Former Gopher Ryan Saunders on Wolves coaching staff

I'm starting to see why they wouldn't have your back.

Are you still talking about coaching basketball or your home life?

Wrong again.

I have been blessed to work with good people but coaches do share stories with one another.
Curious: Are you old enough to drive?
I'll give you the last word before you tell me your dad can beat mine up.
Have a great day. Continue to cheer for the Gophers! Cya

People upset that the Wolves hired Ryan Saunders are probably the same ones who thought the only reason the Gophers hired Pitino was because of his last name. How'd that turn out for you?

Must be talking about different people. Annoyed by the Ryan hire, warmed to the Pitino hire in no time!

You would have a point if Rick Pitino were the Minnesota AD.

meaning you weren't happy about it right away

Not jump out of my chair thrilled or upset. Like nearly all, was not sure his credentials and had never seen a or heard a peep from him.

Guessing not to many (except some GH liars) would say their initial reaction was 'SLAM DUNK' when they first heard the news.

I haven't been following Ryan's career, do you know his strengths/weaknesses as an assistant coach?

Yes, I've got 300+ page binders on Ryan and all all the list of potential assistance candidates they passed on so Phil could hire his son.

Sorry. Wasn't clear. Can you give one strength and one weakness for Ryan?

The "ole Country Club" strikes again.

This offseason was extremely Timberwolfsy.

All of the reasons that I didn't want Flip to coach the Gophers are being illuminated by his recent tenure with the Wolves.

Analytics might as well be Latin to Flip. Pitino gets the numbers, he gets how to use them, it's a night and day difference between the two of them when they talk about using statistics to help them coach. Pitino sounds "Spursy". Flip sounds, well, like Flip.

Flip says that he needed to hire himself as coach before the draft so that he could go out and get good assistants. He got Lowe, Mitchell and his son. . .hmmmm.

As far as Ryan Saunders, he might be a great coach. I actually have less of a problem with him being the 4th on the bench in the NBA than 3rd on the bench n college basketball (it's a better fit for a really inexperienced coach who has never recruited or really coached much in his life). He seems like a smart guy, I hope he does well.

Strength. . .he sounds at least somewhat competent when discussing analytics.

Weakness. . .well, he has never gotten a job from anyone other than his dad or someone his dad hired.

I loved the Pitino hire and am upset with the Ryan Saunders hire.

This is an awful example.

Thats why he hired his son.

But the burgeoning spectrum of analytics is just as much Ryan Saunders' forte. In addition to his work with Washington, he's developed an in-game iPad application called Gametime Concepts.

The program provides coaches on-the-fly analysis and statistical probabilities and is used by several NBA and NCAA teams.

"I wouldn't call myself an advanced stat guy, but I'd say that a strength that I have is I'm able to put numbers into how basketball minds can use them," Saunders said. "Analytical numbers, having basketball guys kind of translate that knowing what plays work, what defensive coverages work as the game goes."

But keep spewing the overused country club cliches...makes you guys sound real informed.

I don't think it really makes any difference who the Wolves' 3rd assistant is. From a Gopher bb perspective, I love the fact that we have 2 alums who are current NBA head coaches, and 2 more (Bickerstaff and R. Saunders) who seem to have a pretty decent shot (based on age and pedigree) of getting there as well.

And given that the average NBA head coach salary seems to be around $4 million/year, how about a couple of these guys chipping in on the practice facility...

Because he has had two very good drafts?

In fairness, both Mitchell and Lowe are former NBA head coaches and not bad ones. Mitchell was coach of the year one year. Ryan Saunders would be looked at more favorably considering his resume if he did not share a last name with the head coach.

Well...I happen to know that "The Mayor" is playing golf with Flip up north this weekend. Maybe that is still in the works.
