being judgmental, I'm genuinely curious. I don't bet, not for moral or budgetary reasons, but because it doesn't interest me. For me, the game is the hook. What's the hook of betting?

Most people would say the hook is that it gives you a rooting interest which adds some spice to the game. I don't really sports bet any more as I get older, but that was my main reason. Also many enjoy the high of winning a bet, similar to a big win at the blackjack table.

Gotta admit, the very few times I ever won at a Blackjack table, the only thing I felt was relief. Probably because I don't make enough money to be able to afford to lose even a $20.

Winning. Losing sucks.

You sound like someone who knows his limits and is responsible. It is too bad a lot of gamblers are different. It really is a nasty addiction for a lot of people, made worse by the fact that it is easier to "hide" than say an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Probably started as a way to have something to be interested in during covid as things were shut down and it’s something that makes a game I wouldn’t otherwise care about enjoyable as it feels like you’re “smarter” than the books when you catch a line you think is off (we ignore the ones that were wrong on 😅). It’s become more a social thing now as it’s gained popularity and mainstream attention in discussing lines, player props (did you see JJs line is only 70 yards? He’s going to explode on the lions this week), and season win projections (clearly the gophers always hit the over except in bball). Games you bet on also give an angle in a “lost” season where maybe the gophers football team sucks but man I feel good about beating MI and brosmer going off and it gives you some added impetus to cheer the win and if they lose the game at least brosmer throwing for 200 yards.
I personally bet on EPL, NCAA football and hockey, NFL and lesser so NHL. Then I end up betting on postseason sports. Types of bets cover whole spectrum. Part of it is I follow a lot of sports closely and feel plugged in and the betting ends up feeling like an added plug when I hit on how I expect a game script to go and win money on top of enjoying the game. Generally it doesn’t bother me if the game goes how I hope but lose the bet and if I win but my team loses, it makes it better. If both happen, that’s obviously ideal

I know somebody who has a similar philosophy. They argue it is entertainment money. They lose way more often than they win but still say the rush is fun..win or lose.
Could spend it on a concert, drinking, traveling but they choose gambling because it brings more excitement for them than other ways to spend money.

this is actually something my dad has also said to me. His vice are scratch offs (which are idiotically poor odds and he 100% admits he knows he will lose long term). His reasoning is he used to smoke and then chewed for awhile and this fills that "vice" to him and he knows it doesn't hurt anyone or his health long term, he doesn't spend what he can't lose, but he finds some joy in the playing it even if it is fleeting.

Now the man is incredibly lucky at times (has won 10k once and a couple other 1k plus prizes), but I have no doubt he's waaaaay in the hole dollar wise.

This is pretty much it. I don’t bet money I really care about and I get enjoyment out of it.

I’m down about $220 in the last 3 months across all sports. Basically a couple gopher tickets/nose bleed Vikings/etc. and I’ve had fun. Plus, I drink at home if I’m drinking. Really a money saver!!

I go up north every summer with a group of friends. One year we stopped at a casino on the way up and I "accidentally" won $60 at the blackjack table. It was an accident because I didn't know what the hell I was doing. It was hard to walk away from the table because greed and delusions of bigger winnings kicked in.

I guess that's my Grand Casino story.

I'm of a similar mind. I'm currently in the black in Vegas, and I will NEVER GAMBLE THERE AGAIN! I'm going to my grave with Las Vegas' money, bwahahaha! I might even have it with me symbolically in my casket!

Unfortunately this is much easier said than done for a lot of people. They chase their loses and get further and further in the hole gambling money they can't afford to lose.

I look at gambling this way....if you are doing it for fun and don't truly believe you are going to get rich doing it then it can be a fun activity for people. If you are gambling because you think you are going to get rich doing it you should probably look for a more productive way to use your money.

100%, just like any other vice. A couple beers and done works for some. It does not for others. I feel bad for people who struggle with any addiction.

Gambling is a fun activity for me and many others. And a horrible thing for some.

The University of New Orleans is getting in on the action as well.

The NCAA doesn't seem to care about much these days but gambling is one exception to that.
