The Gophers have received a commitment from Chicago offensive tackle Cameron James. He chose Minnesota over offers from Michigan State, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri and others.

The 6-foot-8, 280-pound offensive tackle is a four-star recruit, according to 24/7 Sports’ “Top 247” rankings. Within the composite rankings, he earned a three-star rating.

James is an offensive tackle with excellent length and athleticism. He has gained experience at both left (sophomore) and right tackle (junior) in high school. Within his film clips, James uses above average movement skills to his advantage. When he was asked to pull in space for runs or screens, he frequently hit the second and third levels. In Minnesota’s zone-blocking scheme, it is important to recruit offensive linemen with above average athletic traits. For example, the outside zone scheme is best executed when each player has the quickness to reach and rip defenders. As I discussed in my recent breakdown, outside zone is utilized to horizontally displace opponents. James certainly has the athleticism to pull and take excellent blocking angles. On tape, he also flashed his power and frequently finished blocks to the whistle.

Like many prospects his age, he is still learning the technical components of his position. While in Minnesota’s system, James will continue improving his stance, hand/hip technique, footwork and pass protection sets. I’m very curious to see where he’s at after spending a year in the strength program.

Overall, James is an excellent scheme fit and will have an opportunity to reach his full potential under offensive line coach Brian Callahan. If he can develop the technical aspects of his game, he has a very high ceiling.

You can watch his highlights below:

Fantastic! Absolutely crushing it in the state of Illinois. Great to get another big fella for the line.

I also see that Otto Hess - another Illinois OL prospect - was one of the first to respond to James' announcement.

James looks like another really strong addition to this class. Insane what we are pulling from Illinois right now with 4 of our top 6 guys coming out of the state of Illinois.

Who is next!

Welcome aboard!!! Great day. While QB's and WR'S can get the boat moving. It takes a great anchor(s) to keep the boat planted in elite territory.

Badly needed high quality offensive line commit. I hope Cameron is done growing because 6'8 is about the max height for a successful OL (Jon Ogden listed at 6'9 is the tallest big time lineman I can think of).

In that event he can just become a Tight End since at MN they're all lineman anyway...

This is a huge and welcome addition in the trenches! Would love to see one like this on the defensive line too!
Keep the boat moving PJ!

That's funny that is the Nate Wozniak role. Nate was listed at 6'10 at Minnesota and he's transitioned to tackle in the NFL. He's currently on the Giants roster which I wasn't aware of (I knew the Saints and Vikings had him around previously).

Welcome Big Fella!! Big Ten has 8 of the top 20 recruiting classes, as I speak. That's crazy.
We are 3rd...Ohio St #1 with same number of recruits as we have. Michigan #8 followed by us at #9 and Iowa with less recruits at #10.
Can we finish in the top 5 of the Big Ten recruiting rankings come Christmas time?
Can we finish in the Top 25 overall?
Are we going to play football this fall?

Nice addition, he moves well for a big guy. He seems to have the frame to add some good weight too. Welcome aboard!

Three Gophers on the Giants roster? Cool!

Illinois/Northwestern getting owned in their own state, and not just by the Gophers.

It's some grim stuff for Illini fans. Illinois doesn't have one commit from the IL top 50. Northwestern has only one (#3). It's not like nobody wants IL players - Minnesota has 5 of the top 20, Iowa 3, Notre Dame 2, Michigan 2, Louisville 2. Even Boston College scooping up 3 more between 21 and 30.

What's Lovie doing?

This is an interesting reply I saw from Cameron's OL coach at Simeon.
