Former Butler HC Brad Stevens on Gophers' interim-AD Beth Goetz: "A rock star"

per Strib:

The new leader of Gophers athletics, at least for the moment, is Beth Goetz, who has remained relatively anonymous to the general public.

So just who is Goetz?

“A rock star,’’ said Brad Stevens, the Boston Celtics coach who praised Goetz’s leadership skills from their years together at Butler when he was the men’s basketball coach there.

Stevens in a telephone conversation Friday said he was especially impressed by Goetz’s demeanor during their years together at Butler.

“That temperament in that job is so important. She just has a great way about her, and she’s really, really thoughtful,” Stevens said. “Beth has clearly been a rock star for a long time. … The No. 1 thing of being a great leader, especially when times get more difficult, is authenticity. And you know what you’re getting from her every day.”

Go Gophers!!

That's a great endorsement. If Kaler has the confidence in her to select her as permanent AD, I'd be good with it.

The women coaches love her. They see her as their Maturi. Expect the women's sports and small men's sports to lobby for her like no tomorrow.

Does Kaler have what it takes to stand up to them?

What Kill thinks will matter tremendously. He is the golden boy and rightfully so. The new AD will probably be below Kill on the totem poll. Pitino has no influence or say in this matter.

What are they going to say, she sucks and I can't stand her?
They need to get someone that already has been top dog at a smaller school that has experience with football. The football, men's basketball, and hockey coaches need to be happy with this hire. Getz sounds like a perfect #2 to run the women's side of things. This is plum job.

Source? I have seen several comments with similar sentiments, but no one has given a reason. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she doesn't have the ability to be a quality Power 5 AD.

Why does it have to be an either=or situation. Some people apparently think that an AD has to "choose sides" between the revenue-producing and non-revenue producing sports.

Call me crazy, but I think it's possible for an AD to treat all the sports fairly - as long as the AD is honest with all of the programs and there is open communication. The non-rev coaches understand that the financial side of things is driven by the major rev sports - they just don't want to be ignored or treated like second-class citizens.

There has to be a happy medium between Joel Maturi (too much love for non-rev sports) and Norwood Teague (dismissive of non-rev sports).

It is a must that any AD understands that Football is king. It's the engine that moves the train. If that's not their philosophy, they need not apply.

"She (Goetz) has a great deal of empathy and understanding of what people in this department are trying to achieve, " Gophers volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "I think she knows right from wrong, and she has strong integrity and character and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes to be the right thing."
