Why can't this say "Rutgers QB Nelson..."?

Wow, that's sad. Happy Mother's Day, mom.

Good point. The bottom line is that this not good for anyone and particular the person who has been hospitalized. Without details, one shouldn't jump to conclusions. That said, I'm guessing this wasn't a simple self defense thing. Nelson is likely in some serious trouble especially if the person he allegedly assaulted is in the ICU. Although this is probably trivial in the big picture of things, I'm glad Nelson is no longer a member of the Gopher program because this situation will cast a very dark cloud over him. By the time this is all said and done, I'm guessing he'll also be a former Rutgers QB.

What a sad situation, even not knowing all the facts Nelson may have wrote his own ticket out of D1 football.

His football days are over. He may even see prison time if he is guilty.

Did that say star football player? If that's the case he's not the Phillip Nelson that played for the Gophers.

The audio clip from the police scanner said the victim was kicked in the head twice. That's just terrible.

Former Gopher QB Philip Nelson Jailed, Awaiting Assault Charges

"Minnesota State, Mankato, football player and Mankato East graduate Isaac Kolstad was in critical condition Sunday morning at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Police say Kolstad was found near the intersection of Cherry and South Front streets around 2 a.m."

Lets not gang up on Nelson until we actually know the facts.

What we do know is that this Kolstad kid played at his rival Mankato East and also at NDSU. I'm guessing he was lip jacking Nelson and maybe got what he was asking for (a fight), and lost. If Nelson got baited into a fight and whooped the dude's ass then hopefully nothing happens to Nelson. If Nelson was looking for a fight and did that, then shame on him.

A fight is one thing--kicking someone in the head twice while they're down is cowardly and dangerous.

I don't understand this line of thinking. Even if Nelson didn't start the fight, how about just walking away?

All coaches, and Kill in particular, tell their players to walk away from a fight, that it takes a bigger man to walk away than to get involved in an assault. Two things happen in a fight....you win, but the victim may sue you; or you lose....enough said there. Both bad outcomes. Always better to walk away.

So what you're saying is that we shouldn't "gang up" on Nelson until we know the facts, but that it's permissible to criticize the guy who's now in the hospital.....Got it.

If some guy gets in your face (hypothetically, since no one knows what happened) you aren't going to "walk away".
