Former Gophers QB MarQueis Gray hopes tight end is his path to NFL

This did not suprise me what so ever... great guy just no position... maybe he can make a practice squad.

Doogie says it looks like he's going to the 49ers.

Given Kapernick's success, Gray to the 49ers makes some sense. Gray's a good athlete who could find himself on the field in many different situations (provided, of course, that he shows he has the chops to play at the professional level).

Too bad he didn't get drafted but like Lakeville Goldy said, when you get to the 7th round, you're almost better not being picked especially if you are in Gray's position. He gets to gauge who is interested in him and what position they would like him to play as opposed to being picked by someone and have them saying "this is what we have in mind."

He can't play in the NFL now if he would have been a TE or WR from day one for the gophers i would have given him a shot at playing. To late to the party my friend

I know, right? I mean, look at all the time that Antonio Gates played TE in college!

The 49ers list Gray as a RB on their official release issued today. Here is an article about that:

The first wave of 49ers free agent contracts became official Thursday with the signings of eight players.

The most noteworthy player on the list is MarQueis Gray, who was a multi-faceted offensive player at Minnesota the past three seasons.

Gray (6-foot-3, 240 pounds) caught 42 passes for 587 yards and five touchdowns as a wide receiver his sophomore season. The next year he played extensively at quarterback, completing 108 of 213 pass attempts for 1,495 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. As a senior, he rushed for 390 yards and five touchdowns. The 49ers list Gray as a running back.

Go Gophers!!

Sounds like the 49ers have a plan for him at least.

Place him back there with Kaepernick, Gore, and James, he could do something there lol

Because the 49ers don't already have enough running backs... Gore, James, Lattimore, and now Gray

I think he'll be more of an H-back type and not a traditional RB.

The 49ers use a lot of these "slash" type of players. Delanie Walker was somewhere between a FB and TE. He is probably more of a TE, but he lined up in the backfield a lot. He has moved onto Tennessee.

They use a lot of formations and they play a lot of players. There is a ton of competition for PT in San Fran, so that makes it a difficult fit, but as far as having a coach who is good at utlizing guys without a clear position, Harbaugh is the best.

Are they going to try and use him like they did Michael Robinson?

MarQueis Gray Adjusts to New Position

“I never thought I’d be a tight end or h-back,” Gray said on Saturday.

“I got a sense of it after the season when I went to the Texas vs. the Nation game and (scouts) wanted to see me as a standup type of tight end,” Gray said.

The first day at the position wasn’t a breeze for Gray, but it wasn’t a complete let-down either.

“It’s very hard,” he said, “but you’ve just got to stay in the playbook and overcome adversity.”

Route-running isn’t foreign to Gray, but in-line blocking will be the biggest hurdle to overcome.

“Blocking and terminology being up front with the big guys – that’s the biggest part of being a tight end,” he said.

“We’re all out here competing and having fun,” Gray said. “We also know we’re professionals now. This is a job. We’re out here competing for our job and you’ve got to keep that in the back of your head.

“When you get off the field, you need to stay in the playbook as much as you can.”
