per ESPN:

Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in a deadly late-night shooting, sealing the downfall of an athlete who once had a $40 million contract and a standout career ahead of him.

Hernandez, 25, looked to his right and pursed his lips after the jury forewoman read the verdict. The first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole in the slaying of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old landscaper and semi-pro football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée.

Hernandez's mother, Terri, and his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, cried and gasped when they heard the verdict. Shayanna Jenkins wept on his mother's shoulder. Hernandez later mouthed to them: "Be strong. Be strong."

The former football pro was also found guilty on firearms and ammunition charges.

Too bad they can't execute him. Take him and that piece of dung bomber out at the same time.

This case and Lawrence Phillips' are the antithesis of everything that is good about football.

Some coaches will go through great lengths to win national championships even if it means over looking the character flaws (criminals) of thoroughbred players. :cool03:

And who was Aaron Hernandez' college football coach in Florida? Urban Meyer

It's a stretch of epic proportions to blame Urban Meyer for a murder committed by someone else and that happened years after both left Florida.

Right, and Aaron Hernandez along with a number of other players never had any issues while in Gainesville......http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/07/s...ested-at-florida-in-the-meyer-years.html?_r=0

It is kind of ironic that Florida holds the all-time 3rd place position in the Fulmer Cup. Here are the seasonal Fulmer Cup standings for Florida while Urban Meyer was there:

2006 - 6th
2007 - 3rd
2008 - 13th
2009 - 4th
2010 - 11th

It should also be noted that Brewster's last year, our Gophers ended up in 3rd place. I think Kevin Whaley singlehandedly can be thanked for that.

Beautiful straw man you've constructed. There's quite a difference between character/criminal issues of players while they were directly under Meyer's supervision at Florida, and a murder that occurred years after the last time the two probably even spoke to each other.

No one is blaming Urban Meyer for Aaron Hernandez murdering someone. He also didn't just wake up one day and become a bad dude. Go back to the original quote:

This is what Urban Meyer does. Even his former player in that article said so.

Why is Urban Meyer even being brought up? Why not Bill Belichick? He was actually coaching Hernandez when he committed the murder. Who's going to hold his feet to the fire?

He also didn't just wake up one day and become a bad dude.

How do you know?

This is what Urban Meyer does. Even his former player in that article said so.

Is this the road we really want to go down? Ge'Shun Harris is a criminal. I'm certain that other players from Jerry Kill's past have also committed crimes. So should I say that "Jerry Kill will go through [sic] great lengths to win in the Big Ten even if it means over looking [sic] the character flaws (criminals) of thoroughbred players"?

You could say that....except Kill kicked Harris off the team in March 2012.

Urban Meyer kicked lots of players off the team at Florida. What's your point?

The point was you used Ge'Shun Harris as an example of Coach Kill overlooking character flaws (criminals) so he could win the Big Ten. Use another example and you'd have a point.

Of the 121 players listed on the 2008 Gator roster, 41 have been arrested in their lives as of 2013 (New York Times). Yep - Meyer, Kill, they're all the same.

You, my friend, are a [sic], [sic] individual. :cool02:

blaming coaches is in the same realm as blaming the culture of pricks like Hernadez on rap music. How about putting some blame on the woman and man that put him on earth?

Or better yet, we could place the blame on Hernandez himself.

When 60-65% of your two deep are arrested in college or the five years afterward, that has to reflect on the coach. There are a few bad apples everywhere but 16 on your two deeps?

His brother has a master's degree and is a GA on Iowa's staff with academic honors to boot while playing at UConn so I'll stick to blaming Aaron Hernandez.

Then why are you going to such great lengths to accost Urban Meyer?

Speaking of a road you want to go down. Sure you want to go down this one?

What have I done!?!? What have I become?!?!

I cited a single unflattering statistic from a 1,150+ word New York Times expose' on Urban and his Gator football team after a poster cited Ge'Shun Harris as an example of Jerry Kill overlooking character flaws (criminals) to win football games.

I'm going to take a long look in the mirror tonight.

Wow, family members can be so different. http://www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/dj_hernandez_837976.html When I was in grad school I taught a course at a South Carolina prison. One of the inmates was from a very prominent family, his brother who was an astronaut and the father was a Hall of Fame HS coach. That one child just could not stay out of trouble despite having a supportive family...

I blame my late Uncle Gordy for all of my misgivings.

This story has almost nothing to do with football. This is a story of a man who committed murder and was convicted. By the logic of some, let's go ahead and blame whoever the USC coach was during OJ's time there or the employer of any of the other thousands of murderers in this country. I don't blame anyone except Hernandez himself. Plenty of individuals throughout history have been given a chance to produce based on their talents only to squander that opportunity due to poor decisions. I really don't get the infatuation with this particular incident.
