Really...
Sport is entertainment, money spent on sports aren't for the betterment of the world. Your earlier comment was stupid. So yes "Really"
Really...
I'm with Tiny on this. It's easy to point fingers at others when things aren't going your way. It's not easy to put in the hard work to make yourself better (practicing long hours in a "crappy gym").
I am not against a practice facility by any means, but cmon, let's not make excuses either.

Is it an excuse if you can't get into a gym on campus? It's a joke anyone thinks that its an excuse of the team when they have to leave campus to get additional work in. If they have to leave campus to get gym time it's an embarrassment nothing else!

Have you ever checked my bank account to see where I donate? Do you know where I volunteer? My comment of "Really" is based upon your asinine response to the fact that we pander to a game rather than award those citizens who will make a significant difference to society as a whole. If you wish to take this to the off topic thread then start a topic and we'll finish it there.
On topic: The facilities don't make a player great. The player makes him/herself great.
You brought it up...if you feel that we waste money when it can go to help others then do it. It's not valid.
Back to the point, if the players can't get gym time on campus it's a disgrace. I wouldn't expect my high school team to leave our campus to get gym time, if they want it, we will help make it happen. The fact the players are going places for gym time shows they are trying to get better. I bet the Russians have better facilities then the U!
How does our state produce the top hockey players in the country when so many of the teams have to rent ice time from other venues? We must be just getting lucky I guess.
How do so many great basketball players come out of the slums of New York, Philly and Chicago when they don't have a state of the art facility to practice in 24/7? I can't imagine how kids have become adept at tying their shoe laces when we don't have a quality facility to help them develop those advanced skills.
Yes, I'm going WAY over the top to make a point. Point is: Stop making up lame excuses for lack of player development at the U of M.
Lol those great players that come from slums go to colleges with practice facilities!
Yeah...none of the kids at the U of M came from poverty...

The Recreation and Wellness Center has four or six courts upstairs. I recall the women's team shooting around in the north gym while the south guy was typically for open gym and classes.
Why don't they just have access cards to the north gym for players only until we get this got' dammmn practice facility built.
Do you realize how many indoor gyms there are in Minneapolis? If you're a D1 player with pro basketball aspirations, you can easily find a basket to play at on campus or near. It's not that hard to work a couple hours into their schedule to train. Facilities are important, but that shouldn't impede our players' progress or be an excuse. Is it an excuse if you can't get into a gym on campus? Different era, no one had a practice facility, very few may have when Jackson rolled around, but everyone was still on an even playing field. Sports are changing, it's about dollars as much as it is the game if not more now. The UofM quite frankly took your approach during the Maturi years and fell behind, now were at the point where a practice facility will only bring us back to par, instead of giving us an advantage. Heck if we screw it up like with the football stadium if mkight not even do that. The times they are a changing whether we like it or not.How in the world did Kevin McHale, Trent Tucker, Willie Burton, Bobby Jackson, etc... ever make it to the NBA while playing at the U of M? I guess Dutcher and Haskins had no control over their development!
Are you saying that there is no place in Williams arena to watch film or schedule specific times for coaching and working with teammates? You make it sound like Augsburg College has better accommodations for goodness sake.
Please, enough with the excuses that have little to no relevance when it comes to individual improvement of a person's game.

lakesgopher is killing it in this thread.
It's pretty simple - if you don't want the Gophers to spend the money to keep up with their peers, you forfeit the right to bitch about losses, recruiting, coaching, etc., etc.
So u believe that it's ok for the U players to have to leave campus for extra practice time?
There are plenty of places right on campus. There's access to hoops for a majority of the day. You make it sound like our current team can't shoot as well as other teams because the we don't have a new facility yet. If someone is a B10 basketball player with hopes to get to the NBA (i.e. Rodney, Trevor), I don't think anyone is going to let "I can't find an open hoop" be the excuse for poor shooting and not making it to the next level.
I think we need a practice facility and I would like to see one funded. Personally I can't help fund it, as I've already paid the U $50,000. Until then I'm not going to blame this year's underachievement on the practice facilities. You're perspective is skewed lakes.
Aren't there intramural sports in there at night as well? Do you cancel all intramural sports so the players men and women always have access?

You tell me. I thought intramural sports and open gym were in the south court. If not there are other gyms that could be used for intramural on campus.
It's not that much to ask to let the team have reserved access to the north courts when Williams is unavailable.
So what about the girls Bball team? And the other sports that seemingly run into this problem? Do they also deserve this time? Doesn't it then still remain a problem?
The way you are talking I think it should be a realistic talk about cutting the program because we don't want to compete within the big ten.
